Sibling relationships in a family raising a child with autism spectrum disorders
Rathousová, Linda ; Zemková, Jaroslava (advisor) ; Hádková, Kateřina (referee)
Sibling relationships represent the first and the longest contact with contemporaries in our lives, changing with the age of siblings and depending on a number of circumstances. At the same time it is the second strongest emotional bond, right after the bond to one's parents. One of the circumstances, influencing the sibling relationship essentially and permanently, is an impairment of one of the siblings, which may also be an autism spectrum disorder. This developmental disorder affects the psychological development of individual in three main fields, the so-called autistic triad - in the fields of communication, social interaction and imagination, i.e. it effects the sibling relationship as well. The sibling of the child with an autism spectrum disorder may then develop feelings as jealousy, guilt, fear, wrong, anger, grief, excess responsibility, shame or loneliness. There are not negative emotions only, the sibling may be proud of the child with the autism spectrum disorder, he/she may feel love and sympathy and he/she may feel the need to protect the impaired sibling, thus learning important character traits as patience or tolerance.
The attitude and the role of siblings of children with strong mental handicaps in a family.
TŮMOVÁ, Gabriela
This dissertation is focused onthe role of siblings of children with severe health disability and the position they take within a family. The main objective was to find out what role and position healthy children and their siblings with disability take with each other. I decided to focus my main research questionon "If & howthe role and position of a healthy sibling towards a sibling with a severe health disabilitytransformed during adolescence". The theoretical part of the dissertation focuses on the family, its function, upbringing styles and types of contemporary families. Furthermore I also focused on health disability. I defined a physical and mental disability, identified the difference between congenital disability and disability gained during life. I also looked in depth into cerebral palsy. Apart from this disability I also briefly looked into neuromuscular and other muscular diseases and orthopaedic disability. The next part of my theoretical study concerned a family with a disabled child. Here I focused on the very important process of coming to terms with the birth of a child with disability as described by well-known Swiss- American doctor Elisabeth Kübler-Ross. Last but not least I looked at siblings of a child with a disability, their inter-relationship withthe disabled child and how the child copes with their impairment. Considering the number of respondents and openness of the questions I have opted for qualitative research. This consisted of eight respondents whom I know personally and were willing to participate in my research. Data collection took place by means of prepared questionnaires that I sent by e-mail. All respondents were made aware ofthe topic of my dissertation, its objective, research question and that anonymity would be provided on the information given in questionnaires about which some of them had inquired. I opted for questionnaires because some of the respondents were currently overseasor due to various other reasons were not able to meet in person. I asked open questions hence, without the option of choosing an answer. That way the respondents had completely unrestricted opportunity to express their opinion. This dissertation could be beneficial to the siblings of children with a severe health disability themselves who could see this issue from theperspective of other siblings. It could also help parents of children with a health disability to realise how this issue is perceived by a healthy sibling.
The attitude and the role of siblings of children with strong handicaps in family
BERGEROVÁ, Denisa
Family, a basic and irreplaceable institution presents above all an emotional environment, a sense of security, love and safety not only for a child but also for other family members. A child creates close relationships within the family not only with their parents but also with siblings. A relationship between siblings offers an emotional support, an opportunity to share both joys and worries but also cooperation and conspiracy against parents. Siblings can offer help in difficult times in life, on the other hand conflicts may arise between siblings and rivalry and jealousy appears. The birth of a child with a severe disability presents an enormous challenge for the parents but the effects of this situation on siblings have not yet been sufficiently described. This sibling relationship can be more emotional, has its specifics and unmistakable quality. This bachelor thesis is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The first chapter focuses on family its functions, educational styles and current family trends. The second chapter is focused on disabilities, which are further divided into basic types, such as bodily, sensory, mental and combined. In the third chapter we focus more on a family with a heavily disabled child and we devote the last chapter to siblings, especially to those with a disabled sibling. The practical part aims to describe the situation of siblings of children with a severe disability and to find positive aspects of the situation. I also tried to find out what demands does the family put on these siblings and if these siblings show tendencies to pro-social behavior , especially in the area of interests, education and career. The practical part was done using qualitative research, namely the method of questioning. The technique used was a semi-constructed interview. The experimental research was conducted in April 2015. The selective sample included two groups of respondents. In the first group there were siblings of people with severe health disability; in the second were siblings of people who were intact, meaning a sample of common population. The results of the experimental part follow after every round of respondents' answers. It is clear from the results that siblings of people with severe disability have the same duties in the household as the siblings of the intact ones. However, higher demands are put on them, when it comes to taking care of their sibling. None of the respondents thinks that they would have had less duties had their sibling been healthy. The results of the research showed that siblings of people with severe disability have higher predispositions for such personality traits that increase the tendency to pro-social behavior. They display empathy, a sense of social awareness, they also "feel protective" of their sibling and they feel selfless and patient. The interests and hobbies of siblings of children with a severe disability do not differ from interests of siblings of children without it. It is the siblings of children with a severe disability, however, who spend their free time with their sibling. They also more often work as volunteers. This thesis could be most useful for parents and siblings of people with a severe disability, because it can help them find a different perspective on the matter it will be a feedback of a sort. The thesis can also be used by students, who are preparing to work in helping professions, because it will help them orient in the matter. It could also be used by people who work in helping professions. Last but not least, it could be used to create material concerned with this matter.
The life of the sibling of an autistic child in family
KOŘÍNKOVÁ, Jana
The sibling relationship represents a very important feature of man's life and the experience gained from it is irreplaceable. Relationships between siblings are influenced by many factors: age, gender of the children, age difference or a handicap of one of them. This thesis deals with the subject of the influence of an autistic child on their sibling. Two research questions were determined: Do parents perceive any difference between their approaches to the healthy and the autistic child? What does the healthy sibling view as negatives and positives of living together with an autistic sibling? The thesis consists of two parts, a theoretical and a practical one. The theoretical part comprises two main chapters. The first chapter discusses the autism itself; it presents the basic definition of autism, the diagnostic possibilities, the most common signs, and a brief description of particular forms of autism spectre disorder (ASD). The second chapter focuses on the family of the child with ASD, principally on his/her sibling the definition of the term family, parenting styles in family, parents and siblings of autistic child, birth order, jealousy and rivalry. The theoretical part of the thesis is based on scholarly sources mainly from the fields of special needs education and psychology. The practical part concentrates on the research. The qualitative research method was selected for this part, namely the narrative conversation. The conversations were held with parents and siblings of autistic individuals. Besides, the thesis is supplemented with appendices that consist not only of wordto- word transcriptions of the conversations and the informed consent template but also of some additions to the theoretical part.
