DV8: Male bodies in the dance for camera
Mrázová, Adéla ; Svatoňová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Španihelová, Magda (referee)
This bachelor thesis is occupied with the image of man body in the screen dance ganre and focuses on a few carefully chosen movies, in which the body is invastigated as a symbol and expressive element. All the researched movies (Strange fish /1892/, Enter Achilles /1896/, Dead Dreams of Monochrome Men /1989/) were created by DV8 Physical Theatre. I am interested in the way those movies relate to the phenomenon of masculinity, how they represent it and make it an aesthetic object, how they refuse or affirm the ideas of its fulfillment. I use the feminist and gender theories to define masculinity and as my primary methodological resource. I also put the movies in the historical context of the development of dance and trace influences that enabled DV8 Physical Theatre to represent the male body the way it does.

Friendship between heterosexual woman nad homosexual man and its effect on the social construction of identities
Brzobohatá, Dana ; Sloboda, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Čada, Karel (referee)
The thesis deals with a friendship between heterosexual woman and homosexual man, the way it is created, the way it is maintained and the threats it has to face. The thesis defines the meaning of essential theoretical concepts such as gender, sexuality, friendship or intimacy and trust. It is based on ten semi-structured interview with women who define the relationship with their gay friends as a close one. It reflects ways, how gender and sexual identities are negotiated in the friendship, puts friendship with a gay man into a broader context of friendly relationships in a heteronormative society and traditional binary oppositions of feminine and masculine. The thesis also looks into strategies of how the informants construct their own identity, identity of their gay friend ad where they place the boundaries of this relationship.
Gender stereotypes in TV car commercials
Salomonová, Markéta ; Trampota, Tomáš (advisor) ; Vochocová, Lenka (referee)
Gender stereotypes and the prejudices associated with them are a frequently discussed issue in the society as well as in the academic world. Even though there is certain evidence of the changes in the media presentation of masculine and feminine roles, the stereotypical illustration of men and women still persists and the media have a significant impact on gender socialisation (Renzetti, Curran, 2003). TV advertising is a typical example of a media format presenting masculine and feminine genders unequally. This thesis examines this assumption focusing on the TV advertising of cars. I also follow-up on my bachelor thesis in which I dealt with the gender stereotypes in the TV advertising for children. In the research background and theory I concentrate on the general understanding of the biological and social views of gender, gender development and gender socialisation. I also provide a short introduction to the media as well as TV advertising theory. The methodological part explains the reasons for the usage of the selected research method and forms guidelines for the data analysis. 54 unique advertisements were analysed using quantitative content analysis which examined 24 variables associated with the three main categories: the advertising itself, the promoted car(s) and the participating...
Gender and sexuality: Differences in sexual behavior based on gender typology according to S. Bem
Hlivka, Michal ; Šulová, Lenka (advisor) ; Weiss, Petr (referee)
Our concern in this work was a shared field of study between gender and sexuality in the search of underlying variables of sexual behavior. Basically our scope was to gather data to empirically support one of the theoretical approaches of sex differences in sexual behavior - essentialism, explaining behavior on the basis of biological sex or evolution; or social constructionism applying variables like gender or masculinity and feminity. For this purpose, 602 participants (166 men, 436 women), aged 18-45 yr., filled out the Bem Sex Role Inventory, and the Inventory of Sexual Behavior. Results in general support the social constructionism approaches, as in the most types of sexual behavior we found differences between gender groups, but not between the sexes. However, explanations provided by theories of essentialism should not be discarded, as there were also differences between sexes in few specific areas of human sexuality, namely masturbation, and overall sexual activity. Key words: gender, sexuality, masculinity, feminity, sexual behavior, sex differences
Gender schematization in self-description
Vranka, Marek ; Bahbouh, Radvan (advisor) ; Šulová, Lenka (referee)
This thesis critically analyzes some measures of masculinity and femininity. Special attention is paid primarily to a BSRI (Bem Sex-Role Inventory), which is the most widespread but completely invalid instrument for measuring gender identity. At the same time, there is presented an alternative approach to the topic of gender identity based on an application of statistical discriminant analysis technique to generally shared stereotypical evaluations of typical men and women. In empirical part, proposed approach is successfully tested in practice by creating an index of masculinity / femininity. Results of analyzes of relations between the determined gender identity and various other components of gender belief system (cognitive gender schematization, an explicit M / F and gender attitudes) suggest the validity of this approach. Between feminity (regardless of sex) and a measure of traditional gender attitudes has been found small but significant negative correlation (rs = -0.3). Keywords: masculinity, feminity, discriminant analysis, critique of BSRI
