Václav Klaus' Idiolect: A Corpus-based Analysis

This thesis explores the idiolect of Václav Klaus using the tools and methods of corpus linguistics. The main aim of the research is a comprehensive analysis of Klaus' idiolect and its potential changes over time and depending on the public offices that Klaus held, with particular emphasis on the lexical level of the idiolect, which is most telling about the meanings that are conveyed. In order to achieve the main research goal, a corpus of Václav Klaus'texts was built for research purposes, compiled from his texts publicly available on his official website. The main method of data analysis in this research is the corpus method of keyword analysis, which works on the principle of comparing the relative frequencies of units (usually word forms or lemmas) in the text or corpus under study with the relative frequency of the same units in a reference corpus, which usually serves as a standard of language usage. On the basis of this comparison with appropriate reference corpora, key units (lemmas in most of the analyses conducted) are identified in the Klaus corpus that occur statistically significantly more frequently than would be expected on the basis of their occurrence in the reference corpus. Idioms in adolescent speakers: comprehension and active usage

Diploma thesis deals with idioms in adolescent speakers, their understanding of selected idioms and possible active use. The first part of the thesis, theoretical, deals with the basic concepts of idioms and also with the concepts related to the communication and group work of adolescent speakers. The theoretical part of the text is based mainly on the study of literature. The second part of the thesis, analytical, deals with the analysis of individual and group work of selected native speakers (2nd year and 4th year of eight-year grammar school). The analysis is structured according to the formed groups and then according to the types of exercises. The analysis was based on the processing of individual and group work and the transcription of recordings made during the group work. Perceptual and pronunciation problems of Czech students of Korean at the segmental plane

The aim of this dissertation is to describe the perceptual and pronunciation problems of Czech learners of Korean at the segmental level. Mastering the sound plan of the target language both in terms of perception and production is one of the basic prerequisites for smooth communication. Therefore, from the beginning of the study, it is necessary to focus on the phonemic ear training and the formation of an articulation base for correct pronunciation in the target language. And since the mother tongue is one of the factors that influence foreign language acquisition in all areas, including phonetics, identifying pronunciation problems of students with a particular mother tongue can lead to more effective phonetics instruction. The introductory theoretical part of the thesis is divided into two chapters. The first introduces the reader to phonetics and its importance in language teaching, while the second focuses on a comparison of Korean and Czech from a phonetic-phonological perspective. The subchapters describe and compare the vocalic and consonant systems, syllable structure, and phonological processes in both languages. Finding idioms based on anomalous word-form distribution

This diploma thesis deals with the search, description, classification, and dictionary comparison of idioms based on data provided by GramatiKat application, which can identify nominal lemmas with anomalous word-form distribution. The aim of the diploma thesis is to determine whether grammatical anomalies in nouns (unusually high frequencies of one or more forms within a morphological paradigm) indicate formally anomalous multi-word lexemes (idioms) and how this relationship varies across different cases. Additionally, it explores the types of idioms that most commonly appear in individual cases of the singular. The analysis, utilizing SYN2015 a SYNv11 corpora, revealed that 28 % of analyzed lemmas are part of one or more idioms. The most common case is the accusative (88 %), while the least common is the vocative (5 %). The analysis also identified various groups of idioms with similar characteristics. For instance, verbal idioms were frequently observed in the dative, contact idioms predominated in the vocative, and grammatical idioms were prevalent in the locative.
Adaptation of selected literary texts for A2 level students

The thesis will focus on the adaptation of texts to the A2 level for students learning Czech as a foreign or second language. The adaptation will concern artistic texts drawn from modern Czech literature. In the theoretical part of the thesis, we will focus on the theory of simplifying artistic texts and the use of adapted texts in the teaching of a foreign (second) language as part of language lessons and reading comprehension practice. We will also assess the challenges of using adapted texts, define the concept of reading skills we will define the concept of reading competence and methods for its development. The theoretical section will include a chapter addressing the significance of literature in the foreign languages' lessons. The practical part of the thesis will contain the selection of texts from modern Czech literature, their adaptation to the A2 level (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), and the development of worksheets for students with methodological instructions for teachers. Cartoon films as a didactic tool for teaching Czech to pupils with a different mother tongue

This master's thesis deals with cartoon films as a didactic tool for teaching the Czech language as the second language, having an additional potential to develop not only learners' language competences but also their knowledge of the basic facts and culture of the Czech Republic. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate this potential using the sample of various different Czech cartoon films episodes and to suggest the possibilities of their use in teaching to young learners of primary school age with a different mother tongue, especially those with the czech language skills not exceeding levels A1/A2. The theory in the first part presents the update knowledge concerning the implementation of autenthic materials into foreign language learning. It provides the general characteristics of language levels A1 and A2, with regards to the target workgroup, and refers to primary school age cognitive specifics. In the end of this part, the cartoon films are defined as the distinctive format of the short television fairy-tale for children. Animal Idioms in Czech and Chinese phraseology

Language is the most important apparatus for human communication. Each language has its own specifics, it is a reflection of a given culture. Language is always changing because people's knowledge and thinking is always evolving. Phrases are typical units of language and studying them will help to understand both languages (here Czech and Chinese) and consequently understand the cultural differences between the two countries (Czech Republic and China). This thesis deals with the most frequent animal names in Czech and Chinese phraseology. The aim of the thesis is to describe not only the structure and types of phrases in both languages, but especially the semantics and symbolism of the most frequently occurring animal names, to compare identical names, to explain any differences in their distribution and to capture their absence in each of the two languages. Czech textbooks for the Czech School without Borders London

The diploma thesis analyses the textbooks of Czech language for 6th and 7th grade of elemantary school, which were created by Czech School Without Borders in London. Due to the breadth of the topic a wide range of sub-topics is presented in the work: the characteristics of education and pupils of Czech school, its connection to Czech educational system (primarily in the context of the directive on approval clause), textbook theory and last, but not least, communicative concept of language education. With the help of pre-estabilished methods (questionnaire data collection, measurement of the didactic equipment of textbooks, assessment of learning tasks and measurement of the variability index, assessment and analysis of visual materiál) the Czech language textbooks are analysed. Based on the analysis of the textbooks and the report to the granting of the approval clause the thesis articulates the proposals for the modifications of the textbooks. The Czech Crossword Dictionaries

The aim of this master's thesis is to investigate the concept of crossword dictionaries. The thesis provides a list of Czech crossword dictionaries and delves into their historical background. The theoretical section discusses the structure of these dictionaries and explores their position within the lexicographical typology. The practical portion focuses on analyzing the entries found in selected crossword dictionaries (Křížovkářský slovník by Černovský and Vinduška; Křížovkářům do kapsy by Kramář a Jelínek), comparing them with that of two monolingual dictionaries: the Příruční slovník jazyka českého (Handbook of the Czech Language) and the Akademický slovník současné češtiny (Academic Dictionary of Contemporary Czech). The Czech Language of the Weekly Našinec in 1988

This thesis aims to characterize selected features of the Czech language used in the Czech-American weekly Našinec. The material basis consists of scans of ten issues from 1988. The opening chapters (1) focus on Czech emigration to the USA, specifically on the development of the Texas community and Texas Czech language, and are followed by a description of Czech-American press and its language in the second half of the twentieth century. The next part (2) describes the Našinec and its language in the linguistic research to date and then (3) details are given about the sample chosen for further analysis and criteria of selection of features chosen for the analysis (4). The main part (5-7) of the present BA thesis includes quantitative research into three phenomena which are well documented in the sample and at the same time seem to differ from the situation in the contemporary Czech language. These phenomena are: competition of the prepositions k/ke/ku, the infinitive ending and forms of the third person singular present tense of the verb být "to be". The state of affairs detected in Našinec was compared to the period linguistic manuals, studies and relevant language corpora.
