Melnik during the Thirty Years' War

The objective of this work has been to provide a comprehensive micro-analytical perspective on a small royal town in centra} Bohemia which has been influenced by its position in the landscape at the convergence of two of the most important rivers in the Czech Republic- the Vltava and Elbe rivers. The focus is on the years between 1618 and 1648, with considerable attention devoted to the developmental aspects of the pre-war and post-war periods. This has been made possible by the exceptional degree of preservation of the town archives, which in contrast to the archives of other Czech towns have not been affected by wide-spread document destruction or shredding. Consequently, the town has preserved for modem times a remarkable material legacy, literally offering the insatiated scholar an opportunity for detailed exploration. The analysis of these materials, primarily divided into books and official documents, has been the focus of attention right from the first chapter, supplemented by alternative sources that are housed in other locations in the Czech Republic. Prague Municipal Clerks 1900-1950

Veronika Knotková, Prague Municipal Clerks 1900-1950 Abstract This work, based mainly on primary resources, deals with the issues of bureaucracy, i.e. with the elite group of officials/clerks of the legal category of the Prague Municipal Office in the first half of the 20th century. During this relatively long period, Prague reached a position of modern capital of a new state, Czechoslovakia, and one of Central European metropolises. The core of the thesis lays in explaining principles of functioning of the municipal bureaucracy, the development of its position, the course of its career and the factors that influenced them. Attention is paid to the mutual relations within this group and both to their individual and group strategies, with regard to other municipal officials of other than juristic previous university education within the Prague municipal office as well as to the relations of officials and representatives of municipal administration. It shows how the disciplinary rules were applied. Adequate attention is paid to the relationship/interventions of state administration into the self-government sphere.

From a Burgher House through the Imperial Court to Loket Castle The Careers of Kaspar and Mates Schlicks in Bohemia, Empire and Saxony (1390-1487) The presented thesis is devoted to the oldest history of the Schlick family. The rise of an originally burgher-class family was based on the court and chancellery career of Kaspar Schlick († 1449); the latter bolstered his successes in the services of Sigismund of Luxembourg and Albrecht and Fridrich Habsburgs by an array of false documents that significantly contributed to the change of his social and economic status (his false promotion to the estate of a count and gaining a fortune). In the second half of the 15th century, after Kaspar's death, his brother Mates and his sons struggled for the preservation of acquired status and health. The following topics were investigated: (1) The utilization of court services and careers for burghers' getting into aristocratic circles, as exemplified by the person of Kaspar Schlick († 1449); (2) The search of strategies the Schlicks - Mates Schlick in particular († 1487) - took to limit themselves from the aristocratic environment, part of which they became. The Lower Nobility in Towns and Market-Towns in the 17th and 18th Century

Czech historiography pays an important degree of attention to the nobility in towns, especially in connection with palaces in land metropolises. We find noblemen in various towns - big towns and market-towns. A nobleman did not just own a seat there, many nobleman allied different passages of their lives with a town surrounding. Some places turned into a home for numerous groups of higher-state members. This study examines the seven towns and market-towns in Western and Central Bohemia. It is possible to rank the most of the nobleman there as the lower nobility, from the titular and property point of view. This study addresses the important issues: seated nobleman as town-community member and residences of such a nobleman. The nobleman had to submit to certain norms and authorities. There were the municipal law documents, land law documents and privileges amongst. Will of offices, land lords and town councils varied in its extent. Members of the town councils represented only a part of municipal community. A nobleman was connected with them and other town inhabitans with different relations. Nobleman's relationship to public places varied. The character of town residences varies with country seats. Social and Political Growth of the Kostka of Postupice in the second half of 15th century

This bachelor thesis deals with a noble family of the Kostka of Postupice and outlines its history during 15th century highlighting particular members of the noble family. Since Vilém I. Kostka of Postupice was given an entry by the ceasar Sigmund Luxembourg into an estate of Litomyšl Bishopric, we can follow the growth of the noble family. One of the most striking personalities of the period was Zdeněk III. Kostka of Postupice, who was holding a lot of diplomatic dealings on behalf of the George of Poděbrady. He also became the highest coin-master of the Bohemian kingdom, he was in Royal Council session and participated in Royal Court trials. All of those activities were a reason why he was ennobled. Thanks to Zdeněk III. Kostka of Postupice the Kostka noble family became one of the wealthiest and most powerful Calixtin families in the Bohemian kingrom.

Rapprochement from below? German-French town twinning from 1950 to 2000

The dissertation Rapprochement from below? German-French town twinning from 1950 to 2000 is a historiographic study that focuses on town twinning as a specific aspect of German-French co-operation in the second half of the 20th century. The topic is analysed in a wider German-French context and based on statistical data as well as archive sources. The main objective of the study is to evaluate the impact of high-level bilateral relations on German-French town twinning, identify the motivation of its supporters and compare German-French town twinning in the West-German and East-German federal states. Additionally, the localisation of town twins was studied for the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany.

An Isolated Island : West Berlin under Willy Brandt (1961-1966). The City behind the Berlin Wall

This thesis "An Isolated Island: West Berlin under Willy Brandt (1961- 1966). The city behind the Berlin Wall" concentrates on West Berlin between 1961 and 1966 and on the political initiatives of Willy Brandt as a Governing Mayor of the city. The city, which became immediately after World War II a central point of Cold War tensions between the East and the West, remained after the first Berlin Crisis the last gap in the Iron Curtain, where the two worlds - the East and the West - met face to face. After the construction of the Berlin wall the city experienced a shock, which it overcame very fast, and benefited from the subsequent changes thanks to extraordinary work of the Mayor Willy Brandt. His new political style and new communicative approach to politics transformed the situation in the city and led to rapid modernization and development. He was able to secure moral, political and above all financial support for the city for a long time period, which enabled to turn the city into a "showcase of democracy in the middle of the communist sea". Such a success in West Berlin elevated Willy Brandt into the highest political posts in Federal Republic of Germany.

To the communication of the towns in the period before the Battle of the White Mount (The correspondence among New Town of Prague and some king's towns in the central part of Polabí)

The submitted thesis aims to scan the written communication among the city councils of royal towns in the period before the Battle of the White Mount, particularly the correspondence among the New Town of Prague and Royal Towns in the Central Part of Polabí, explicitly Český Brod, Kolín, Kouřim, Kutná Hora and Nymburk. The research was based mainly on 20 town registers of the period and on the extant scripts which enabled me to set up both the communication process and particular agents. Thus we were offered the insight into the townhall, its offices, circumstances of the origin of missivs, we observed individual characters and institutions involved in the negotiation procedures. We came across the issue of messenger service mediating the delivery and last but not least we were concerned about receiving correspondence, its interpretation at the time and the content of discussed matters. Another issue we dealt with was the terminology ie. definition of written communication, diplomacy terminology, especially register issue defined as supplemental office book in publishers'offices containing the office scripts. Power and glory of the house of the Ronower. The career of Ronower in the Luxembourg era

Smrt Zikmunda Lucemburského symbolicky uzavřela jednu etapu českých dějin. Husitská revoluce přinesla do života společnosti mnohé změny a byla odrazovým můstkem ke stavovskému státu. Téměř dvě a půl století jsme sledovali osudy rodu erbu ostrve, Ronovců, kteří se stejně jako ostatní šlechtické rody snažili vybojovat své místo na slunci. Z původních severočeských sídel se Ronovci rozšířili skoro do všech regionů Čech a Moravy, když ne přímo získáním držav, tak alespoň sňatkovou politikou.K tomu je nutno připočítat držbu lén, nejčastěji v Horní Lužici nebo v Kladsku. Snad žádný český ani moravský rod se nemohl vykázat takovou migrací. Ne všechny ronovské odnože Lucemburky přežily. Již v roce 1351 vymřeli po meči Žlebští z Lichtenburka, v roce 1410 Pyknové z Lichtenburka. Odnož Škopků z Dubé vyhasla přibližně ve stejnou dobu jako lucemburská dynastie a mnoho času už nezbývalo ani pánům z Pirkštejna. Slavný Hynek Ptáček z Pirkštejna zemřel bez mužských dědiců v roce 1444. Ostatní větve prokázaly větší životaschopnost, Krušinové a Bítovští z Lichtenburka žili ještě v 2.polovině 16.století, Berkové z Dubé a páni z Lipé dokonce ještě o půl století déle.
