ODA as an actor in the formation of the right and Czech conservatism
Brožová, Karolina ; Perottino, Michel (advisor) ; Franěk, Jakub (referee)
The aim of this thesis will be to characterize the formation of Czech conservative and rightwing thinking in political practice, which seemed to be something completely unimaginable in the communist environment of the time. Although the roots of Anglo-Saxon conservatism go back to the 18th century, it is difficult to define it as a modern ideology at this time. Its meaning has evolved and changed over time, but in some ways it could be said that the basic principles of conservatism have survived to this day. In this thesis, I will primarily reflect on values such as freedom, equality, property, tradition and morality because it is these values that the ODA, as the primary actor with which this thesis is primarily concerned, drew upon in a society shaped by communism and the vision of socialism as the only possible path for the emergence of rightwing politics.
The Right and the Left
Toman, Jonáš ; Kysela, Jan (advisor) ; Chmel, Jan (referee)
1 Right and left Abstract This work is standing on two main pillars, consisting of two parts. The first part describes the left right spectrum, showing possible alternatives, examining whether there is superiority to this concept of classification of the political spectrum and where does it lie. The second part is a look into the history of the left right dualism, its origin and changes through time from its beginning up to the year of 1989, showing the changeability of political conflict, mainly through time but also through space. First part focuses on left right dualism itself, explaining how we understand it, mentioning some competitive concepts and presenting chosen ones. The outcome of this part is an attempt at synthesis of two to three concepts into a final scheme, that is not letting go of the left right division, while trying to include a level of predictive value. The historical second part begins with two critically influential revolutions, which shook the western world, but which ended with formation of democracies comparable to ones we see today. The work opens up the question of coincidence regarding the origin of the terminology of right and left. Showing that the terms were dictated by the seating of the representatives of certain political ideologies. The amount to which this mechanism was...

The Rise of Populism in Germany and Austria. A Comparison of Political Programmes of AfD and FPÖ.
Ježková, Simona ; Mejstřík, Martin (advisor) ; Konrád, Ota (referee)
This thesis deals with the phenomena of Austrian and German populism that is represented by two political parties - Freedom Party of Austria (Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs, FPÖ) and Alternative for Germany (Alternative für Deutschland, AfD). The work focuses mainly on political manifestos that were published in the run up to the elections to German Bundestag and Austrian National Council that were held in July and September 2017. For the both of the parties the elections in 2017 meant a significant success and a rise of votes. While Freedom Party of Austria is an established part of National Council, Alternative for Germany managed for the time the 5 % electoral threshold which is required to become entitled in the Bundestag after being established in 2013. The main aim of this thesis is to analyse their manifestos and decide whether the anti-establishment positions, xenophobic and racist narratives and the emphasis on traditional values are included. Firstly, the theoretical part explains the term of populism, its characteristics and define the examined thematic fields. Subsequently, the analyse focuses on the content of the programmes and their comparison. The result of the research shows that both parties can be definitely described as populistic and that all searched fields are included....
Reasons for Voting Right among Students in Prague
Balha, Alan ; Císař, Ondřej (advisor) ; Slačálek, Ondřej (referee)
The bachelor's thesis deals with the topic that has not been examined in the Czech Republic yet. This thesis is focused on voting behavior of students at public universities, specifically the students of social sciences and humanities in Prague. With regard to the results of foreign studies, wherein these students generally tend to select left-wing parties and candidates, this research focuses on students who vote for right-wing parties and candidates. The aim of this thesis is to determine the reason why Czech students have the opposite preferences than their counterparts in Western democracies. Data are obtained from the interviews with students who cast their vote in the elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic between years 2010 and 2013, and at least in one round of the presidential elections in 2013. Interviews are structured into several thematic areas, such as family, friends, studies, etc., which correspond with the expected effects on voting behavior. Analysis of the interviews showed that the respondents' voting preferences are mostly influenced by the family, high school education and the media, including Facebook. Function of friends lies more in the mutual confirmation of own attitudes. The analysis also revealed that not only the respondents do not know...

Czech party system and its development after 1989: liberal parties in the Czech party system
Rozsypal, Michael ; Charvát, Jan (advisor) ; Šurda Malcová, Karolína (referee)
This work focuses on development of the Czech party system after the country's transition to democracy after 1989. The research principally deals with liberal parties, their development and position in the Czech party system. Liberal parties in the Czech Republic have not been very popular in long time horizon. The main goal of the work is to analyze formation, development and eventual disintegration of liberal parties and to answer the question why liberal parties have found it difficult to establish themselves in the middle of political spectrum. The results of parliamentary elections regularly show that there is a possibility to be elected by circa 7-15% of votes - mainly from the middle-class; despite that fact, no liberal party has managed to gain a long-term support from their voters. The work describes the origin and evolution of liberalism in the world and in the Czech lands. It shows its inclusion in the left-right political spectrum and the difference between political and economic liberalism. The analysis is based on the election results [mainly to the Chamber of Deputies] from 1989 to 2010. The third chapter is devoted to the liberal parties in the past and present in the Czech Republic and in the conclusion, the work attempts to provide answers to the research questions asked in the...
