English as a Lingua Franca in IT Advertising Campaigns

Ve 21. století můžeme s jistotou hovořit o významném počtu lidí, kteří používají angličtinu, ať už v každodenní komunikaci, nebo se ji intenzivně učí. Angličtina se stala světovým jazykem vědy, techniky, vzdělávání a podnikání a jako hlavní komunikační nastroj obdržela status Lingua Franca (ELF). Anglický jazyk využívají představitelé různých kultur, a proto se angličtina vyvinula na úroveň nadnárodního jazyka, který propojil vlastnosti různých jazyků a kultur. Ačkoli je výzkum v oblasti ELF stále ještě v počáteční fázi vývoje, pokusím se v této semestrální práci o identifikaci jeho specifických rysů, a to v reklamních kampaních v IT sektoru s využitím tiskových zpráv od předních světových IT společností.
English as a Lingua Franca in the Context of the Czech Educational System

Despite the predominance of English used by non-native speakers in international communication, the approach to teaching this language is still centred on the notion of acquiring English for the purpose of communication with native speakers. This thesis argues for acknowledgement of English as a lingua franca in the approach to teaching English. It also stresses the necessity of further investigations into the global use of English to better understand this phenomenon. A questionnaire was conducted with ten English teachers to see their opinions about some of the key issues of English as a lingua franca (for instance the concept of nativeness, the role of a teacher and the understanding of an error). As a result, it was found that despite some slow changes in individual opinions, the traditional view on teaching English is still prevalent. Both the theoretical research and the analysis of the questionnaire stress the need of implementing the concept of English as a lingua franca into teaching English as it is necessary to prepare students for the reality of global use of this language. Comparison of ELT methods used in a bilingual preschool and a language preschool

This bachelor thesis is aimed at comparing ELT methods based on analysis of observed lessons in a bilingual and language preschool, which focus on teaching English. The theoretical part describes eight teaching methods generally used in the teaching process and characterizes their main principles. The explanation of terms method, approach, technique and principle is included in this part as well. The practical part contains description of individual observed lessons and analyses the application of ELT methods put in practice. The outcomes of the study are based on frequency of accurence of the teaching methods. Further, the results of observations in both preschools are subjected to mutual comparison.
Cooperation of a Czech Teacher With an English Native Speaker Teacher in a Bilingual School

The diploma thesis concentrates on characteristics of cooperation between czech and english speaking teachers in bilingual classes. The aim of this thesis is to explore the cooperation at elementary school and to find out the advantages and disadvantages of the collaboration between the two. The theoretical part of this work is based on the literature and it summarizes the main characteristic of this problém. The practical part is an outcome of the qualitative research. Case study focuses on detailed describtion of the bilingual programme backround gained by the author's personal experience. The choosen methods of the reaserch are intviews with bilingual programme teachers and observations of a native speaking teacher. The outcome of the thesis is analysis of data gained from the intrview and observing. On the based of the action research the thesis states the recommendations to rise the efectivity of the bilingual teacher's collaboration. To the Position and Role of the Normative Authority in the Internet Forums. An Analysis of the Corrections in the Context of the Language Management Theory.

My thesis deals with the status of German language standard and is based on research in the internet discussion sites (internet forums), that deal with the topic of language. The internet forums that I've chosen offer help in learning a foreign language, in our case German. The help is provided either by proofreading or by answering the specific questions. This thesis is based on Ulrich Ammon's model of four social forces and the theory of language management. Next to the instances, which according to Ammon determine the standard, I included the participants of discussion, who decide what is standard too and thereby affect those for whom isn't German the native language. The analysis will be carried out on the basis of the proofreading of model texts. With the help of the language management theory I will discuss with the proofreader in the comments their selected (or not selected) option. The aim of my work is to observe the behavior of normative authority in relation to the codified norm, whether they know and follow it. Furthermore, I am interested in the social background and language abilities of the participants, which I'll find out by using the questionnaires.

A Native Speaker as an EFL Teacher Rodilý mluvčí jako učitel angličtiny Miroslav Ledvinka Abstract Introduction: The principal aim of this thesis is to determine the role and significance of native speaker teachers of English in the teaching process, as well as to define the expectations of their students and employers. The status of native speaker teachers in the Czech Republic is being contrasted to the position of non-native speaker teachers. The core of this study lies in the analytical part which attempts to delimit the characteristics of the implementation of native English-speaker teachers into the Czech education system. Theoretical part: The theoretical chapter presents a concise summary of the theoretical terms and concepts, both historical and contemporary, which are related to the topic of native English-speaker teachers. Language management in the process of reception of literary texts from the perspective of a native and a non-native speaker of the Czech language

This diploma thesis explores the possibility of mapping the reception of a literary text in terms of language management processes and in succession unveils the main differences in the perception of a literary text by a native opposed to a non-native speaker. The first three chapters treat the research methodology, which is based on Language Management Theory, Neustupný's approach to literary criticism through this concrete theory and single elements from formalism and structuralism. The research, which is described in chapters four to seven, focuses on the different moments of noting, evaluation and problem solving strategies realised by two readers of a modern Czech short story (one native and one non-native speaker). These processes are identified and analysed by the means of follow-up interviews. The aim of the thesis is to establish a complex methodology of identifying, describing and interpreting management processes which occur during the reception of a literary text and further to investigate the main characteristics that distinguish this process in the case of a native and a non-native recipient of the text.
