Antonie Novopacká - The Woman of the Middle-Class Strata at the Turn of the 19th and 20th Century
Folková, Linda ; Holubec, Stanislav (advisor) ; Županič, Jan (referee)
This work is a historic-sociological study of middle class women and families during the 19th and 20th centuries, as applies to the life of Antonie Kučerová, née Novopacká. The estate of Antonie Novopacká, period magazines and primary and secondary literature were used as a basis for this work. From a young age girls were brought up to fulfil the role of wives and housewives and consequently their chief goal in life was to have a family. The status of wife was very important at that time. The situation of single women in society was complicated. Having children was an important attribute of married life, but young women were not prepared for this role at all, in comparison to young men, who it was assumed would have had some sexual experience. Little importance was placed on affection and sexuality in marriage during the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. During the 19th and 20th centuries families were dependent on the father, who fulfilled the role of provider and protector. If the father died the family frequently found life very difficult and consequently widows would try to find another partner in life. However, women were also an indispensible part of the family during this period, they took care of the day to day running of the household and naturally brought up the children,...
Unemployment in Ireland
Vosecká, Michaela ; Tichá, Milena (advisor) ; Holubec, Stanislav (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to give an overview about unemployment. There are some reasons for this topic. First of all, it is the fact that unemployment is a very serious problem; secondly, only a good knowledge about it can help us to solve it. The first step to understand the phenomenon of unemployment was being aware of what it really means. Secondly, we had to know why unemployment origins. Then, the kinds of unemployment were introduced and explained. Finally, the thesis focused on the way two main economic schools look at unemployment and how their attitudes towards it can be seen in real politics. That was all for the theoretical part. I have chosen Ireland for the practical part because it is a country very similar to ours (considering the size) and their unemployment rate was 10.4% lower in the year 2000 than in 1991. The surveys of single unemployment rates confirmed the idea that the main reason for this incredible decrease was investments into human sources. In other words, these caused the starting up of the economy and attracted foreign investments which finally led to the previous mentioned low unemployment rate.

Prague Illustrated Courier: The Prague Penny-press as a Window into the World of Commeon Men.
Machek, Jakub ; Štaif, Jiří (advisor) ; Mocná, Dagmar (referee) ; Holubec, Stanislav (referee)
- Jakub Machek Prague Illustrated Courier. The Prague Penny-press as a Window into the World of Common Men. This work is dedicated to early sensational pictorial press (Pražský Illustrovaný Kurýr and its less successful predecessors) and its urban readers, as an example of the rising Fin de siècle popular culture in the Czech lands and its significance for revealing fundamental social and political changes that took place at the turn of the 20th century. During this era, even the members of lower social classes broadened their economical and cultural potency and thus capacity to absorb the development of new common culture generated by the rapid industrialization and urbanization. Production and reception of emerging popular press is analysed as a marker of the new modern urban experience and its social influences. Global pattern of successful mass daily press was, however, modified for Prague audience, its specific local beliefs, values and desires, distinctively different from those of western urban centre dwellers.
Portrayals of men and women in the literature of 19th century with regard to the family influence on its members at particular life periods.
Slavíková, Inka ; Holubec, Stanislav (advisor) ; Blažková, Miloslava (referee)
In my thesis, I have analysed the influence of the family (and the position of the family members within the given roles) on individuals in their particular stages of life - childhood, teen years, adulthood and old age - literally life of a typical family of the 19th century - and its depiction in the Czech fiction of that time. The theoretical basis of the thesis was acquired from a number of professional publications, while the provided illustrations and citations from literary works of art and memoirs of 19th century authors have supported the practical confirmations of arising conclusions. Based on theoretical sources, it can be assumed that Czech families of the 19th century were usually characterised by a dominant position of men. A man was regarded as "the head of the family" not only within daily life, but also during official acts; a man decided about the future of his children, wife and other family members, but still the family showed him a great level of respect and reverence. Contrary to that, the position of women in the family was subordinate; women had no rights towards men, merely duties. The same was applied to the position of children and seniors; the position of seniors was also subordinate to a dominant role of men. Conclusions resulting from the analysis of findings drawn from...

Social situation and daily life of Prague working class in interwar period. Historical-sociological analysis
Holubec, Stanislav ; Kárník, Zdenek (advisor) ; Moravcová, Mirjam (referee) ; Měchýř, Jan (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to outline the social reality and the everyday life of Prague working class between the two world wars. Prague, which was at that time changing into a modern city with growing population, was also the city with the largest number of workers in Czechoslovakia. We have especially focused on working-class families, health and sexual issues, living conditions, cultural life, political attitudes and education. In the thesis, archive sources of the period have been used, namely those of organizations dealing with workers or workers' own organizations like political parties, labour unions or interest groups. Another source of data is a qualitative sociological research of witnesses. The analysis of statistical data, periodicals of that time and other literature have also been employed. We have attempted to show the Prague working class with its rich diversity, as a very heterogenous group merging with other social classes. Apart from social differences, we have emphasized the impact of gender and generation on the everyday life of Prague working class.
