Domination of ethnic identity in post-Dayton Bosnia and Herzegovina

The given thesis examines the question of identity in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The country devastated by the war from the beginning of 90s, went through major social changes, which deeply affected contemporary situation in the country. Although, BiH has long history of being quite specific in its characteristics, contemporary state is more complicated than it was imagined by peace creators, volunteers and scholars of international community. Identity within the country is defined by the entity. Every out of three peoples, almost two decades from the war, strongly holds on their ethnic appurtenance. The thesis portrays pre-war cohabitation of three ethnic groups by so called "neighborhood phenomenology" , and by providing certain theoretical insight attempts to depict joined similarities and differences in one society. Public, namely media discourse is highly affected with hatred and discrimination among ethnic groups. Aiming to prove that, at least present it, the author used media discourse analysis of the central news programs of two public broadcasters. Results not only demonstrated discrimination, but provided closer insight in professionalism, or lack of it, and clearly portrayed politically infected program. The New Regionalism and the institutional framework of the regional cooperation in the Western Balkans

The presented thesis is analyzing the regional cooperation in the Western Balkans (WB) focusing on interactions of local actors. Theoretical background is based on the new regionalism, a theoretical approach to regional interactions. Contemporary studies on New Regionalism (NR) actually do not consider the Western Balkans to be part of this process and as a result we lack sufficient information about the basic characteristics of this region. The author proves that the WB is engaged in the process of the new regionalism and in fact by focusing on the institutional structure he demonstrates that several parallel processes are ongoing in the region as for example regional cooperation, integration or cooperation with another region. For the purpose of this research two projects of regional cooperation were chosen, South Eastern European Cooperation Process (SEECP) and the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) which are regarded as the main pillars of the political cooperation in the WB. By examining their structure we may understand the relevance of the region as an independent actor and the general aims of the regional cooperation.

Ion Iliescu and his role in the forming of the modern romanian democracy

The problematic of Romanian transition to democracy after the year 1989 was by its major part determined by the form of previous regime. Because of the extreme pressure and control exercised on the opposition and personal dictatorship of the regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu, no major dissent groups or centers existed, bearing the potential to take part in the overthrow of the regime. In the swift and still unclear events of December 1989, National Salvation Front rose to hold the power, being directed by Ion Iliescu. As a formerly top positioned communist apparatchik, who had been swept out from status and power after several conflicts with Ceausescu, he transferred almost complete communist structure to the newly formed regime, including Securitate, the secret service. Deconstruction of the former regime was actually performed by the execution of the former president and his wife and by trials of several Securitate generals. Iliescu concentrated most of the power around NSF and in contradiction with the original proclamation postponed transition to democracy. The new regime, which was led by Ion Iliescu demonstrated in its ideological presentation and exercise of power apparent similarities with the era of communist rule, nevertheless, it worked under formal democratic framework. Cooking and Dining in Times of War and Peace: Changing Contexts and Modes of Food Production, Preparation and Consumption in Srebrenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina Mgr. Markéta Slavková Abstract (English) This project opens up the topic of armed conflict and subsequent post-conflict development in the Former Yugoslavia from a non-traditional perspective - that of the anthropology of food. At the centre of attention there stand the ways in which the production, preparation and consumption of food were and are carried out in Srebrenica, BiH in the context of the dramatic changes that the region has undergone over the last few decades. Food is the precondition of reproduction, a primary form of interaction with the world, a mediator of socialization, a sign of identity and social cohesion but also a tool of power. In this sense, Farquhar notes that the "mantra" 'You are what you eat,' continues to be thematized by social sciences (Farquhar, 2006: 146). On the other hand, the question of the relationship between social actors and their "daily bread" in conditions of starvation and overall material scarcity in wartime has not been satisfyingly answered. This project, based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork, addresses these issues more closely, affording greater insight into them.

Orientalism, Eroticism and Violence in the Works of Josef Holeček

The aim of this paper is to analyze three themes that can be found on the margin of the overwhelmingly dominant, idealistic description of Montenegro and the Montenegrins in the works of Josef Holeček (1854 - 1929), Czech writer, journalist and translator: orientalism, eroticism and violence. The paper argues that orientalist, erotic and violent images formed the background against which Holeček constructed the dominant positive image of the Montenegrins as heroic Slavic warriors.
