Self-defense for medical staff of the Emergency Medical Service of the South Bohemian Region
ZELENKOVÁ, Iva
The subject of the bachelor's thesis is "Self-Defense for Medical Staff of the Medical Rescue Service of the South Bohemian Region." This work explores the various possibilities of self-defense - both physical and verbal - applicable to the disabling the aggressor. The theoretical part is focused on the current state of attacking exit crews. It also includes training of medical rescueworkers, including cooperation with the Police of the Czech Republic, as well as some factors that can greatly endanger healthcare professionals in their work. In the theoretical part, both the basics of self-defense - verbal and physical are mentioned, including the procedure of simple defensive techniques, for example against kicks, grips or strangulation. If an attack cannot be nullified by self-defense, we have a number of defenses, usable against the aggressor. Such a solution to the conflict also carries many risks in the area of criminal law, which is why the last chapter of the theoretical section is devoted to legal legislation. The data to process the practical part was obtained in the form of qualitative research using a semi-structured interview method with 10 employees of the Medical Rescue Service of the South Bohemian Region. We investigated whether they had experience of verbal or physical assault, how they prepared for possible assault, and whether they had any self-defense means by which to avert imminent attack in the course of their profession. The results of the investigation indicate that cooperation with the Police of the Czech Republic and early detection of the dangerous situation of the Medical Operations Centre tend to be crucial. All 10 respondents have experienced verbal aggression, half of them have experienced physical aggression. A few respondents expressed interest in self-defense courses, and those who keep fit by moving are interested in contributing to sports activities. This work can be used as an educational material for health care professionals or as a source of information in the area of self-defense and security in the South Bohemia Region.
Nursing care for alcohol-intoxicated patients in the traumatology unit
VRCHLAVSKÁ, Aneta
The thesis addresses the issue of nursing care for patients intoxicated with alcohol in the trauma centre, while being divided into two parts, meaning theoretical and practical. The theoretical part focused on defining the field of traumatology, injuries, ethyl alcohol, and the connection between injuries and alcohol. It also provided a description of patient care in traumatology, the specifics of nursing care for alcohol-intoxicated patients, and communication with intoxicated patients, including communication with aggressive patients. The aim of the research part of the thesis was to describe the specifics of nursing care for alcohol-intoxicated patients and to evaluate the communication between the patient and the nurse. Qualitative research was chosen for the research part. Data collection took place through written and verbal methods in the form of semi-structured interviews in early April. Data analysis was conducted using the pen-and-paper method. Subsequently, the data were organized into a system of open coding, comprising three categories and twelve subcategories. The research sample consisted of ten general nurses working in the trauma centre, six in the standard ward, and four nurses in the intensive care unit. The results indicated that except for one nurse, the surveyed nurses regularly encounter patients intoxicated with alcohol in their workplaces. According to the statements of the informants, the most common types of traumas associated with alcohol intoxication include falls, traffic accidents, suicides, assaults, visits to catering establishments or work in construction. Furthermore, the interviews revealed that the surveyed nurses perceive differences in nursing care and communication with patients who have trauma unrelated to intoxication and vice versa. They find the approach to intoxicated patients more demanding in this regard. In the interviews, the nurses mentioned the frequent practice of dealing with aggressive, uncooperative patients. Some nurses admitted that their personal attitudes towards intoxicated patients often influence their approach to these patients. It also emerged from the interviews that the surveyed nurses are not offered any further education in this area. The obtained results provided insights into the specifics of the issue, indicating potential communication shortcomings with patients for correction. The thesis will serve as a resource for creating simulation training scenarios (Appendix 1) to educate general nurses working in the trauma centre.
Effects of individual experience and habitat on the intensity of interspecific aggression in great spotted and middle spotted woodpeckers
MÁCA, Matěj
Woodpeckers represent an ideal model for studying competition in birds, due to their adaptation to foraging on tree trunks and nesting in tree cavities. The Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocpos major) occupies a wide range of forest stands, while the Middle Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocoptes medius) specializes on old deciduous trees. However, the Middle Spotted Woodpecker has recently become more wide spread, occupying new habitats. In my research, I compared the territorial behaviour of the Great Spotted Woodpecker in relation to the Middle Spotted Woodpecker in the Pelhřimov region, where the Middle Spotted Woodpecker has only recently started to occur and is very rare, with behaviour of the Great Spotted Woodpecker in the České Budějovice region, where both species have coexisted for several decades. In the territories of the Great Spotted Woodpecker, I used playback experiments to observe their reactions to the Middle Spotted Woodpecker, the Grey-headed woodpecker (Picus canus) and the Wood Warbler (Phylloscopus sibilatrix), which served as a control and no reactions was expected. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to evaluate the behaviour. I also compared the representation of deciduous trees in the territories of both species. The PCA analysis showed a very strong intraspecific response of the Great Spotted Woodpecker in the Pelhřimov region, with the Great Spotted Woodpecker exhibiting all observed behaviour types. On the other hand, the response to the Middle Spotted Woodpecker was very low and did not differ much from that to the Grey-headed Woodpecker and the Wood Warbler. However, after comparing the reactions of Great spotted Woodpeckers from the Budějovice region, the reactions to the Middle Spotted Woodpecker in the Pelhřimov region were stronger. This result may suggest that in the Budějovice region both species passed segregation of ecological niches. Furthermore, the results showed that the Great Spotted Woodpecker in the Pelhřimov region spent more time in close proximity to the Middle Spotted Woodpecker mount if there was a higher proportion of deciduous trees in their territory, i.e. a suitable habitat for the Middle Spotted Woodpecker. This suggests that the Great Spotted Woodpecker from the Pelhřimov region may perceive that the Middle Spotted Woodpecker could compete with it in these habitats, and so it attempts to defend its territory.
