Reflection of political and daily life in the weekly magazine Přítomnost: since munich to second world war

This thesis aims to evaluate the historical context, atmosphere and social and political events of the 1930s through the work of a weekly political magazine 'Pritomnost'. Firstly, the historical development of the magazine is introduced. Moreover, the situation of the mass media in the country during this time period is evaluated. Furthermore, the emphasis is put on the two core personalities of the magazine Ferdinand Peroutka and Milena Jesenska. Secondly, crucial articles of the magazine are analysed. For the purposes of this thesis articles from the periods of 'Second Republic' and 'Protectorate Bohemia and Moravia' were used. The thesis reflects the work of 'Pritomnost' until its suspension. In its analyses of the articles this thesis evaluates the main focus of the magazine, views of the editorial board and the atmosphere of the time. Quotations of these articles have been contextualised to accurately represent the historical events and options given to the editors by the censorship. In the conclusion the findings are summarised and the aims of the thesis are evaluated. The appendices show some key documents related to the magazine's journalistic work.
The status of popular culture incontenporary czech press:the media content and ideas of journalists

This thesis defines wide phenomenon of popular culture and follows the way it is represented in current Czech press. The initial part of the thesis defines popular culture based on the main theoretical grounds. After that popular culture is put in context of the mass society media audiences and emphasize the delimitation of pop culture versus high culture. The theoretical part of the thesis is closed by chapter concerning the role of the press in the process of defining the popular culture in current society. The main focus of the empirical part lies on frame analysis across the spectrum of Czech dailies (Blesk, Lidové noviny, Mladá fronta Dnes) and weeklies (Instinkt, Kulturní týdeník A2, Reflex) that examines how the popular culture is presented to the current readership. The analysed articles were published at the time of broadcasting of the first series of the examined pop cultural event represented by a TV show "StarDance…Když hvězdy tančí". The discovered framework is interpreted in context of the theoretical concepts and subsequently it is confronted with a point of view of the current journalists (by means of semi-structured interviews), who write about popular culture on everyday basis and who in a sense represent a cultural elite themselves. The Diploma Thesis named Social and Political Role of the Revue Parliament (1921-1936) and its Position on the Media Market during the First Republic in Czechoslovakia describes the role of the revue Parliament on the media market in the First Republic in Czechoslovakia. It introduces the period of the First Republic as time of alignment and stabilization of the new country based on democratic principles which were mirrored also in the then media creation. That was characterized by extensive diversity although having been subject to a censorship - in which numerous journals with various specializations and ideological values were finding their place. The Parliament, which I focused on, was significant by being published in the homonymous institution and specialized primarily in sociopolitical topics. It is obvious from its content that it set itself the task to defend an independent position of the republic and to introduce the public to its law and political culture. The trial with protectorate government and its presentation in the contemporary newspaper

The bachelor's work "The Trial with Protectorate Government and its Media Portrayal in Contemporary Press" is focused on judicial process with former protectorate government and its medial presentation. The task was to analyze articles of the periodical press Lidová demokracie, Svobodné slovo, Rudé právo and Čas in the key examined period of months from April 1946 until August 1946. The question of post-war retributions is related to this topic. Post-war period after May 1945 was characterized by the tendency of the state to re-establish political and economy stability and the effort to punish war betrayers and collaborators. The extraordinariness of the trial was proved in many details as application of specific legal framework, nonstandard form of the charge, presence of nonprofessional judges in senates of the extraordinary courts etc. Individual journals informed about the trial and accused ministers with various accent. Considerable media attention was paid especially to the declaration of adjudgement and tendencies to its revision.
Manipulation between the Lines: The Media Image of the USA and Israel in Turkish Internet Press

This thesis examines the way in which the United States of America and the State of Israel are represented in Turkish internet press. The newspapers that have been chosen for the analysis are Zaman and Hürriyet, which are two of the most read newspapers in the country, but at the same time differ from each other in a significant way. The first part concentrates on the history of the Turkish press and also outlines the general characteristics of the chosen newspapers. The second part provides a brief overview of Turkey's relations with the Unites States and Israel. The final part consists of an analysis of the newspaper articles that were published on the official internet websites of the abovementioned periodicals. The aim of this thesis is to examine to what extent the editorial line of both periodicals and the general ideology behind them influences the style of the articles and the criteria which decide the content and selection of these articles. In the last part, I shall also compare and contrast the image of the USA and Israel that Zaman and Hürriyet present their readers.
International Organization of Journalists (1946-1995)

The rigorous thesis: "International Organization of Journalists (1946-1995)" deals with the history, development, aims and activities of the International Organization of Journalists (hereinafter IOJ) in the period from 1946 to 1995, thus since its creation in the year 1946 to the year 1995, when the last Congress IOJ in Jordanian Amman was held. The introductory part of the text is focused on a brief resumption of three most important international journalists' organizations, which were established before the year 1946 - the International Congress of Journalists, the International Federation of Journalists and the International Federation of Journalists from Allied and Free Countries. In the second chapter are first summarized history of IOJ and described main phases of IOJ's development - these are periodizated according to IOJ's Congresses. An integral part of the description and periodization is quotation of main international and Czechoslovak political circumstances, which had a real impact on the organization. The next text is followed by IOJ's objectives, aims, activities and structure. Finally, the IOJ's main persons and the curriculum vitae of the five leaders are mentioned. (English): This diploma thesis called "Expatriot Communities and their journal Nová Doba" deals with the issue of emigration to Argentina. In the first chapters mentions causes of the emigrations, legislations of the czech emigration and first settlement by the Czechoslovak expatriates. It provides informations on Czech expatriates and their expatriates associations. The practical part of this thesis was elaboration of their journal called Nová Doba. The journal is divided into several sections, which are processed in detail. It also includes analysis of advertisements, invitations and advertisements that appear in the magazine New Time. Media discourse of the regulation of media with an attention to cases of publicising information from phone hacking-comparative analysis of Czech and British daily newspapers

This thesis is concerned with the media image of Czech and British press regulation, with a focus on daily newspapers. The theoretical part deals with selected normative requirements for media, the concept of public interest, the legislative framework of the press operation in the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom, self-regulation mechanisms of the British press, and, last but not least, ethical norms and professional practice that comes with the occupation of a journalist. The thesis also presents the main representatives and the basis of critical discourse analysis, the selected procedures of which are then used in the follow-up study of media content. The analytical part focuses on the discourse of selected Czech and British daily newspapers and examines it in the context of two events associated with state intervention into media regulation. Inthe case of the Czech Republic it is the approval of Law no. 52/2009, titled by the media as "muzzle law", in the case of the United Kingdom we are concerned with the exposal of illegal methods for obtaining information by News of the World, a British weekly. Reviews of czechoslovak TV series in the weekly Tvorba during the 1970's

This diploma thesis primarily deals with the reviews of Czechoslovak television series in the weekly print Tvorba, central press organ of Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, in the normalisation period of 70's and 80's. In the second place, it also deals with other relevant articles that are somehow related to the television series issues in general. Additionally, it pays attention to formal aspects of the reviews studied in the thesis (language specifics, form, space and development of the television reviews section etc.) The thesis is divided into two main parts: theoretical and analytical. The theoretical part brings information about the cultural-political weekly print Tvorba, it outlines social and historical context of the period traditionally called normalisation and last but not least gives theoretical background about the phenomenon of Czechoslovak television series. The analytical part works directly with the reviews found and also other relevant articles from Tvorba.
