Lomíček, Jan ; Štaif, Jiří (advisor) ; Jančík, Drahomír (referee) ; Křesťan, Jiří (referee)
Jan Lomíček Doctoral thesis External and internal factors of Soviet Union image creation in interwar Czechoslovakia Abstract The doctoral thesis uses both Czechoslovak and foreign archival sources and period sovietica to analyse the most relevant inner and outer factors influencing the creation of a positive image of the Soviet Union in the eyes of interwar Czechoslovak public. On one hand, there were various mechanisms used by the Soviet propaganda. Here we can mention propagandist image of the USSR which was created according to Czechoslovak sympathizers' needs - pictorial periodicals, foreign broadcasting meeting listeners' demands etc. At the same time, the Czechoslovak public adopted the identical categories that were used by the Soviet side to describe the reality, such as work - education - equality - emancipation - freedom - new versus old - civilization - development - growth. Besides common propagandist means the USSR used also the foreigners' visits to confirm its idealized image. The approach to Czechoslovak citizens was improved after the Soviet travel agency Inturist had been launched. This agency should take care of the foreign visitors. However, the interwar travels to the USSR were not too common and frequent, which was caused both by the Soviet byrocracy and costs of such trips. The...
Repatriation and re-emigration into Czechoslovakia in the context of the post-war period 1918 - 1923 and 1945 - 1948
Lacko, Miroslav ; Doubek, Vratislav (advisor) ; Křesťan, Jiří (referee) ; Jirásek, Zdeněk (referee)
The main research topic of our study is the issue of re-emigration and repatriation movements into Czechoslovakia after the First World War and the Second World War, in terms of comparative analysis. The study focuses on Czechoslovak executive institutions as key actors of migration movements. It analyzes their competence, financial possibilities and the objectives they pursued by promoting migration. The first part of this study defines the concept of migration and incorporates it into the postwar concept. The study also focuses on migrants (in our case re-emigrants and repatriants) and their efforts to return in Czechoslovakia. The central part contains analysis of the three most important executive state institutions - Ministry of Welfare, Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These ministries carried out specific re-emigration and repatriation projects. Our study also draws attention to concepts of "home law" and "citizenship". These two concepts are compared in the third part, from the perspective of executive institutions. This part analyzes the whole process of allocation of citizenship in postwar periods. Our study seeks to answer the questions of what event initiated re-emigration and repatriation processes and what were the intentions of the involved participants. The...

Travels to Utopia. The Image of Soviet Russia within the Czechoslovak Cultural Left in the Interwar Period.
Šimová, Kateřina ; Vykoukal, Jiří (advisor) ; Glanc, Tomáš (referee) ; Křesťan, Jiří (referee)
The proposed dissertation is devoted to the relations of the Czechoslovak cultural left to Soviet Russia in the interwar period. It focuses on the image of Soviet Russia, pointing out that for many Czechoslovak leftist artists and intellectuals it served as a framework for their own vision of an ideal socio-political arrangements. In their view, the image of Soviet Russia stood out as a utopia in the sense that the sociologist Karl Mannheim attributes to this phenomenon. The dissertation follows the evolution of this utopian image among the Czechoslovak cultural left in the early 1920s, maps the changes in its thematic structure and motives and follows its disintegration against the ideological split of the Czechoslovak cultural left in the late 1930s. This development is perceived through the analysis of travelogues in which left-wing artists and intellectuals presented their immediate impressions and experiences from this country. The semiotic text analysis method is being used for this purpose. By analysing the confrontational and transformative functions of the utopian image of Soviet Russia, the dissertation attempts to clarify the attitude of Czechoslovak artists and intellectuals towards Soviet Russia in the context of the socio-political situation of the interwar period and in the broader...

Title: The second life of Zdeněk Nejedlý in Czech historiography and culture Author: Mgr. Václav Nájemník Supervisor: doc. PhDr. Ivana Čornejová, Csc. Department: The History and History Didactics Department Keywords: Zdeněk Nejedlý, second life, methodology, reception, historiography, culture, communism, totalitarianism, literature, art, Bedřich Smetana, Alois Jirásek Abstract: The following dissertation deals with the "second life" of Czech historian, musicologist, reviewer and politician Zdeněk Nejedlý (1878-1962). Its aim is not to elaborate a new biography, but to describe and analyse the influence of this personality on Czech historiography and culture during the communist totalitarian system. His influence is usually perceived as very strong, but seems to have changed over time, and moreover weakened. An important topic will also be the development of the attitude of historians, writers and other cultural personalities to the personality and work of Zdeněk Nejedlý in the context of Czech history in the second half of the twentieth century. The purpose of the work is to show that the personality of Zdeněk Nejedlý is not the only negative factor that worked for society, but that he himself participated actively in the creation of this image. Finally, it also appears that the "second life" of some of...

Čurda, Vojtěch ; Čornejová, Ivana (advisor) ; Mervart, Jan (referee) ; Křesťan, Jiří (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to describe how a literary critic and an ideologist of the Communist Party Ladislav Štoll influenced the making of the Czechoslovak culture in the 20th century. At the same time we try to capture Ladislav Štoll's life in the form of a political biography, which describes his activity in connection to the discussions, polemics and the political development of the Czechoslovak cultural left wing. As a part of the thesis we describe the activity and opinions of Ladislav Štoll in the interwar republic, his attempts to write his own fiction and broadly also his participation in the discussions amongst left-wing intellectuals (so called generational discussion, the controversy around André Gide, polemics about the Moscow Trials). Also his relationship with the thinking of Zdeněk Nejedlý, the heritage of F. X. Šalda and Štoll's opinions before the outbreak of the Second World War is analysed in the thesis. We try to capture Štoll's activity during the Second World War, including the problem of his involvement with the anti-Nazi resistance. The main focus of the thesis is Štoll's activity after the war. We analyse his place in the polemics about socialism and the cultural orientation of Czechoslovakia. We also look at Štoll's influence on the universities including his lecturing at...
