Doubková, Monika ; Stellner, František (advisor) ; Kovář, Martin (referee)
I want to start my Bachelor thesis by studying of peace attempts running before USA entry in the war; by reviewing in facts USA neutrality and by inspecting USA part in these attempts and why peace negotiations came to grief. I also want to analyze the influence of President Woodrow Wilson on foreign policy within the context of peace attempts and then to outline political and economic reasons for the entry in World War I. Further I want to attend to diplomatic negotiations between United States and Austria-Hungary. I will answer the question why the attempts took place at secret negotiations of separate peace with Austria-Hungary. I will also analyze so-called 14 points of President Wilson and I will sum up its meaning for politic and economic development in the Europe. Then I will state the reasons for the turn in USA politics in the spring 1918 when the effort to conclude separate peace with Austria-Hungary were left and American support for Succession State creation was shown. My thesis is based on non-published and published sources (Archiv Ministerstva zahraničních věcí - Archive of State Department) and Czech and foreign special literature.

Animals in the looking glasses of Europe and India. The changing bonds between humans and animals in the course of the 19th and 20th century
Nováková, Hana ; Komárek, Stanislav (advisor) ; Marková, Dagmar (referee) ; Cílek, Václav (referee)
This paper deals with various aspects of human- animal relationship: biological, psychological and sociological; but also with the fact how deep and thorough impact can political events have on the paradigma pointed towards animals. Here, these are depicted on significant fields of human - animal interactions of modern times, for example zoological gardens, petkeeping, changing ways of hunting, and also within some more obscure phenomena, such as animal abuse in laboratory research and in "meat plants". I also try to trace the roots of the approach that people of modern time Europe perform towards animals, and I do the same for India. The writing is divided into two parts, each one containing four chapters. The part No. I. - The man and the animal in Euro-American cultural context - describes the turbulent changes the human - animal relationship underwent during the era of Enlightenment, and tries to explain why it was so. Animals have enjoyed a widespread interest since times immemorial, but have hardly ever been perceived from the tabula rasa point of view. On the contrary, they have often been seen through the prisma of human sociology, serving as the immense field of manifold human projections. As such, they have figured in copious kinds of modern "myths", being it myths of ritual or otherwise "fictive"...

The role of mountain ethnic groups in the social development of Laos
Nožina, Miroslav ; Vrhel, František (advisor) ; Pargač, Jan (referee) ; Hubinger, Václav (referee)
The study deals with the problem of relations between ethnic minorities and central governments in Laos. It analyses mechanisms of the mountaineers' social and military mobilisation in historical perspective from the beginnings of the French colonial administration until the present. The main discussed topics are: the ethnic situation in Laos, ethnic relations, and the Lao government's ethnic policy. The Lao People's Democratic Republic (LPDR) is an ethnically complicated and weakly researched territory. Ethnic minorities comprise approximately 70 % of the total population of the country. This makes Laos one of the most ethnically diverse countries in Asia. Although the Lao government claims 49 ethnic groups, recent anthropological surveys revealed 236 ethnic groups belonging to four ethno-linguistic families: Tai-Kadai, Austro-Asiatic (Mon-Khmer), Hmong-Mien (Miao-Yao) and Sino-Tibetan (Tibeto- Burman). Many of the minorities inhabit rural areas, which are amongst the most poverty stricken areas in the country. The high degree of ethnic diversity, coupled with the high percentage of the total population belonging to national minorities, has an important impact on the social and political situation in Laos. Minorities have been playing specific (frequently decisive) roles in the life of the country. In the...
