Czech new wave rock music and the politics of Perestroika 1986-1989
Andrs, Jiří ; Rákosník, Jakub (advisor) ; Valenta, Martin (referee)
The diploma thesis aims to capture and explain the changes in the milieu of nonconformist rock music in relation to the policy of Perestroika in Czechoslovakia during the years 1986- 89. The primary methodological framework is created by an interpretive trichotomy where each perspective includes various historiographical approaches (sociology of Ivo Možný, postmodern deconstruction of authoritarian discourse, so-called totality from below, etc.). The chapter dealing with the repression of rock music analyses the working methods of secret police (StB) in the 1980s while revealing the background of several typical cases (Pražský výběr, Visací zámek, Michael's Uncle). Next chapter explains the differing approaches of nonconformist rockers towards the cultural relief represented by the official festival "Rockfest". The last analytical chapter deals with perception of contemporary authorities. In conclusion it turns out that the relationship to the authoritarian horizons underwent the most fundamental transformation. The disintegration of those authoritarian horizons led to transformations inside the social field and contributed to the decline of the regime of state socialism.

Italian and German Left-Wing Terrorism in the 1970s in a Transnational Perspective
Pešta, Mikuláš ; Koura, Jan (advisor) ; Rákosník, Jakub (referee) ; Valenta, Martin (referee)
The dissertation thesis concerns with the issue of the left-wing terrorism in Italy and Federal Republic of Germany in the 1970s. The chosen topic is approached using the methods of transnational studies, which have been thus far applied only exceptionally in the relation to this phenomenon, despite the numerous parallels in different countries. The focus of the research lies in the analysis of the German-Italian terrorist network as a whole, the contacts between the organizations and mutual influence. The direct and indirect comparison of the cooperating terrorist organizations is also a substantial part of the thesis. The protest movement, which spread at the end of the 1960s and from which emerged the future terrorist groups as its most radical branches, was an important transnational phenomenon itself. The first chapter concerns with the analysis of this movement, emphasizing the reasons of its inception and its stances on political violence. The student and worker aspects of the movement are introduced, as well as older roots in the anti-fascist resistance or in the work of the Marxist authors. The thesis finds a special inspiration for the radicalizing Left in the events in the Third World. The thesis further examines the individual terrorist groups, chosen according to their importance and relevance...
The Causes of the Student Protest Movement in the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1960s
Renner, Tomáš ; Pešek, Jiří (advisor) ; Valenta, Martin (referee) ; Pažout, Jaroslav (referee)
The author of this dissertation thesis examines causes and intellectual sources of the student protest movement in the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1960s. He presents two societal concepts of post-world war Federal Republic of Germany. The idea of formed society started in the intellectual circles of the federal chancellor Ludwig Erhard. It had its roots in the experience of economic and political downfall of the Weimar republic and the apocaliptic war that followed. The idea of the long march through institutions was formulated by leaders of the student protest movement who saw it as the only way to change society from within after the failure of marxist revolution in western Europe. Although both concepts lost their appeal in the course of history, they still remain an important contribution to the modernisation process of the Federal Republic of Germany and at the same time are an answer to the initial question concerning the causes of the student protest movement.

Mjartanová, Zuzana ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Valenta, Martin (referee)
Zuzana Mjartanová Electoral success of the Left Party in Germany at the federal and state level: the case of Hamburg. Die LINKE is a new, radical left party in Germany, which established itself as a party of social justice, protest against capitalism and pacifism. Contrary to its predecessor, the party of democratic socialism - PDS, die LINKE got firmly rooted not only in East German states but also in the West, and thereby it guaranteed itself electoral support. This thesis examines the reasons for electoral success of die LINKE at federal level in the elections to federal parliament (Bundestag) in 2009, as well as success in state elections held in 2007-2011. This statement is supported by the chapter about the history and the current achievement of the party in Hamburg. At the beginning of the thesis, historical context is examined in order to compare the success of the party and its predecessors. The next part explains electoral results of the party and indicates main factors of the success: changed political, social and economic situation in Germany, transformation of party membership and electorate as well as the character of the party. The case of Hamburg serves as an explanation of differences between state and federal level. Theoretical analysis is supported also empirically - with the...
