The Interpretation Process betwen Czech and Portuguese Language: an Approach Towards Selected Linguistic Problems

The present thesis, The Interpretation Process between Czech and Portuguese Language: an Approach Towards Selected Linguistic Problems, analyses the two languages belonging to different language families from the interpreter's point of view. The Introduction gives rea- sons for choosing the topic and outlines the general structure of the thesis. Chapter 1 (Lan- guages and Interpreting) delineates theoretical issues pertinent to language typology accord- ing to Skalička, comparing the structures of Czech and Portuguese, and outlines a basic intro- duction to interpreting. The principal subject is defined as selected linguistic problems that intepreters have to deal with when working with Czech and Portuguese. Chapter 2 (Transla- tion Procedures) focuses on methods and procedures of translation, in particular those pro- posed by Vinay and Darbelnet. Chapter 3 (Morphology and Syntax) gives a contrastive analy- sis with sample translations of substantives, adjectives, pronouns and articles in both lan- guages. The last chapter (lexicology) describes some phenomena related to lexical questions (interferences, synonymy and phraseology). The thesis is concluded by stressing the role of context in interpreting, leading eventually to some limitations for the analysis. Key words: Czech, Portuguese, Typology...

Sign Language Translation in State Administration in Germany: Barrier Free Web Accessibility

The aim of this thesis is to describe Web accessibility in state administration in the Federal Republic of Germany in relation to the socio-demographic group of deaf sign language users who did not have the opportunity to gain proper knowledge of a written form of the German language. The demand of the Deaf to information in an accessible form as based on legal documents is presented in relation to the theory of translation. How translating from written texts into sign language works in practice shows an example from two sign language translation providers in Germany. In conclusion, the visually accessible information on the Web might have an impact on the quality of Deaf people's lives. Safe Communication in Health Care

The theme of this thesis is "Safety Communication regarding to foreigners in health-care facilities". The main purpose of this thesis is primarily concerned with determining how selected health-care facilities ensure communication with a foreigner patient. The main hypothesis examines whether the provider utilizes official interpreters and whether there does exist a higher risk of damage to the patient's health. The theoretical part describes the communication in relation to the Patient-Physician relationship and its function as a tool for prevention of risk in health-care. A substantial part is devoted to a specific communication with the foreigner patient during a medical treatment; specifically, it deals with the issue of language barriers and interpreting. Subsequently, the period in which the foreigner is able to receive healthcare is described in a separate chapter; particularly regarding acute cases, e.g., the issue of medical tourism, cross-border healthcare and insurance of foreigners with subsequent reimbursement. The last chapter of the theoretical part is concerned with Czech and international legal regulations and hospital standards with regards to interpretation and foreign languages. Development trends in Russian interpreting theory at the turn of the 20th and 21th centuries

The present Master's thesis Development trends in Russian interpreting theory at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries is a theoretical study dedicated to the current situation in the interpreting theory in the Russian Federation. The aim of the thesis is firstly to analyze the information available on the development of the Russian interpreting theory within the international context, research being carried out by the current Russian authors, universities providing education in both conference consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, professional organizations associating highly-qualified translators and interpreters, professional journals, and the situation on the market in the field of interpreting, and secondly to draw a conclusion regarding the overall present situation, its probable reasons and assumed future development. Besides the introductory and conclusive chapters, the thesis is divided into four parts. Creativity in simultaneous interpreting

This work deals with creativity in simultaneous interpreting. It regroups knowledge about the creativity in different fields, mainly in psychology, and presents the actual state of the research of creativity in translatology. It brings out the similarity of interpreting with improvisation and art, which are both highly creative. On the basis of the existing models of process of interpreting, it proposes an empirical study of the product of interpreting, using language transformations, with the aim to prove that simultaneous interpreting is a creative activity on more levels (lexical, syntactical and semantic). This experiment was not convincing on a lexical level, but in general it helped to confirm that interpreters are creative during simultaneous interpreting.

History and the present code of ethics in the helping professions

This work is focused on issues of codes of ethics. It outlines the historical roots from ancient times to the present. It presents information on the principles, rules, standards and aims which combine ethical codes. The second part of this work is focused on the Code of ethics of sign language interpreters, which was created by Czech Chamber of Sign Language Interpreters. It analyse in detail each point of this Code of ethics and presents basic specifics and principles of interpreting. The main aim of this work is to analyse complience with the principles of the Code and analyze overall condition of interpreting services in the Czech Republic. These analyses is based on the interviews with the interpretor and the deaf, which represents two opposing views on this issue.

Ángela Collados Aís and Her Contribution to the Development of Translation Studies

This Master's thesis provides an overview of the work of the contemporary Spanish interpreter, teacher and researcher Ángela Collados Aís. It consists of the author's short biography, the analysis of her research in the evaluation of interpreting quality including an introduction into the issue, and an overview of her published works on interpreter training. Selected chapters include a brief subjective reflection on the text in question. The main motivation for this work was to acquaint the Czech academic community with this figure of Spanish translation studies. This is a theoretical thesis, similar to other student works on important figures on the international translation studies scene.

Handling complaints in an organization providing interpretation of Czech sign language

The diploma thesis is focused on handling complaints in organizations providing social services. The process of handling complaints is conceived in the work as a process which, if properly set up and coordinated within the organization, can be useful in improving the services provided. The thesis summarizes professional theoretical knowledge in the field of complaint handling, describes the Czech legislative anchoring of work with complaints and offers an overview of possible processes procedures, rules and practices that can be used in practice. The practical part of the work is focused primarily on handling complaints in the field of providing interpretation of Czech sign language. Part of the diploma thesis is qualitative research, in which the process of handling complaints in the selected organization is diagnosed in detail. The results of the research include suggestions for possible procedures and recommendations that can help the organization streamline the complaint handling proces and can also be an inspiration for organizations that are open to a critical approach to their own complaint handling and possible implementation of changes.

Community Interpreting for the Deaf in the Czech Republic - current situation

This bachelor thesis deals with a current situation in the area of community interpreting for the deaf. The first part focuses on the definition: the community interpretations and the profession that we can meet in the community interpreting. There is a comparison of the community interpreting for the deaf and the community interpreting for foreigners and migrants, this involves a comparison of the ethical codes of both target groups. Briefly we are going to introduce a history of interpreting for the deaf. This thesis provides information about a supplier of community interpreting in the Czech Republic, that is the register of social services and The Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. The second part deals with a questionnaire survey on the functioning of individual providers of community interpreting for the deaf, compared to providers of community interpreting of community interpreting for the deaf at present.
