Dominance Strategies in Romantic Couples' Interactions
Průšová, Denisa ; Weiss, Petr (advisor) ; Procházka, Ivo (referee) ; Poláčková Šolcová, Iva (referee)
This doctoral thesis combines three major topics of how Romantic Couples verbally and nonverbally Communicate Dominance. We research their behavioral dynamics from Evolutionary and Communication perspectives. Against current psycho-social scientific theories, we do suggest that people that are stereotypically seen as submissive, those using other than direct, active, and aggressive strategies, can achieve their will as well. They simply use behaviors that researchers do not consider as dominant (powerful) behaviors and look for them. We explore the whole spectrum of dominance strategies and their context of where, when, and how they are used. We chose a highly qualitative approach during the data collection and analysis part. We adapted a psychotherapy method for research purposes, our Relationship Drama, to overcome significant limitations that nonverbal and communication research struggles with. Therefore, we could see and further qualitatively analyze real couple's behavior in their real typically appearing conflict interaction. Those are described in the theoretical part of this thesis, in chapter 1. Findings from yet unpublished studies that were presented at conferences and are relevant to specific topics are included as well as one case study illustrating dominance ascription complexity. Fišerová, Anna ; Lindová, Jitka (advisor) ; Bártová, Klára (referee)
Constructive management of relationship conflicts, which may be conditioned by the interaction of both romantic partners, is a key factor for mutual satisfaction. Therefore, the main aim of this thesis was to find out a mediating role of conflict communication styles in long-term heterosexual couples. For the Practical part of the thesis was chosen a quantitative research, including data from 76 long-term heterosexual couples between 18 - 40 years of age. Attachment dimensions were measured by The Close Relationship Experience - Revised (ECR-R-16), relationship adjustment by The Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS), and six conflict communication styles (compromising, dominant, separating, submissive, avoidant and reactive) by The Romantic Partner Conflict Scale (RPCS). The effect of conflict communication styles as mediators seems to be predicted by attachment and gender. In men, the mediating function of communication styles between attachment and relationship adjustment was confirmed for reactive and avoidant style, in women for reactive and compromising. The mediating effect of communication styles was not significant for partners' relationship adjustment. Key words: attachment, romantic relationships, communication styles, conflict communication

Křišťanová, Lenka ; Šulová, Lenka (advisor) ; Štětovská, Iva (referee)
Sensitivity to rejection is a tendency to anxiously or angrily expect, readily perceive, and then overreact to rejection in interpersonal relationships (Downey & Feldman, 1996). This thesis examined the potential associations between rejection sensitivity and romantic relationships in an adult population. I hypothesized that rejection sensitivity will negatively influence perceived quality of romantic relationship, including these relational factors: viability, intimacy, passion, care, satisfaction, conflict, maintenance and commitment. In the research participated 296 respondents (i.e. 148 couples), which individually completed Sensitivity to rejection scale and Relationship rating form (both measures used in Czech translation). On the basis of individual analysis of all respondents (i.e. the whole sample) were found most significant negative correlations with the viability factor and care factor. Furthermore, also the low negative correlation between sensitivity to rejection and satisfaction and commitment factors. At the level of couples were not confirmed either one statistically significant result. Although hypothesis about the influence of sensitivity to rejection on the romantic relationship were confirmed only at the individuals, and not at the individual couples, this study suggest the...

Attachment and communication in romantic relationships
MARELOVÁ, Anna
This thesis deals with the attachment and communication in romantic relationships. First, there are defined basic theoretical grounds of attachment in childhood, adulthood and romantic relationships. The work also specifies the romantic relationship and the communication in a romantic relationship and its division into four communication styles - assertive, passive, manipulative and aggressive. For the practical part there was chosen a quantitative research, whose main objective was to determine the relation between dimensions of attachment and communication styles in romantic relationships. The work also examined whether the communication styles differ according to the type of attachment. It was also researched whether there is a link between the lenght of relationship and the dimensions of attachment. The research sample consisted of data from 333 respondents. There were used two questionnaires - "ECR-R" for detecting the attachment of an individual and "Questionnaire of 4 styles of communication in romantic relationships." Attachment is made up of two dimensions - anxiety and avoidance. It was found out that with decreasing levels of anxiety and avoidance individuals use a more assertive style of communication. Conversely, those with higher levels of anxiety and avoidance, often prefer negative communication strategies (either passive, aggressive or manipulative). Further, it was discovered that depending on what attachment individuals have, they use different styles of communication. The research also showed that there is no significant connection between the dimensions of attachment and the length of relationship.
