"The Image of New Zealand in Czech Press".

The target of the diploma thesis "The Image of New Zealand in Czech Press" is to describe the ways of representation of New Zealand in Czech daily newspaper, namely MF Dnes, Lidové noviny, Hospodá ské noviny and Právo, in 2009. All the 490 articles dealing with the topic of New Zealand have been systematically examined by both quantitative and qualitative content analysis research methods. The quantitative content analysis deals with how the topic is represented among the newspaper mentioned above, measures the time line of its representation during the year and the space dedicated. However, the main concern is to recognize the main topics connected with New Zealand in the articles. The types of news (hard news and soft news) as well as the sources of news are discussed, too. The other subject of this thesis follows the actors and countries related to New Zealand. Next part concentrates on the linguistic analysis and interpretation of statements about this country and their possible positive or negative connotations. The main instrument used for the linguistic analysis has been an interpretation of evaluative expressions, metaphores, metonymias, irony, comparisons and other figures. The Access of Economical Analysts to the Czech News Agency and daily Press

The thesis, The Access of Economic Analysts to the Czech News Agency (CTK) and daily Press, researches the paths that analysts who provide economic news commentary utilize to access the CTK news and daily press. The thesis focuses on the impact on editors' daily routines of utilizing such sources. Further, the thesis focuses on the hierarchy of analysts' access to the news and delineates the relationship between the journalist and his sources. In the theoretical portion of the thesis, the author defines basic approaches to the study of news coverage, information sources in media contents, and organizational routines. The author presents Leon V. Sigal's three basic types of communication channels and draws on Paul Manning's source theory. In the ensuing chapters, the author discusses the rules of source selection and the relationship shifts between journalists and their sources. Further, he elucidates Jürgen Hagerman's concept of "public sphere," Antonio Gramsci's Theory of the Hegemonic Media, and Noam Chomsky's and Edward S. Herman's propaganda model. This study presents research of role of title photographs in selected czech and foreign daylies. Theoretical part introduces visual culture concepts and role of photographic images in journalism, specificity of photojournalism, photographic genres and title photographs. Next part is dedicated to concept of new values, going from original Galtung / Ruge's taxonomy to contemporary revisited version of Harcup / O'Neill's. The last theoretical chapter introduces concept of gatekeeping and picture editor as visual gatekeeper. The practical part of this study is examining title photographs of 8 czech as well as foreign journals in 4 week long period. I am using method of content analysis, based on paper The content analysis of visual images and Gillian Rose's book Visual analysis. In my study I had applied news values to photographic materials. I chose combination of original Galtung / Ruge's concept together with Harcup / O'Neills contemporary revision, putting attention to entertaining aspects of media contents. Slovenian media system in Hallin and Manicini's model

The Master thesis Slovenian media system in comparison with Hallin's and Mancini's models tries to analyze the media system in Slovenia in order to conclude whether it can be classified into one of the models defined in the book Comparing media systems: three models of media and politics. The theoretical part deals with analysis of three models (polarized pluralist, democratic corporatist, liberal) and their main features. The second section then analyzes the various segments of the Slovenian media (print media, radio, television) and other aspects essential for comparative analysis, such as professionalism, regulation, media ownership and political parallelism. The paper seeks a critical evaluation of all these aspects and their inclusion in the broader context of media and all- society environment. Emphasis has been placed on the characteristics and trends typical of the Slovenian media system, in particular the consequences associated with "wild privatization" of the media and the subsequent interconnection of the world media and politics. Comparative part is based on the effort to determine whether these characteristics Slovenian media system fully belong to any of the presented models, or to what extent can similarities be regarded as significant.
Programme Diversity in Czech Televisions between 1998 and 2006

The present thesis entitled "Programme Diversity of Czech Nationwide Television Channels in the Years 1998 - 2006" focuses on the normative requirement of the society regarding the diversity of mass media, and the approach of mass media thereto: we distinguish between media diversity introduced in the market media model and the diversity presented as part of the public sphere media model. Furthermore, this thesis attempts to search for and determine the requirements regarding media diversity as laid down in the applicable legislation of the Czech Republic or the European Union. The research part of the thesis deals with one of the many levels of diversity in the mass media environment, particularly the diversity of television programme types, i.e. television genres accepted by the interest groups: academics, broadcasters or audiences etc. The present analysis includes nationwide TV stations providing analogue broadcasting via terrestrial transmitters in the years 1998 to 2006, focusing on majority audience - Czech TV1, Prima TV and TV Nova. This thesis deals with one of the fresh trend in media production which caught attention of both scholars and laic public. It concerns phenomenon of hyper local media. Theoretical base of this work lies in appropriation of "locality"as a distinctive attribute in terms of globalization processes. It operates with such terms as spatio- temporal changes, localization, globalization, human and place, authority and social integrity trying to contextualize these terms with media studies. Further it attempts to enlighten what are hyper local media, where can we find its roots in the field of journalism, how do they work and which advantages and disadvantages they have. Research part of the thesis studies particular Czech hyper local project of PPF Investment Company combining case study and quantitative content analysis. Main intention is to find out whether the concept of hyper local journalism is sustainable in Czech media landscape (and under which conditions) and whether it has got working business model. Meaning and development of traffic information and its specifies

Diploma thesis "Meaning and development of traffic information and its specifics " deals with function of media, interactivity, news genres and traffic information as a necessary part of nowadays society. It also looks at the media and their meaning in the process of distributing traffic information. The diploma thesis also charts the behaviour of subjects, that are professionally dealing with traffic information. It focuses on news systems and individual broadcasting, that are distributing information about traffic. It also evaluates process of distributing traffic information as a welfare service. The thesis prove that such information are helpful to the public. Timely inteligence and realistic information may help not just the individual drivers, but also to the society as the whole, to the environment and the economy of companies as well. The diploma thesis denotes the beginning of first local system, that collects, processes, distributes and keeps traffic news - Integrated system of traffic information, these information are available for everybody, who applies for them, service is free of charge. Mainly media use this system. I also try to bring closer some technical inovations in traffic broadcasting, that made milestones in this relatively new discipline of mass communication.

Diploma thesis "A Comparative Analysis of Foreign News in the Main News Sessions of TV Stations ČT1, TV Nova and Prima TV in 2010" studies the way of producing foreign news by Czech TV stations in the year 2010. Also, it focuses on the question which countries were mentioned. The introductory part discusses the Czech and foreign literature and offers the overview of TV news production, international flow of communication and factors which influences the production of foreign news. It also introduces the main news sessions Události, Televizní noviny and Zprávy TV Prima. The analysis of foreign news service is divided into two parts, first inquires into differences in used types of reports, their representation in the main news sessions, the topical structure and other characteristics connected with the production of news. Then, the second part concentrates on the states which were mentioned in the foreign news and focuses on the impacts influencing the production of foreign news by the Czech TV stations. For both parts of the analysis methods of quantitative research were used. Crime in Czech media: Image of crime in Mladá fronta Dnes and Právo newpapers

Diploma thesis "Crime in Czech media: Image of crime in Mladá fronta Dnes and Právo newspapers" tries to map way and development of crime presentation in print media in the years of 1996 and 2006, using a content analysis. In the initial, theoretical part, there are the basic hypothesis explained, a description of crime from the sociological perspective and a description of crime history in former Czechoslovakia and in the Czech Republic from 80's of the 20th century until the present time. Further, there is an explanation of relevant chapters from media studies. The pracical part consists of a description of the research method and the portrayal of the research process. It continues with the content analysis itself and the evaluation of collected data. The data are presented in percentage rates and displayed in charts. Acquired rates have been compared with each other and have been searched for further relations amongst them. In the conclusion there is an overall summary of the research findings and their evaluation concerning the basic hypothesis.
Analysis of the impact of the conversion of printed newspapers to online versions of information on extremist groups

A cultural approach was selected which highlights the way in which the final form of a report and its interpretation is subject to cultural factors. The work draws on the Three Party Model of Communication Situations devised by Winfried Schulz, which models the mutual relationship between the three protagonists of an event - the main figures (representatives of extremist movements), journalists (mass media - Internet sites), and the audience (readership, recipients). Investigation of the possible interest of these three parties in information on extremism is considered on the basis of theories of critics of contemporary media.
