Current methods of Machine Translation of text

Movie subtitles as a source of parallel texts
Beňa, Peter ; Bojar, Ondřej (referee) ; Žabokrtský, Zdeněk (advisor)
After learning the basic principles of building parallel corpora, the student will focus on the Czech-English parallel corpus Czeng. The main goal of the work is to improve quality of the Czeng part created from Czech/English movie and series subtitles. Above all, it is necessary to design and implement methods for detecting wrongly aligned (or otherwise problematic) subtitle files or their parts. Impact of the cleaning methods on the corpus quality will be evaluated quantitatively.

The realization of selected mathematical computations using graphical cards.
Schreiber, Petr ; Krejsa, Jiří (referee) ; Ondroušek, Vít (advisor)
This work discusses available approaches for programming graphic hardware as a platform for executing parallel calculations. Text of the work is focused on new OpenCL technology, which allows executing the same high level code for taking control of full potential of multicore CPUs and GPUs, without explicit bindings to hardware vendor or operating system. Author provides the reader with libraries and tools based on OpenCL, along with practical examples and own observations about the current state of mentioned technology.

The ways of enriching the Arabic lexicon with a special respect to journalistic style
Bielický, Viktor ; Zemánek, Petr (advisor) ; Oliverius, Jaroslav (referee)
The present study consists of two parts. The first, theoretical part focuses on brief and mostly lexical characteristics of the Arabic media language style (Chapter 2) and describes in outline all word-formational methods used in Modern Standard Arabic for lexical innovation, especially in the field of scientific and technical vocabulary (Chapter 3), i.e. derivation (ištiqq), lexical borrowing (tacrb), composition (nah t), semantic extension (maz), and translation (tarama). The second part (Chapter 4), based on a digitalized corpus of newspaper texts (Lebanese daily newspaper al-H ayt), deals in detail with word-formational, structural, syntactic, and semantic analysis of selected one-word, compound and multi-word lexical units (collocations) in Modern Standard Arabic. An Arabic-Czech dictionary of all lexical material treated in the text is attached to the study (Appendix).

Technological, economical and ecological aspects of high efficient cooling
Hort, Martin ; Peterka, Václav (referee) ; Píška, Miroslav (advisor)
The diploma thesis is aimed to the influence of the high-pressure and low-pressure coolant system according to the machining operation. The comparison was carried out with different types of materials and cutting tools using the main machining operations – turning, milling, and drilling. The study is focused on the chip and heat removal from the cutting zone, tools life and wear of the tools. A description of the basic principle of the high-pressure coolant system meant is described in this thesis. The economical analysis of the high-pressure compared to low-pressure system was determined in the last part of this work.

The Literary Works of G. Angiolini and J.-G. Noverre in the context of the 18th century
Dotlačilová, Petra ; KAZÁROVÁ, Helena (advisor) ; BRODSKÁ, Božena (referee)
This dissertation offers a commented translation into Czech language of works written by two most important choreographers of the 18th century, Italian Gasparo Angiolini and French Jean-Georges Noverre. It is a selection of their most important texts where they develop an inovative aesthetics of the dramatic ballet – ballet en action. An introductory chapter about theatre aesthetics of the first half of the 18th century is included in the beginning of the work where I summarize the most important discussions of the period and topics that inspired the choreographers to their reform in the art of dance. Futhermore, a chapter refering to the sources for this work is attached to each commented translation.

Joyce against theory
Vichnar, David ; Armand, Louis (advisor) ; Procházka, Martin (referee)
This work sets out to map the genealogy of a possible location of "Joyce" and "theory" in the present-day Joyce studies, and, equally important, to think of the meanings of the copulative conjunction and which separates/unites the two. The phenomenon of the contagious "Joyce and…" to be found in a plethora of book-, and even more so, paper-titles is significant in its own right, bespeaking as it does not so much a lack of imagination on the part of the scholarly community, as a central tendency of Joyce's writing, variously described as (all-) inclusiveness. Joyce's writing process, itself based on addition and expansion, produced texts whose semantic reference, more than in the case of any other writer, is extra-textual as much as intertextual, deferring its meaning to the lived experience of a specific historical reality no more than to other texts. This tendency, in turn, solicits a repetition in the response of Joyce's readership (from the project of textual annotation of the earliest to the complex genetic examinations of avant-textes of the contemporary Joycean scholarship), whether of the individual exegete, or- again, to a degree paralleled by no other writer-of a reading group. Joyce's texts, from the floating signifiers of "paralysis," "gnomon," and "simony" in the first paragraph of 'The Sisters'...

The noise of death: Raul Brandão's Humus and the problems of its translation into Slovak
Štubner, Juraj ; Voldřichová - Beránková, Eva (advisor) ; Grauová, Šárka (referee)
Raul Brando's Humus is incontestably one of the most important works of fiction in Portuguese literature of the beginning of the twentieth century and it brings a number of innovations on the formal as well as on the ideological level. The specificity due to these innovations makes it a book the translation of which represents very particular difficulties. The paper, based on a philological analysis of the novel, identifies these difficulties and searches for usable solutions, bringing a translation of selected parts of the book into Slovak. It is divided into three parts. The first is a brief presentation of the author's work and places him in the context of portuguese and european literature. The second analyses Humus with regard to the aspects of the novel which are crucial for the understanding necessary as a base for a translation attempt. The third part exposes the general conception of the translation and its theorical bases not omitting the explanation of the choice of tha parts of the text to be translated. Expected specific problems of the translation are presented as well as suggestions of possible solutions to these. Follows the translation itself, several encountered problems are subsequently analyzed and the choices of solutions reasoned and exemplified. The conclusion establishes a hierarchy...

The honeycomb of the jati bee: Iracema as a translation problem
Nesvedová, Kristina ; Housková, Anna (advisor) ; Dufková, Vlasta (referee)
The translation of Iracema represents difficulties on several different levels. To cope with these, it is first necessary to understand the multilayered complexity of Iracema as a work of fiction. That is why, after a brief summary of the plot, I addressed its genre, composition, the aspects of style and, above all, its language. Every work of fiction is obviously influenced by the historical and literary context and by the circumstnaces of its creation. It was therefore necessary to put Iracema into the context of Brazilian romantism and, more specifically, that of nationalist indianism. José de Alencar uses different mythological patterns creating his Iracema; in my analysis of the mythical aspect of Iracema I focused on the impact of these patterns on the formation of the imagery of the Brazilian nation. I attempted to apply the results of these partial studies on the only existing Czech translation of the book. Jarmila Vojtíšková and Jaroslav Vojtíšek translated Iracema in an elegant and easy-to-read style, which, however, ignored some of the crucial aspects, thus making the translation only partially successful. They made every effort to make the story readable without difficulties of comprehension and they took great care to make the Brazilian wildlife, its animals and plants, accessible to the Czech...
