Use of memory tests in the differential diagnosis of early stages of dementia

The theoretical part deals with issues of dementia, memory, primacy effect, recency effect, and the Auditory-Verbal Learning Test. The empirical part consists of quantitative research. The research sample consists of patients with dementia who were tested for their performance in the Auditory-Verbal Learning Test in which I focused on the primacy and recency effects. The aim was to determine the differences between the primacy and recency effects among different groups of patients, as well as to detect the presence or absence of a primacy or recency effect in various populations. This study tries to describe a potential tool that focuses on how individuals with dementia remember new informations. This tool can serve to understand how people diagnosed with memory disorders of different etiology remember new infomation. Full name: Jana Mašindová Supervisor: Mgr. Jana Náhlá Proposal for creation Snoezelen room in a geriatric centre Snoezelen therapy is carried out in a specially adapted room. It is a room equipped with a device that stimulates all human senses. Snoezelen room offers visitors opportunity to experience understanding, interaction and relaxation. Visitors are not forced to do activities; on the contrary, they may apply their own will and practise everything they like and what is enjoyable for them. The Bachelor thesis focuses on the use of Snoezelen room for geriatric clients. There are plenty of workplaces for child clients in the Czech Republic that tend to use Snoezelen room. However, there are only few workplaces dealing with Snoezelen for geriatric population, even though the method is utilized by this clientele abroad pretty often. The theoretical part of this paper summarises the area of Snoezelen and dementi, which abounds in old age quite frequently, as well. Moreover this section describes basal stimulation, which has extensive effect on people suffering from dementia and last but not least a link between the Snoezelen room and basal stimulation is mentioned here. Usage of LOTCA-G battery in occupational therapy by the seniors This bachelor thesis is focusing on assesment by the seniors using LOTCA-G battery (Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment for Geriatric Population). The aim of theoretical part is to obtain basic information about human aging and about efects of aging on the human body, focusing on cognitive functions. It also deals with cognition function disorders and basic methods, commonly used to assess cognitive functions in the Czech republic. The theoretical part describes the LOTCA battery and its variants; compares basic LOTCA battery with its geriatric LOTCA-G variant. The practical part contains three case studies of Sue Ryder Home clients including an assessment of clients cognitive functions using LOTCA-G batery, design and implementation of therapy and comparison of input test and retest.

Dissertation title: Dancing and movement programme for seniors with specific needs. Dissertation objectives: The aim of the Dissertation is A) within the framework of a prospective study, to assess the dancing therapy influence on mobility, self-sufficiency, cognitive state, consumption of psycho-pharmaceutical drugs, depressiveness and quality of life of seniors in institutions. If a significant positive effect is proven, then B) to create an easy-to-implement dancing and movement programme for seniors in institutions with a special regard to seniors suffering of dementia and wheelchair-bound seniors who account for 60%-70% of inhabitants of old people's homes. Besides this, also to verify its efficiency on the health condition of seniors, improvement of quality of life, reduction of healthcare consumption, as well as on improvement of communication between clients and treatment staff. Thesis subject: The Role of Family Carers in the Nursing Home for Persons with Cognitive Impairment. The theme of this thesis is the role of the family carers in the nursing home for persons with cognitive impairment. This topic is very actual due to the aging of society and to the increasing of life expectancy. A proportion of the old people in society increases but in the same time there is a decreasing number of people who could take care of them at home (due to negative population balance, disintegration of traditional family, economic situation and high requirements of the care etc.). Many seniors who are depending on the help of the others (such as people with dementia) spend their old age in institutional care. The qualitative research in this thesis shows that families continue in caregiving even after the admission of their relatives to a nursing home. The aim of this research was to describe the involvement of families in the institutional care and to identify factors that influence this phenomenon. Research was conducted in one nursing home for persons with cognitive impairment.
