Greek Military Junta in Family Reminiscences
Roček, Jan ; Králová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Asavei, Maria Alina (referee)
This thesis examines the period of the Greek military junta through the lenses of then-children's reminiscences. These children, grew up dominantly in Athens, the capital and most likely place where events took place during the junta. Their family, and cultural memory serve as the key component to examining and analysing their collective memory of the Greek junta. The period of the quasi- dictatorship from 1967 until 1974 is to this day regarded as one of the darkest in the modern Greek history. During the colonels'era, political opposition and nonconforming citizens were either persecuted and imprisoned, or exiled to islands. Cultural and political freedom and personal rights were strictly limited. Despite the interviewees being merely children attending primary school, their social circles, families, cultural events, and subsequent years enabled them to create memories, as if they directly witnessed most of the events associated with the junta. The first part of the thesis encompasses theory of collective memories, second and third parts focus on modern Greek history since the end of the Civil War, and on the Greek military junta. The last three sections include the analysis of three concepts which pervaded each interviewees' memories, being the symbolism in education, fear of communists, and...

The Understood Author: A hermeneutical exploration of audiences interpretation of the author as productive practices behind a text
Pavlíčková, Tereza ; Carpentier, Nico (advisor) ; Kuzmičová, Anežka (referee) ; Hermes, Joke (referee)
in English This project builds on the tradition of audience research that theoretically and empirically established that meaning is formed in the negotiation between the text and the reader, that the audiences are agentic, their interpretation of media is contextual and situated, and that they have the potential to resist the media. It argues that it is important to explore people's attention to different sources: who is listening, to whom, and why - and asks how people understand the notion of an author that they encounter in the interpretation of factual media texts, and how this interpretation is brought back into the interpretative act. The thesis subscribes to philosophical hermeneutics as an overarching theoretical as well as methodological framework to devise a concept of an understood author that is a result of the interpretative act, where the author imagined and anticipated by the reader (in the form of prior knowledge and prejudices) is encountered and actualised by the author inscribed into the text. I carried out 28 in-depth face-to-face interviews with Czechs born between 1948-1963 to explore participants' experiences and relationship with media and media authors. Employing hermeneutical analysis, the focus is not to capture what is an author, but how it happened to be so. The...
The Book of Rest
Skalková, Markéta ; Chrtková, Anna (referee) ; Veselá, Lenka (advisor)
The thesis Rest (work in progress) is a record of research on rest. It presents the research that I have been doing since September 2022 in the form of a book – a collection of information (interviews, notes, charts, list of projects with related topics) that I have gathered about rest over the past period of time. The goal of the research is to expand awareness of rest and its importance in our lives and to gather the information necessary for the next phase of the project. The presentation includes an environment created for relaxation and for reading the book. It does not claim to be complete, it presents the point at which I am at in my research on relaxation. It shows possible approaches to the issue, thematizes rest as such, asks what rest actually is, how it can be practiced and what it is good for.
