Civil Religion. Audit and Update

PhD thesis assesses the history of the idea of civil religion and proposes a theoretical interface encompassing all its conceptualisations encountered to date (Rousseau, Bellah, Cristi, Parsons, Luhmann, and Lübbe). Civil religion is understood here as a system of reference points through which society, in the process of self-description, projects into the peripheries its autopoietic realities (of the past, future and eternality) so as to lend stability and import to its existence. By relating to these references, a discourse originates which, being characteristic of the presence of thick and comprehensive meanings, enables the society to communicate about its origins, ends and purpose. In its civil configuration this discourse is pluralist and the involvement of its actors is quite restrained. The model allows for an analysis of the entire serious symbol-based communication of the actors (weighty words, religious symbols, nationalism, conspiracy theories and political correctness) within a single context, as well as of preconditions for such communication. The crisis discourse opened in the USA after 9/11 and aspects of Czech life and institutions are also analysed. Left-Libertarianism As a Critical Theory of Society

Precis The Thesis comprehensively describes and explains basic concepts of Steiner-Vallentyne Left-Libertarianism. The introductory part compares this school of Left-Libertarianism with other approaches and advocates the method of critical theory of society being used, which was formulated by Marek Hrubec, successing classical authors of critical theory. This method divides the analyzed phenomena into three phases - critique, explanation and normativity. The critical phase describes relation between the analyzed and reality, while defining the analyzed against it. Explanation clarifies positive elements, which are consequent from the critique of reality and ultimately, the normative phase formulates a specific conception of the elements' realization. In this Diploma Thesis the critical phase is represented by defition of Left-Libertarianism against dominant streams in contemporary political philosophy, with the accent on its differentiation from related approaches, constituting their conception on one's freedom - especially rawlsian liberalism and classical libertarianism. Ondřej Lánský The Examination of One Form of the Atlantic Modernization's Moral Background Abstract This thesis deals with critique of fundamental moral pattern of the Atlantic social space, that shapes some important features of social, political, and human action in the global era and endorses legitimacy of the reigning social order. The main task of this thesis is to show pathological moments of the contemporary development of global society through comparison of some constitutive features of Atlantic and Latin-American societies. The most important theoretical basis for this thesis is Axel Honneth's theory of recognition. As articulations of constitutive features of social normativity (ergo as expressions of shared social imaginaries of social configuration) are used chosen social philosophical concepts: John Rawls' liberalism and Enrique Dussel's philosophy of liberation. The thesis contains therefore four steps in three main chapters. Firstly the author sociologically analyzes the concept of social esteem in the context of theory of recognition. Secondly he examines John Rawls' normative theory of justice. Concept of man as a social being in theories of Axel Honneth and Nancy Fraser: analogies and differences

V předkládané práci se budu věnovat srovnání pojetí člověka v teoriích dvou současných předních představitelů kritické teorie- Axela Honnetha a Nancy Fraser. Ke srovnání teorií Nancy Fraser a Axela Honnetha jsem se rozhodla proto, že, ač se oba autoři hlásí ke stejné společensko-vědní tradici, a jejich teorie tak sdílejí mnoho společných rysů, existují mezi nimi důležité rozdíly, které ukazují, jak různým způsobem je možné požadavky a předpoklady kritické teorie společnosti realizovat. Na pojetí člověka jsem se rozhodla. zaměřit proto, že určitá představa o aověku je vlastní každé sociologické teorii (jmenujme jen namátkou home oeconomicus, homo socilogicus, homo duplex), přičemž právě v této představě (explicitní či implicitní) se promítají nejdůležitější východiska příslušné teorie, protože, ať je předmět dané sociologické teorie definován jakkoli, vždy se předpokládá, že člověk v sociálních strukturách jedná určitým způsobem a z určitých důvodů. Je vcelku lhostejné zda jsou tyto důvody kladeny do společenských struktur, či do psychických předpokladů člověka, či jsou představovány jako určitá kombinace obou těchto prvků. V každé sociologické teorii se tím nebo oním způsobem bere v potaz sociální aktér a pokud má být teorie koherentní, je třeba, aby představa o aktérovi odpovídala povaze jiných částí teorie.

Axel Honneth's critical theory: the principle of enforcement and the challenges of global justice

Ve své diplomové práci jsem zabýval sociální teorií významného německého kritického teoretika Axela Honnetha. Konkrétně jsem se zaměřil na dva problémy, které považuji v konceptuálním prostoru Honnethovy teorie uznání za velmi aktuální a naléhavé. Za prvé jsem se zabýval interpretací důsledků významného pojmového posunu, který do jisté míry Axel Honneth ve své teorii provedl v posledním desetiletí: sociální ocenění vnímá jako rozdělenou kategorii, v které z hlediska kritiky pozdně-kapitalistické společenské formy hraje podstatnější roli studium a analýza výkonu. Za druhé bylo cílem mé studie anticipovat předpokládanou transpozici Honnethovy teorie uznání na globální rovinu. S tímto problémem jsem se zde vyrovnal především na rovině zdůvodnění globálního redistribuce jako základního pnnc1pu kosmopolitní spravedlnosti. Z těchto důvodů byla má studie složena z těchto částí: obecné a heslovité seznámení s metodologickým odkazem kritické teorie s ohledem na tu jeho část, která hraje nejvýznamnější roli v teorii Axela Honnetha. Poté následovalo stručné seznámení s komplexní teorií uznání Axela Honnetha tak, jak ji aktuálně rozpracoval podle struktury: sociální teorie a teorie spravedlnosti. Multikulturalismus v Indii: Selhání politiky diference

For the 70 years since Independence, India has been facing a two-fold problem: on the one hand, there is a strong need of a just society on the basis of cultural and religious diversity. On the other hand, however, there is a strong urge to find an overarching unifying idea which could keep the polity together without any risk of further fragmentation. Taking the communitarian philosophy of Charles Taylor and his distinction between the politics of equal dignity and politics of difference as the basic conceptual framework, the thesis pursues three different objectives. First, to prove that affirmative approach towards recognition of minorities does not provide stability in the Indian case. Second, to rehabilitate the Nehruvian secularism as a viable state ideology of independent India. And third, to interpret the Indian political discourse on the level of political practice as a struggle for hegemony between the elites and bourgeoisie in the Gramscian sense. The rise of identity politics and Hindu nationalism is thus perceived not as an outcome of the failure of the Indian secularism as such, but rather of its ineffective application and subsequent crisis of legitimacy. The New Role of Public Academic Institutions in Civil Society and Adult Education

This diploma thesis is focusing on finding a new way of building a relationship between citizens and public academic institutions through the work of adult educators. It analyzes communication channels of academic institutions used for communication with the public and suggests new ones, based on the principles of knowledge mobilization theory. It draws how to bring elements of active civic participation into Czech society and this is based on deliberative concepts of democracy and principles of social critical theory. Attention is paid to the specification of the role of adult educator as a mediator of communication between civil society and the institution.
