Neo-Ottomanism in Turkish Foreign Policy and Changes during the Erdogan Era
Hurych, Vladimír ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Aslan, Emil (referee)
Neo-Ottomanism in Turkish Foreign Policy and Changes during the Erdoğan era Author: Vladimír Hurych Abstract In November 2002, the new emerging Justice and Development Party (AKP) experienced a landmark electoral victory that significantly rewrote the prevailing domestic and foreign policy identity. The Islam-based AKP and its leaders Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Abdullah Gül and Ahmet Davutoğlu initiated a massive transformation of the Turkish society imposing economic market-oriented reforms and emphasizing the role of democratic institutions and the potential EU membership. AKP establishment also adopted a new foreign policy identity - the neo-Ottomanism. The concept has a background in 1990's strategy of former President Turgut Özal who emphasized the historical, cultural and religious heritage of the Ottoman Empire. Based on domestic changing identity, AKP's neo-Ottomanism served as an ideological tool how to transform its foreign policy identity with using the Islamic narrative and soft power tools. The thesis analyses how the new establishment of 2000's redefined the role of Turkey regarding its geopolitical position in the Middle East. Turkey has been emphasizing its strategic role as a regional power on the crossroads of many cultures and geopolitical interests. The question is how and whether the AKP...
Population distribution and interregional migration in Kazakhstan
Tolesh, Fariza ; Čermák, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
Population distribution and interregional migration in Kazakhstan Abstract: As a consequence of considerable regional disparities in socio-economic development the incidence of migration varies substantially between sections of the Kazakhstani population, between parts of the national territory and over time. In this diploma thesis we attempt to find out the recent evidence concerning variations in mobility within Kazakhstan and the way these variations have an effect on population distribution. The aim is to try to outline the major trends of migration between regions and determine main push and pull factors of the interregional migration, especially the case of rural to urban movements. Among the key features identified are the changing importance of the various spatial patterns of population localization and wide differential in migration propensities and patterns between people according to age and gender, position in the family, life cycle, occupation and education. Keywords: interregional migration, regional disparities, territorial distribution
In silico screening of SIRT6 inhibitors
Kučera, Tomáš ; Doležal, Martin (advisor) ; Holas, Ondřej (referee)
Title: In silico screening of SIRT6 inhibitors Author: Tomáš Kučera Department: Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Drug Control Supervisor: prof. PharmDr. Martin Doležal, Ph.D. Specialized supervisor: Maija Lahtela-Kakkonen, Ph.D. Abstract: SIRT6 is called NAD-dependent protein deacetylase sirtuin-6 and it is a member of sirtuin protein family. It modulates acetylation of histone H3 (clinically important Lys9 and Lys56). The SIRT6 enzyme is an interesting drug target because of its role in DNA replication, glycolysis and inflammation - that is why the design of SIRT6 inhibitors is relevant in context of diabetes mellitus, arthritis and cancer. The aim of the work was to identify small molecules to inhibit deacetylase activity of SIRT6 using methods of computational chemistry and molecular modeling. We tried to find new lead structures with possibility to be optimized in next phases of the drug discovery process. The 9 known inhibitors and crystal structure of SIRT6 (PDB code 3K35) were used as input data during the modeling. Pharmacophoric and chemical similarity searches were selected from the group of ligand-based methods and molecular dock- ing from the group of structure-based methods. The pharmacophore was defined after structural alignment of four known ligands and tested on set of...
Separatist conflict: comparative study of Sri Lanka and Aceh, Indonesia
Bartošová, Kateřina ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
The aim of the master thesis is to determine factors that contribute to peace settlement of separatist conflicts. It compares two separatist conflicts with different forms of termination. The Indonesian government signed a peace agreement with separatists in province of Aceh and offered them greater autonomy, whereas the government of Sri Lanka decided on military suppression of Tamil separatists. The analysis of the conflicts is based on six factors that are built on the study of Barbara Walter about the concept of reputation building. According to the concept, governments are less likely to go for peace settlement when facing more imperilling separatist groups, seeing that governments have to invest in reputation building. The comparative case study is based on following factors: potential future separatists, value of land currently under dispute, proportion of total population and territory, balance of power between separatists and government, political system with focus on democracy, degree of centralization/ federalism. The evidence seems to be strong that the theory of reputation building does not apply to selected cases because the peace settlement was achieved in Indonesia which has far more potential separatist groups than Sri Lanka. In conclusion, the thesis identifies following factors...
Changing view on future population development of the Republic of Kazakhstan according to the United Nations World Population Prospects since the 1992 till the 2008 revision
Kerembayev, Anuar ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Burcin, Boris (referee)
Changing view on future population development of the Republic of Kazakhstan according to the United Nations World Population Prospects since the 1992 till the 2008 revision Abstract The objective of this study is to analyze changing view on future population development and to assess the reliability of the forecast results produced for Kazakhstan by the United Nations World Population Prospects since the 1992 revision with the respect to population development components: fertility, mortality, migration and by principal results: total population, age and sex structure and by some other demographic indicators. In the first part, the United Nations forecasting methodology and its applicability to the Kazakhstan population development, basic conceptual framework and its use are being explored. Analysis of the main forecast results is in the second part; nevertheless the fact that some findings based on these results support the general view on the population development by the United Nations World Population Prospects, some other findings are impugned. Furthermore, the impact of transition period (1990-2000) to the development of population by components and its influence to the age and sex composition has been proved. In this thesis the connection between some scientific disciplines, economics and...
Comparison of approaches to the radical Islam and the integration of Muslims in selected EU member states
Raffaj, Ivan ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Knutelská, Viera (referee)
The thesis offers a comparison of integration of Muslims and approaches toward radical Islam in three countries: Germany, France, and Sweden. These three countries used to represent three main integration types. The thesis argue that these three types do not longer exist and tries to verify convergence hypothesis. This is done by the analysis of particular selected aspects of integration of Muslims and counter-radicalization and counter-terrorism measures related to radical Islam in every examined country. The thesis further evaluates the effectiveness of integration and counter-radicalization approaches in selected countries and indicates which country appears to be the most effective based on selected criteria. Based on the analysis of individual countries, the thesis assumes which integration and counter-radicalization approaches or their combination toward Muslims might be the most effective.
Relevance of norms in cyberspace
Crha, Miroslav ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
In my bachelor thesis I consider security in cyberspace and attempt to establish, whether theoretical approaches to the technological domain of nuclear weapons can merit the analysis of cyberspace. More specifically, I focus on the constructivist perspective and the theoretical framework of norm evolution that allows me to analyze the behavior of states based on their shared expectations and identity in international community. Norms, which form a standard of appropriate behavior, always evolve and thus I deal with their life-cycle. Further I inquire into the application of this theoretical framework in nuclear weapons and into two concepts that expand upon it: nuclear taboo and nuclear deviation. I present the relationship between these two concepts and the dominant approach of deterrence, their pros and cons, and their differences. I demonstrate the contribution of these concepts by applying them to historical cases of (non-)use of nuclear weapons. The part of my thesis devoted to cyberspace begins with a discussion of terminology and of the aspects that differentiate cyberspace from other domains. I follow this up by a study of previous practice of cyber attacks and by the analysis of norm emergence in three areas: arms control, (non-)use of cyber weapons, and normative deterrence. My method...
Projection of Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia in the Czech Republic.
Dubová, Petra ; Burcin, Boris (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
The Czech Republic, as well as other developed countries begin to be penalized by aging of population. Increasing the proportion of older segments of the population is increasingly the subject of various technical reports from the economic field. These reports highlight the disadvantages of this change in age structure. Medical studies indicate dementia as a test of health and social connectivity system and as a threat, because with the increase of elderly population is expected the increase of the number of people with dementia. Estimate of this work confirms this hypothesis. The attention to this issue is very small in the Czech Republic. In the Czech Republic there lacks professional assessment based on local conditions, which could be followed by research comparable with foreign studies. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
