Švelch, Jan ; Dvořák, Tomáš (advisor) ; Slussareff, Michaela (referee) ; Piorecký, Karel (referee)
Paratexts to Non-Linear Media Texts: Paratextuality in Video Game Culture Jan Švelch Abstract The thesis explores paratextuality in the video game culture. This concept coined in 1982 by Gérard Genette in the context of literary publishing has been throughout the last thirty-five years adopted by other fields, including television and film studies, and game studies. However, the recent appropriations of the paratextual framework significantly deviate from its original conceptualization and cause terminological confusion. Still, paratextuality has the potential to provide a unique insight into cultural practices across various cultural industries, including video games. Figuratively described as a threshold, the concept of paratextuality deals with often overlooked elements of media ecosystems, such as promotional materials or instruction manuals. In the thesis, I present a thorough critical review of the current state of paratextual research. Due to its unsatisfactory state, I propose an updated paratextual framework, which builds on the theoretical foundations of textual transcendence. Its more practical dimensions then acknowledge the cultural specificities of the video game cultural industry. In the empirical part of the thesis, I focus on video game trailers and analyze both their formal qualities as...

The author of the thesis provides the list of the authors that were translated in the Czech Lands in that period, and comments upon the literary tradition related to it. Due to the extensive amount of works, the thesis is divided into several chapters, introducing four specific periods: 1945 - 1948 (the end of WWII - the beginning of the Soviet control), 1949 - 1968 (Soviet control - the occupation of the Troops of Warsaw Pact), 1969 - 1989 (the occupation - Velvet Revolution) and 1989 - 2014 (Velvet Revolution - "Velvet Divorce" - the present day). Šťastná, Zuzana ; Tobrmanová, Šárka (advisor) ; Hilský, Martin (referee) ; Beran, Zdeněk (referee)
The PhD thesis studies the translations and the overall reception of John Donneʼs poetry in the Czech literary culture. Its introduction explains the choice of the topic, outlines the structure of the text and the main question to be answered: to what extent Donne has become a significant presence in the Czech cultural context and how his work has been transplanted through translations. The first chapter gives a brief overview of the historical changes in the appreciation of Donneʼs poetry and, drawing on a range of Donnean literature, attempts to define the main features of his poetics. The second chapter traces the gradual building of an awareness of Donneʼs poetry among Czech readers through translations, translation paratexts and references in the works of Czech literary scholars. It introduces the Czech translators of Donne and discusses their motives for translating his work where these could be ascertained. The first part of Chapter 3 describes the method used in analyzing the Czech translations. It introduces the model of translation criticism presented by Antoine Berman in his analysis of French Donnean translations (Pour une critique des traductions: John Donne, 1995) and comments on its application in the study of the Czech translations. Gombrich theory of reception of representational works of art
Fejfarová, Tereza ; Ševčík, Miloš (advisor) ; Kubalík, Štěpán (referee)
The aim of my thesis is to introduce E. H. Gombrich's views on the nature of the reception of representational works of art. Firstly I describe the moments in Gombrich's life that contributed to the formation of his views on this topic. Subsequently, I focus on Gombrich's very concept of the reception of representational works of art. My thesis is divided into three parts, in which Gombrich's reflections on reception are thematized. The first part introduces reflections on the participation of the viewer in the process of the reception of works of art. This part demonstrates that the core of Gombrich's views create a distinction between two spheres: "vision" and "knowledge". The second part, in which I tematize Gombrich's concept of reception, introduces his views on the artist's role and discusses the manner and limits of artistic creation. The third part describes Gombrich's reflections on the development of reception, in relation to historical changes on artistic functions. My thesis analyzes Gombrich's reflection, which is that knowledge, experience and memory have a dicisive influence on the perception, interpretation and the creation itself of the work of art. In another part of my thesis, I paraphrase Gombrich's reflections of the perspective representation and I pay attention to the...
