The ontogenesis of children's speech

The topic of the bachelor thesis is the ontogenesis of children's speech. The theoretical part of the work aims to give a comprehensive overview of the acquisition of speech. It presents historically different concepts of language acquisition and describes development phases according to Ohnesorg and Lejsek. It introduces the periods of speech development and pays special attention to the second year of age. Finally gives a brief overview of speech disorders. Using authentic literary texts to develop reading skills in English at middle school level

This diploma thesis focuses on the usage of authentic literary texts in English teaching at middle school level. Authentic texts present a language input which helps natural language acquisition. The theoretical part is based on the description of conditions for language acquisition, types of authentic texts and a lesson procedure that deals with them. The practical part is realized through the lesson plan of three English lessons at middle school level. The aims of the lessons are to develop reading skills by using authentic texts and to support pupils' reading literacy.

The Construction of Ethnic Minority Identity in Foreign Language Teaching in South Bohemia

This master thesis concerns itself with the topic of creation of identity in relation to language acquisition and its role in the teaching of foreign languages. In the first, theoretical part of this thesis, the connection between language and identity is explored from multiple perspectives. First, identity and its numerous subtypes are described from a psychological point of view. Later, the focus shifts to the relationship between the acquisition of language and the construction of identity. Finally, the role of identity trough language acquisition is explored as a part of the teaching of foreign languages. In the second, practical part of this thesis, the theoretical knowledge is put into practice on the example of foreign language teaching in schools in the region of Budweis/České Budějovice, in south Bohemia. Using two questionnaires a comparison is created between a group of English and a group of German learners. This comparison aims to find answers concerning the role of identity in foreign language teaching classes. The goal of this comparison is not only to (dis)prove the differences in the attitudes of the two learner groups towards their target language, but it also tries to find reasons, factors, and explanations, that would help to clarify these differences. These clarifications are then to be used as the basis for recommendations, which would help to optimise the learning of foreign languages through a stronger identification of the learners with their target languages.

Using podcasts to teach English to young learners

This bachelor thesis deals with podcasts as a way of teaching the English language, mainly focused on children aged 5-7 years before the start of their school education. The podcasts are designed to introduce the English language to children with the help of their first language through spoken audio fairy tales without the help of visual aids. The aim of the thesis is to find out whether systematic use of the first language in audio material for beginning young learners can have a positive impact on their motivation and willingness to listen. The aim of the theoretical part was to gain the necessary knowledge to prepare such podcasts effectively. It therefore explores effective ways of teaching English to young learners, the use of stories to teach English, and the role of the first language in foreign language learning. The practical part reports on research conducted among parents of Czech and Slovak children who had not enjoyed listening to English audio materials prior to the research. The parents agreed on testing a series of the author's original podcasts with their children, and observing their reactions. This bachelor thesis deals with immigration integration politics and programmes of the Czech Republic and the Great Britain, with the main focus on the integration of immigrant children into the society and education system. The work is divided into two parts: each one gives information about Czech and British immigration history and development, integration policies, and the main issues that each of the country is dealing with. All the information and data used in the text come from the latest research and from updated source documents.

Romance influence on English Wordstock

Title of the bachelor thesis: Romance Influence on the English Wordstock Key words: History of English, borrowing, loan word, lexicalization, language acquisition, second language, language interference. Abstract The bachelor thesis Romance Influence on the English Wordstock is concerned with the Romance impacts on English, which is most noticeable in its wordstock, and simultaneously it tries to find out what the awareness of learners of English of these influences is. The practical part is based on research in the form of a questionnaire which was distributed among English students of the Faculty of Education, Charles University in Prague and which consists of four exercises where various Romance specifics can be found. The research revealed that students do not have a particular cognizance of Romance influence but it showed that the longer the students study English, the fewer problems they have with the words coming from Romance languages. It also studied whether students who know the French or Latin language have an advantage when acquiring the English vocabulary. Poor readers

The bachelor thesis deals with the topic of poor readers in the context of reading comprehension. Poor readers are diverse group of readers, who are inferior to normal-reading peers in various aspects of reading. Reading comprehension is crucial skill in the process of acquiring, learning and using informations from every area of human activity. The aim of this thesis is to generally map the concept of poor readers and to identify specific problems shown by poor readers in reading comprehension tests. The theoretical part presents the concepts of mapping the issue, such as literacy, educational methods, reading comprehension. The main part focuses on the characteristics and specifics of poor readers in the context of the simple view of reading. Apart from this, other types of readers such as dyslectisc and poor comprehenders are described and compared to poor readers. The practical section is based on GAČR project - Reading comprehension - typical development and its risks, carried out by PedF UK, in which I took part.
