Czech pupils and citizenship: attitudes and participation
Ševců, Martina ; Soukup, Petr (advisor) ; Remr, Jiří (referee)
EVC , Martina. Ob anské postoje a participace ák v eské republice. Praha, 2011. 120 s. Diplomová práce (Mgr.) Univerzita Karlova, Fakulta sociálních v d, Institut sociologických studií. Katedra sociologie. Vedoucí diplomové práce PhDr. Ing. Petr Soukup. Abstract This thesis focuses on civic participation of Czech pupils in the realm of civil society. The main task is to find out which factors influence civic attitudes and engagement of youth in current society. There has been an increased interest in concept of civil society since the fall of Communist regimes in Central and Eastern Europe with respect to political, economic and social changes. These changes resulted in a need to rethink the content of civic and citizenship education. Firstly the author describes civil society as a context for civic participation with special emphasis on Czech civil society and then she deals with the theory of political socialization, which helps her to identify the key determinants of civic engagement. Family, school, peer groups and media are seen as the main agents of this socialization. Using data from the International Civic and Citizenship study the author concludes that context of schools and classrooms and motivation are the most important direct factors in civic engagement.
Analysis of biographical narratives using computer-assisted text analysis
Čepelák, Václav ; Hájek, Martin (advisor) ; Soukup, Petr (referee)
Besides the social survey data, texts have been an important source of sociological data since the beginning of the development of sociological methodology. Text analysis methods contain two main branches of development: Bernard Berelson's content analysis and Hans-Georg Gadamer's hermeneutic analysis. Both these methodological branches have been influenced by the development of information technologies in the last twenty years. The thesis presented here deals with one of the methods of computer text analysis (CATA), which stands on the border between these two methodological streams, a method of analyzing words' collocations in texts. The thesis presents the method in the context of other methods of text analysis, and mentions sources of inspiration for further development of these methods - corpus linguistics and text mining. The second part discusses the different steps of words' collocation analysis: building a text corpus, dictionary compilation, calculation of data matrix and visualisation of words' distances using multidimensional scaling (MDS). The method is also applied to a specific data, two text corpora compiled from transcripts of biographical interviews with actors of Czechoslovak normalization - with dissidents and Communist functionaries. Quality of the models is assessed, depending...
Analysis of Missing Data: Comparing Performance of Traditional Methods across Mechanisms
Petrúšek, Ivan ; Soukup, Petr (advisor) ; Hendl, Jan (referee)
The objective of this thesis is to evaluate different methods of dealing with missing values in data analysis. The thesis is divided into three major chapters. The first chapter summarizes the theoretical literature on missing data and focuses on missing data mechanisms in particular. The second chapter introduces traditional methods for addressing missing data in sociological research. The third chapter assesses the performance of these methods by analyzing simulated data sets for two variables (income, IQ). For practical analysis (chapter 3), we simulated missing data according to three different mechanisms (MCAR, MAR, NMAR) and varied the proportion of missing values under these mechanisms (10%, 20%, 30%). Then, we applied each of the following four methods of addressing missing values: complete-case analysis, arithmetic mean imputation, regression imputation, and stochastic regression imputation. In order to evaluate the performance of each of these methods we performed correlation and regression analyses for each experimental condition. The results of these simulations are largely in agreement with existing theoretical literature on the subject of missing data. In the case of NMAR, all solution methods provided biased parameter estimates. In the case of MCAR, only complete-case analysis and...
Does ISS FSV UK prepare the Students for Actual Needs at the Labor Market?
Blahovec, Václav ; Remr, Jiří (advisor) ; Soukup, Petr (referee)
The rigorous work "Does ISS educate their students in accordance with the needs of the labor market?" deals with the relationship between tertiary education of graduates and their labor market outcomes. In the theoretical part the thesis deals with the importance of education in relation to the employability of graduates. The methodological part approaches this relationship on a case study of the Institute of Sociological Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University. Evaluation as s research method is chosen to solve the diploma thesis. The analytical part gradually reveals the conceptual model of the evaluated program, stakeholders and their interests. The aim of the analytical part is to answer the evaluation questions about the level of work performance of graduate employability skills. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Facebook: online communication in society
Vacatová, Linda ; Osuský, Michal (advisor) ; Soukup, Petr (referee)
Dissertation deals with relatively new phenomenon of social networking sites, particularly Facebook, and his potential in terms of information diffusion. Virtual community Facebook has become very popular in the last few years and number of its users is still increasing, especially among young people. It has become a common part of their social existence and therefore deserves attention from social scientists. The objectives of the research, which is this paper based on, are to find out differences between social communication online and offline and also to determine the role which offline communication plays in terms of information diffusion. Main difference appeared to be especially much lower transaction costs of the online communication, and also the fact, that Facebook users tend to communicate indirectly, rather than directly, using tools for self presentation and information search. Another goal of this study was to identify characteristics of the main information nodes in the online social network and their possible typology. Research outcomes lead to the hypothesis, that in case of correct identification of the main nodes with sufficient social capital, suitable position in the network and active usage of these attributes, one can find an information channel, through which can be information...
Meat or Salad? Effect of Dynamic Norms on Preference for Meatless Meals
Weikertová, Štěpánka ; Urban, Jan (advisor) ; Soukup, Petr (referee)
The food choices we make every day have a great impact on our environment. Particularly meat consumption significantly contributes to global climate change. Although the current situation calls for a change towards more sustainable diet, meat consumption is still rising. Previous research show that dynamic social norms, i.e. information about ongoing collective behavioral change, can promote pro- environmental behavior, even in the context of meat consumption. Through two pre- registered online experimental studies conducted on a sample of university students (Study 1, N = 227) and on a sample of adult Czech population (Study 2, N = 462), this thesis examines whether dynamic norm message regarding the changing trends in meat consumption can influence intentions to consume less meat. We did not find any direct or total effect of dynamic norms on the preference for meatless meals. Mediation analysis only revealed rather weak indirect effect of dynamic norms on the preference for meatless meals mediated by perceived dynamic norms. In Study 2, we further examined whether the effect of dynamic norm message is conditioned by strength of the dynamic norms (effect of stronger vs weaker dynamic norm) and whether the provision of dynamic norm information triggers self-defense mechanisms which rationalize...
An Examination of Household Energy Conservation Behavior in the Framework of Theory of Planned Behavior and Norm Activation Model: Prague Case
Boyaci, Çagatay ; Soukup, Petr (advisor) ; Remr, Jiří (referee)
This M.A. thesis aims at investigating the socio-psychological motivations and demographic factors related to how individuals perform energy conservation behavior in the household domain. For this reason, two approaches to this sociological issue, the Theory of Planned Behavior and Norm Activation Model, were comprehensively examined to be adequately combined into one experimental model that would determine and help to explain the motivations on the energy conservation behaviors in households. In total, 303 respondents were surveyed who have a residency in Prague by sharing an online-based questionnaire in various Facebook groups between April 28, 2021, and July 3, 2021. In order to test the created hypotheses according to the developed model of the research study, structural equation modeling and ANOVA analysis were employed. As a result, the findings show that combining the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Norm Activation Model gives promising results in explaining the socio-psychological motivations of household energy conservation behaviors. The author of the thesis concludes that social norms have a positive influence on personal norms, and further the personal norms have a positive impact on intentions, and therefore the intentions directly impact the household energy conservation behavior....
