Polish foreign policy towards Ukraine between the Orange Revolution and the Euromaidan: political rhetoric
Zakrzewska, Marta ; Vykoukal, Jiří (advisor) ; Šmidrkal, Václav (referee) ; Wilson, Andrew (referee)
The following dissertation looked at the problem of Polish foreign policy towards Ukraine between the Orange Revolution and the Euromaidan crisis, as it was expressed in the political rhetoric. Importantly the work drew on the tradition of the Polish émigré journal Kultura and the rich historical background of the Polish-Ukrainian relations. This was done in order to prove the hypothesis that although the recent strategy towards Ukraine borrows from the historical concepts, it does so incoherently. In essence, Polish authorities today prefer to design their own strategy, while references to the Kultura review serve as a bridge to keep a consistent image about Polish Eastern Policy. What has been also discussed was the division between the so-called romantic and pragmatic approach towards Polish Eastern Policy. The dissertation demonstrates that in general the labels are used rather mechanically. As such, it is often difficult to draw the line between romantics and pragmatics among Polish political class. The research was conducted with the use of qualitative content analysis methodology and supported by the constructivist theory. Its results are presented in a form of a set of categories that correspond to the main themes, which have been observed throughout the collected textual material. A...
Situational Parameters and Formality Scale: Multiaspectual Analysis of Authentic Discourse Samples
Svobodová, Denisa ; Pípalová, Renata (advisor) ; Matuchová, Klára (referee)
The thesis aims to investigate the influence of situational parameters on the choice of lexicogrammatical units of language producers. The main focus is placed on the register of language and individual aspects of it are introduced. The phenomenon of human language use is approached specifically from the point of view of sociolinguistics in order to prove the importance of the role of language in social interaction. The practical part of the diploma thesis is dedicated to the multiaspectual analysis of three authentic discourse samples, which differ from one another in the contexts they take place in. Based on the proportion of individual parts of speech in each of these samples, a scale of formality is finally designed in order to determine the most and the least formal of them.

Benešová, Kateřina ; Kladný, Tomáš (advisor) ; Marcelli, Miroslav (referee)
Submitted thesis follows up clowning as phenomenon that can be approached in different ways and understood from different points of view. The perspective depends on a theoretical base and methodological tools, including a conceptual apparatus. Because the viewpoint of the phenomenon is the core of submitted theses, I have decided to use as a methodological tool discoursive analysis, particularly bakhtinian analysis. Theoretical background is provided by Mikhail Bakhtin's theories and concepts (dialogism, heteroglossia, speech genres) and Julia Kristeva's theory of intertextuality (that was inspired by bakhtinian thinking). One of key terms of this theses is the concept of transgression which relates to supposition that transgression is one of principal features of clowning. The theses submits confrontation of two different approaches to the phenomenon of clowning. First one is provided by structuralist model by Paul Bouissac. Bouissac describes clowning as an abstract system, relatively static and closed code, which is builded of stabilized signs. His conception presents clowning as a phenomenon firmly tied up with the circus structure. Although Bouissac defines transgression as a characteristic feature of clowning, from his point of view is this transgression limited by borders of circus. Crossing...
State Support of the Art: media discourse and public attitude
Zahradníčková, Zuzana ; Šafr, Jiří (advisor) ; Vojtíšková, Kateřina (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with the issue of public attitude towards the state cultural policy. It examines the changes of media discourse regarding the state support of the art after 1989. Articles from "Lidové noviny" and "Právo" from the years 1990-1993, 1995-1996, 2005 and 2013 have been analysed. The selection focuses on such periods in which the issue of the relation between the state and culture was discussed in a greater extent (the period of essential changes of cultural infrastructure within the framework of economic transformation, publishing of the so-called White Book as the first cultural policy draft, discussion regarding the manifestation for "1% for the Culture" and the petition action "Safe the Culture"). The results of critical discourse analysis of media texts are complemented and partly confronted with the quantitative analysis of public opinion polls.
