TITLE: Home Literacy Environment of Children of Different Lingual-Cognitive Profiles AUTHOR: Helena Franke DEPARTMENT: Department of Psychology SUPERVISOR: Prof. PhDr. Stanislav Štech, CSc. CONSULTANT: Prof. PhDr. Marína Mikulajová, CSc. ABSTRACT: The thesis deals with the home literacy environment of 87 Slovak speaking children (41 with typical language development, 31 SLI children and 15 children at family risk of dyslexia) at the age of 5 to 7 years and their parents. Their home environment was monitored by means of questionnaires while their abilities were studied via a test battery. The aim of the study was to describe the home literacy environment of the two groups of children at risk of dyslexia as indicated by their linguistic-cognitive profiles. The data show that both at risk groups of children live in a poorer literacy environment and that their parents perform less direct literacy activities then those in the control group. The caregivers' daily hassles in families with dyslexia were affected by their own ADHD. The richness of the literacy environment of both clinical groups correlates with children's phonological awareness and in families with dyslexia with children's reading and writing performance. At the end of the first grade, poor readers of all three groups lag behind in language,...

The study investigates physical, mental and sexual changes in women at the beginning of use or after discontinuation of a combined hormonal contraception. Thirty women were interviewed at least 3 months and at most 2 years after the start of use or discontinuation of combined hormonal contraception. Semi-structured interviews were supplemented by 16- symptom rating scale on which women assessed the results of an imaginary study of side effects of hormonal contraception. Both methods identically demonstrated pronounced effect of combined hormonal contraception on decline in sexual desire and painful menstruation. No clear difference was found in psychical symptoms, although qualitative analysis indicated possible changes. Further research is needed to test subsequent hypothesis.

Šipošová, Barbora ; Marková, Gabriela (advisor) ; Šulová, Lenka (referee)
Recent studies support the hypothesis that oxytocin plays an important role in mother-infant interactions. The aim of the present research was to investigate the connection between Maternal Affect Attunement and levels of oxytocin in mothers and infants during early mother-infant communication, and to explore the relationship between maternal and infants' oxytocin levels. Forty three mother-infant dyads participated in the present study when infants were four months. They were observed in three conditions: 1) Baseline - where no communication took place, 2) Natural Interaction between mother and infant and 3) Modified Interactions - where natural interaction between mothers and infants was disrupted in various ways. During this procedure four saliva samples from mothers and their infants were collected to determine their levels of oxytocin at different time points. To assess individual maternal interactive style Maternal Affect Attunement (Maintaining Attention, Warm Sensitivity) was coded during the Natural Interaction. Results indicated that maternal and infants' oxytocin levels were stable at the four collection points. Maternal oxytocin levels at all collection points as well as overall mean oxytocin level were negatively related to her Warm Sensitivity. Significant positive synchronized as...
