The Velvet revolution in Nachod. Its "winners" and "losers"
Škoda, Jáchym ; Valeš, Lukáš (advisor) ; Urbášek, Pavel (referee)
This thesis deals with the problem of the Velvet revolution in a small provincial town called Náchod. My purpose is to describe the political situation before the revolution, during it and after the revolution ended. I used two methods for my research. First of them was regular text analysis of documents in archives and the second source I used was the method of Oral history. Oral history enriches us with knowledge of living witnesses who help us understand reasons, motivations and feelings of people who took part in an important part of our history, which Velvet revolution surely is. To understand them even better I shortly described their life stories and their position during the revolution. I made life story interviews with 4 members of the Czechoslovak Communist Party and with 5 members of the Civic Forum. So we can hear opinions of both considered sides. At the end of the thesis I compared my conclusions with the conclusion doc. PhDr. Lukáš Valeš, Ph.D. made in his dissertation describing Velvet revolution in a small provincial town Klatovy. At the end I came to a conclusion that Velvet revolution changed political status of Czechoslovakia and its economy but the same people remained powerful.
Development of the Rudé právo during 1972-1991
Petrů, Jan ; Cebe, Jan (advisor) ; Bednařík, Petr (referee)
This thesis Development of the Rudé právo during 1972 - 1991 discusses the activities and developments of this journal and its editors at a time when in Czechoslovakia began the period of normalization, causing compaction ratios and purges especially among journalists. The other titles had to respond to this situation, including the Rudé právo itself, which was, however, in exceptional circumstances, as reported directly to the directives of the Central Committee of the Communist Party. In the Rudé právo so appeared only official information (political, social, cultural and sports), which corresponded to the ideology of the Communist Party. It is therefore interesting to investigate this periodical in the context of contemporary events and to analyze its activities in connection with the fact that we now have. The editor's work was based on the discussions and proposals adopted at a meeting of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and its Secretariat, whose member was also editor in chief of the Rudé právo. The journal had automatically secured the highest allocations of newsprint, even during the late '80s, when it was real shortage of this material. After 1990, when began the consolidation of printed periodicals, the Rudé právo transformed into a joint-stock company whose majority...

I concentrate my interest particularly on following thematic fields: organizational activity, personnel administration, activities in trade unions and acting in bodies of local self- government (ONV and MNV Ústí nad Labem). Naturally I touch activities of other political parties with whom Communists clashed when they aimed to reach their goals. The work should globally depict and appraise activities of KSČ in the district and put them into wider context.

Hobl, Elisabeth Anna ; Vykoukal, Jiří (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
CHARLES UNIVERSITY IN PRAGUE FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES Institute of International Studies Elisabeth Anna Hobl Changing the interpretation of monuments for the purpose of influencing the Czechoslovak collective identity through Rudé Právo and presidential speeches (1948-1957) Masters thesis Prague 2015 Abstract The Communist Party of Czechoslovak (KSČ) tried self-servingly to shape the interpretation of Czechoslovak history. National identity can theoretically change over time by adapting amongst others collective memory. As collective memory also consists of several components the thesis focuses on early attempts to influence Czechoslovak national identity by altering the meaning of certain historical events represented by specific monuments in the period 1948- 1957. A monument's meaning derives from discourse and traditions. The analysis shows that Rudé Právo articles and Presidential speeches were part of a discourse used to influence the meaning of monuments. The case studies: Bethlehem Chapel was to symbolize the historical Hussite legacy continued by the KSČ; the Monument of National Liberation was to commemorate World War Two soldiers and important communists; the Monument of the Soviet Tank Drivers was to commemorate the Red Army as Czechoslovakia's sole liberator. These interpretations were meant...

Sýkorová, Pavla ; Doskočil, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Mücke, Pavel (referee)
A professional life of secondary school teachers of Czech gymnasiums (rough equivalent of British grammar schools) in so called normalization period is presented in this thesis using autobiographical recounting, contemporary documents and archival materials. The author mentions the choosing of their careers, their studies and ensuing start of their teaching practice that took place in late sixties. Author puts emphasis on mapping of the leading role of the Communist party of Czechoslovakia in the workplace during the so called normalization period and how it was perceived by the teachers themselves. Author shows the role of the communist party using teacher's reviews, entrance examinations and complex assessments. Later on, author elaborates the mechanisms used to keep school "socialistic" up to the year 1989: controls, deliberations and meetings, schoolings, school phraseology, material provision, anniversary celebrations, voluntary works, skiing and defense courses, sister trips and teacher's role in society. In the end, the thesis maps a downfall of communist party's leading role at schools and the transition to a democratic education after the year 1989.

The paper deals with selected aspects of the media image of the Soviet Union during the Third Czechoslovak Republic. Its aim is to analyze the mechanisms of media image construction in two journals of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and in two weeklies of the Czechoslovak People's Party. Partial aim represents an effort to compare the resemblance of discourse of the USSR between Communist and Christian Democratic journals and then effort to capture eventual changes of the discourse image during the analyzed period. To achieve the objective we use method of critical discourse analysis inspired by the design from the pen of J. P. Gee. The first part presents historiographical outline of specific socio-political conditions of the Third Republic. Second, theoretical and methodological chapter provides an overview of the conceptual framework embedding that is used for the text analysis. The research part identifies that some discursive aspects of the image of the USSR in Communist and Christian Democratic conception seem to be diversifying over time, others are different from the outset. Henzl, Lukáš ; Novák, Miroslav (advisor) ; Gelnarová, Jitka (referee)
This work offers an analysis of social democracy in the Czech lands in 1916 - 1921. The aim is to describe the process and the causes of the collapse of the ČSDSD. This gave rise to the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. The study seeks to answer the question of why the Communist coup in ČSDSD failed. The introductory part deals with the historical development of the party against the background of national and world events. The main accent is set on the analysis of the two wings within the party: the left (revolutionary) and the right (reform). These wings are examined from the perspective of Giovanni Sartori and the sociologists of policy of the time, Johh Mertl and Robert Michels. This is complemented by the inclusion of the party into cleavages by Stein Rokkan and Seymour M. Lipset. The study also contains information about developments in the number of party members between 1913 and 1924, reflecting the decline in the war years and especially after the collapse of the party. The following chapter is dedicated to the strength of social democracy in the legislatures in comparison with the other Czech, respectively Czechoslovak parties. It shows the position of social democracy within the party system and its real influence on the direction the Czech and, later, Czechoslovak nation took. The text is...
