Psychological aspects of the gothic in Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's fiction
Procházková, Ilona ; Pilný, Ondřej (referee) ; Wallace, Clare (advisor)
What is usually understood by the term "Gothic" is the distant and rather obscure period of Middle Ages connoting severe wars, fortified inhospitable castles and the burning of witches. Apart from that, the word is very often used specifically to describe the architecture of this time. However, especially in an English cultural context this word gained a secondary meaning which is not completely unrelated to the first one and which is to a large extent connected with literature. Under the influence of Romanticism, the second half of the eighteenth century bears witness to extended interest in uncanny Gothic castles or ruins, forlorn scenery and other melancholy places, with even greater stress put on its mysterious, obscure and frightening aspects that finally resulted in something which may be called the Gothic revival. Victor Sage writes that, "'Gothic' could connote any of a wide range of overlapping senses: horrid, barbarous, superstitious, Tudor, Druid, English, German, and even Oriental."1 One of the primary goals of Gothic literature was to create strong emotion of fear or even horror. Among the most popular settings of its fiction belong gloomy ancient chambers, buildings with rich pasts, abandoned decaying mansions, graveyards and similar places which help to establish the right atmosphere for...

Statistical analysis of crime Czech Republic
Kroutilová, Denisa ; Langhamrová, Jitka (advisor) ; Arltová, Markéta (referee)
The crime rate is among the highest risk factors and endangers society. By analyzing the development and subsequent predicting future values, you can take steps that would help to reduce crime and create the conditions conducive to the good development of society and security of citizens. Therefore, the State should control crime by one of the most important priorities. This thesis deals with the analysis of crime and number of people prosecuted in the Czech Republic, constructed using time series. Development into the future is estimated in the next three years. Longer forecast should not make much sense because of the rapidly changing laws. The conclusion is devoted to crime in Czech regions. Analysis is performed using cluster analysis, which examines the number of crimes in different regions. The result is a decision that the region together in terms of crime the most similar.

The style of the new objectivity in the early poetical work of Erich Kästner and literary science theories of the new objectivity
Pellar, Ruben ; Stromšík, Jiří (advisor) ; Krolop, Kurt (referee) ; Tvrdík, Milan (referee)
This study examines whether the early poetic production of Erich Kästner , which used to be designated a model example of the production of the German New Objectivity, really fulfils the characteristics of the New Objectivity in the sense of the theories defining the New Objectivity as a literary movement. The question is whether the early and later literary theories of the New Objectivity are really adequate for describing the actual literary production of one author, commonly designated as a product of New Objectivity.

Training courses, seminars, and programmes offered by the non-governmental organisations for foster-parents Centre for Substitute Family Care, Sense and Sensibility, and Fund for Children in Need
Třešková, Zuzana ; Vorlová, Marie (advisor) ; Mašát, Vladimír (referee)
As a subject matter of my dissertation I opted for "Education of foster parents by means of professional educational courses, seminars, programs etc." I believe that educational seminars and also programs developing forest parents ́personality, events enabling them to share their pleasures and worries with other foster parents or just relaxing events are not only enrichment to their lives but are also necessary and beneficial. Within the framework of my dissertation I worked with the offer of three private organizations operating in the region of the capital city of the Czech Republic - Prague: Středisko náhradní rodinné péče, sdružení Rozum a cit and Fond ohrožených dětí. I carried out a survey whether their offer of courses, seminars and programs is sufficient and satisfactory not only considering their extend but also regarding the satisfaction of all needs of forest parents. Moreover, I tried to investigate whether there is any interest on the side of forest parents. In order to find the answer I used the statistical figures provided by the organizations and the results of a questionnare given to chosen forest parents. Although Czech law doesn ́t solve the question of forest parents ́ education in fields such as pedagogy, special pedagogy, psychology, pediatry etc. and this kind of education is totally...

The Puzzle Novel
Stock, Richard Thomas ; Roraback, Erik Sherman (advisor) ; Peprník, Michal (referee) ; Miller, J. Hillis (referee)
This dissertation is based on the claim that the study of the novel has not capitalized on the designation of the novel's unique properties by thinkers early in the twentieth century. My specific determination of the puzzle novel is in a sense merely one example of the kind of study that I see as necessary to further our understanding of both the novel and narrative. I see the effort of narratology in the twentieth century as a necessary project, but ultimately a failure at its own goals. Theory of the novel, meanwhile, seemed better poised to produce useful criticism in the 1930s, but since then has not had the influence on scholarship that it should have had. To deal with this lack, various philosophical works are discussed and used in the dissertation, especially those from Gilles Deleuze and Maurice Blanchot. Three novels are studied in detail as puzzle novels, and although the novels are chosen purposefully, they do not constitute a complete set: Ulysses (1922) by James Joyce, which I call the first puzzle novel in the terms of this study; Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow (1973), the premier postmodern novel, and also an extreme puzzle novel; and Prisoner's Dilemma (1988) by Richard Powers, a puzzle novel that shows the true possibilities of the novel form. This study does not seek to make absolute...

On Azahelicenes: Synthesis, Resolution, Properties and Applications
Míšek, Jiří ; Starý, Ivo (advisor) ; Kroutil, Jiří (referee) ; Macháček, Vladimír (referee) ; Závada, Jiří (referee)
1 Abstract A novel and modular approach to azahelicenes has been developed. Ethnicity: in search of concept
Bulant, Matěj ; Znoj, Milan (advisor) ; Bíba, Jan (referee)
This thesis is an attempt to deal with a challenge that I wrestled with during my fieldwork in Bukovec: how to conceptualize the diversity of collective identities that I identified there. I decided to use the anthropological concept of Ethnicity. Nevertheless, after the publication of Barth's Introduction to Ethnic Groups and Boundaries in 1969, this concept was used in so many ways by so many authors that there is no general definition of it. Therefore, I decided to redefine ethnicity in this paper. I assume that the meanings of denotations such as ethnic group and ethnicity are overlapping with the meaning of other words. Therefore, I delimitated it from the words race and nation in the negative sense, and, on the other side, I also constituted a positive meaning by analysis of journalist discourse.

Corruption as Narrative
Fiala, Šimon ; Kotík, Michal (advisor) ; Volek, Martin (referee)
FIALA, Šimon. Political corruption as a narrative. Prague, 2012. Undergraduate thesis (BA). Charles University in Prague, Faculty of social sciences, Institute of social studies. Dept. of Sociology. p. 59. Supervised by Mgr. Michal Kotík. Abstract Political corruption became one of the most pressing problems of our time. We may say that corruption replaced repression as the main threat to the rule of law. This work attempts to articulate the role of corruption in relation to system legitimacy, assuming Czech Republic and the CEE countries as a model. This work approaches corruption as a narrative, which is being mobilized by the public as a critique of the way the system works. Conventionally, corruption is thought of as a pathology, which damages democracy, quality of governance and economic growth. It will be argued that it also makes sense to think about corruption the other way around - as an interpretive structure which allows introducing sense into the complex organization of society and particularly its negative outcomes. Corruption is a narrative, which allows the public to relate to problems stemming from the workings of the system. This work identifies several dimensions of the problem. It argues that corruption has a notable social dimension, which addresses inequality and injustice in general....

Voltammetric determination of homovanillic acid at boron doped diamond electrode for hollow fibre microextraction
Hrdlička, V. ; Barek, J. ; Navrátil, Tomáš
Presented work deals with hollow-fibre assisted liquid/liquid/liquid microextraction (HF-LPME) and subsequent voltammetric detection of clinical biomarker homovanillic acid (HVA). Three main areas are discussed: hollow fibre assisted extraction of HVA, voltammetric detection of HVA under basic conditions, and sensing in very small volumes. Using HF-PLME, HVA was extracted with 1-octanol as a supported liquid membrane with enrichment factor of 55 after 60 minutes of extraction. A novel method of miniaturized voltammetric determination of HVA using cathodically pretreated boron doped diamond electrode was also developed. Using differential pulse voltammetry, limit of detection, limit of quantificati was 1.9 mu mol dm(-3) on 6.6 mu mol dm(-3).
