The Intractability of The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Comparing The Delegitimizing Discourse in Political Speeches by Benjamin Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas from 2015 until 2018

This bachelor's thesis views and analyzes the Israel-Palestinian conflict through the lens of Louis Kriesberg's intractable conflict theory (Kriesberg, 1998) and Daniel Bar-Tal's theory of delegitimization (Bar-Tal,1998). This work compares mutual delegitimization and the discourse of the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas by using a thematic discourse analysis. This work builds specifically on the theory of delegitimization of Neta Oren and Daniel Bar-Tal (Oren, Bar-Tal, 2007), which consists of five dimensions of delegitimization: dehumanization, trait characterization, outcasting, political labels, and group comparison. A sample of speeches of Benjamin Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas from the years from 2015 until 2018 has been analyzed. The delineation is chosen in this way since in 1994, peace accords between Israel and Palestine broke down. Also in this period character of conflicts changed to so-called Third intifada, which consists of series of smaller frequent conflicts. The Construction of "Dangerous dogs" in Blesk and Lidové noviny in the years 2001 and 2011

At the end of the 20th century the issue of so called "dangerous" dog breeds has become increasingly discussed in some European countries. These dogs are considered so threatening that some countries have decided to regulate or restrict their breeding by law. This thesis looks at the articles in Blesk tabloid and Lidové noviny daily newspaper in the years 2001 and 2011 and explores how the dangerous aspect of these breeds was constructed there. Through discourse analysis it investigates the image of "dangerous dogs" presented in these newspapers and what these representations imply. The results of the analysis confirm that all the selected materials explicitly construct the image of dangerous dogs and at the same time implicitly suggest the existence of their "positive" counterparts which helps drawing the line between "good" and "bad" dogs, and hence also between "good" and "bad" owners of the dogs. In all cases, it is apparent that the issue thematised on the level of dog breeds in fact charaterises the relation of man to the animal as well as the society. Discourse Analysis of Representation of the Greek Crisis in Wall Street Journal

This thesis analyzes media representation of Greek crisis in the Wall Street Journal at the time of parliamentary elections in Greece in June 2012. Using the method of critical discourse analysis the thesis characterizes the specific representation, while focusing on the representation of key actors, their relationships and the economic program called austerity. This thesis argues that the representation reflects the discourse of neoliberalism, it demonstrates that it legitimizes the austerity plan and it identifies the means of argumentation, on which the discourse draws.

Islamophobia and Czech public space. Reception of cartoon affair

The theoretical part of the thesis will define the concept of Islamophobia on the basis of foreign and Czech literature. Starting point will be, inter alia, Pavel Barša's concept of the "new xenophobia" as well as a comparison between the historical anti-Semitism and contemporary Islamophobia by Matti Bunzl at the same time reflecting the arguments of critics of the concept, as they were presented by Robin Richardson. Following will be a discursive analysis of two Czech media resources: webportal Eurabia, which was the main representative of the Czech Islamophobic rhetoric in the period (2006) and a leading newspaper Mladá Fronta Dnes. The analysis will monitor the ways in which the Mohamed cartoons controversy was thematized, applied characteristics and means of expression. At the same time the thesis will confront the analysis to more general issues stemming from the dialogue with theoretical conceptualizations of Islamophobia: Can we define the analyzed sources' language as Islamophobic? Does Islamophobia actually falls into the definition of "new xenophobia", or is it only a successor of "old" xenophobia? Public space: Case study Old Town Square in Prague

The purpose of this diploma thesis is to examine how local citizens and the expert community perceive the current status of the Old Town Square in Prague. At present, the attention is very often turned to the possible completion of the Old Town Hall and the overall physical arrangement of the area. Thesis will be based both on the study of historical and present documents. Initially, the focus will be on determining the current situation and use of the square, later on we will discuss the completion of the Old Town Hall and comprehensively the use of area as such. Based on interviews with residents I will evaluate the satisfaction of local citizens with the current purpose of this place, what is their use of the square and what local people think about the completion of the Old Town Hall and other objects situated on the square.

Mother-infant bonding - a historical comparison

Bonding is an emotional and biological process that creates a bond between a mother and her child and is among others important for easier breastfeeding, faster recovery of the mother etc. It is important to support it by an early contact between the mother and her newborn child. The diploma thesis aims to compare the discourse regarding mother-infant bonding and its support in our country around the year of 1980, when the rooming-in system appears, up to the present, with the milestone between 1998 and 2000, when the Centre of Active Birth was established as a result of changes in birth care that occurred then and which started to offer a different kind of care from the model that was known and used in the Czech Republic at that time. Emphasis will be put on the development of the discourse, changes in birth and after-birth care it has brought and changes of its participants and the role which women have as receivers of care. The theoretic part introduces the relatively little-known term 'bonding' and its support from the biological and social points of view, then discourse analysis will be applied in the methodological and experimental parts of the thesis. Slovak Political Parties in the First Czechoslovak Republic : Analysis of the Program Goals

The bachelor thesis deals with political parties, which operated in the Slovak during the first Czechoslovak Republic. The aim is to analyze the political programs of the parties, namely the programs of Republikánská strana zemědělského a malorolnického lidu, Československá sociálně-demokratická strana dělnická, Komunistická strana Československá, Hlinkova slovenská ľudová strana and Slovenská národná strana. I'm going to analyze how particular requirements, which relate to Slovakia, modified over time, disappeared and appeared in connection with the historical context. I am going to apply the discourse analysis as a research method. I am going to use formal political programs, historical documents as secondary sources and other publications dedicated to this historical period. The main research question will primarily concerned with issues of institutional organizations, competences, government structures, Czechoslovakism or autonomous requirements. I will search for all terms related to these topics in political programs. I will be interested in issues relating to the Slovak question. I will focus on the differences between Slovak and countrywide's political parties. The data will be evaluated and compared to each other in the conclusion.

Media image of the Soviet Union in selected Communist and Christian Democratic weeklies during the Third Czechoslovak Republic The paper deals with selected aspects of the media image of the Soviet Union during the Third Czechoslovak Republic. Its aim is to analyze the mechanisms of media image construction in two journals of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and in two weeklies of the Czechoslovak People's Party. Partial aim represents an effort to compare the resemblance of discourse of the USSR between Communist and Christian Democratic journals and then effort to capture eventual changes of the discourse image during the analyzed period. To achieve the objective we use method of critical discourse analysis inspired by the design from the pen of J. P. Gee. The first part presents historiographical outline of specific socio-political conditions of the Third Republic. Second, theoretical and methodological chapter provides an overview of the conceptual framework embedding that is used for the text analysis. The research part identifies that some discursive aspects of the image of the USSR in Communist and Christian Democratic conception seem to be diversifying over time, others are different from the outset.

The role of the Czech public media in the pension reform discourse

The thesis 'The role of the Czech public media in the pension reform discourse' aims to provide a critical reflection on the role of the Czech Television and the Czech Radio in the debate over the changes in the pension scheme of the Czech Republic. The principal method used for that is the discourse analysis, which comprises quality and quantity analysis of the media output, interviews and personal observation. The research project focuses on the context the debate over the pension reform occurs and how it is presented in the public media. The theoretical part summarizes the theoretical concepts used in the research project, i.e. concepts from the field of public policy, social policy, mass communication and discourse analysis. The empirical part examines the institutional development of the pension reform, its variations in political, scholarly (Czech and international) and public discourse. The major part of the research project is based on the discourse analysis of the pension reform discourse in the Czech public media. The role of the public media in the pension reform discourse is deduced on the basis of the theoretical and empirical parts.

National Identity in the Propaganda of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (May 1945 - May 1946)

National legitimacy played in the politics of post-war Communist Party of Czechoslovakia an important role. The addressees of communist policy should primarily be "members of the nation." The subject of my research work in this way was the formulation of national identity and its role in the Communist politics in the first postwar year, especially the cultural field. For the conceptualization of the concept of propaganda in the Communist Party, I was inspired discourse analytical approaches that have helped me in exploring answers to the question of the role of Czech national identity in the propaganda of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia.
