Determining the influence on trust in society in West and East Germany: historical institutional differences, shock of reunification, or shock of the aftermath?
Montanaro, Magdalena ; Semerák, Vilém (advisor) ; Jeřábek, Martin (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to determine the strongest factor influencing the difference in trust levels in East and West Germany, and to explore the extent of influence institutions have on societal values using Germany as a natural experiment. The three main factors which literature hypothesize include historical institutional differences, shock of reunification, and shock of the aftermath of reunification. The common belief following reunification of Germany is that Communism affected East Germany's values including trust, while the other two hypotheses grew in popularity in more recent years. The objective of this thesis is fulfilled through the survey of relevant literature on trust in Germany, finding that the shock of the aftermath of unification is the strongest explanation for lower trust levels in Germany. Key Words: reunification, Germany, trust

The Phenomenon of Ostalgie in the New German Federal States
Vágnerová, Vendula ; Šafařík, Petr (advisor) ; Handl, Vladimír (referee)
This thesis deals with the phenomenon of ostalgie in the new federal states of FRG. This is a specific form of nostalgia for everyday life in the GDR, which became a basis for a retro style, later expanded into many areas of everyday life in Germany. To understand this nostalgia it is necessary to take it into context with the issues that the residents of the new federal states in Germany had to face. Ostalgie was a result of disappointment with the situation in early 90's, and therefore this paper firstly discusses the troubled process of German reunification. The central point of interest of this thesis are the different forms of ostalgie: so-called Ostalgie-Partys, the return of old East German products, Ostalgie on the Internet, its role in German film, so-called Ostalgie-Shows and another forms. The aim is to show that Ostalgie focuses on the culture and the everyday life of the GDR, and does not desire to return its regime. The work also points out the problem of differences between East and West Germans and depicts Ostalgie as a phenomenon that could be a support to German unification, rather than an obstruction.

Economic Development of German Federal States in Regard to their Labor Market in 1990-2010
Parkan, Hubert ; Szobi, Pavel (advisor) ; Prokop, Jaromír (referee)
The ongoing debate around a successful reunification process is dividing Germany, not only geographically but also socio-economically and politically. There have been some remarkable achievements during the reunification, especially during the first years, but the period 1990-2012 has also seen some negative developments. Analysis is based mainly on databases from the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP), as well as other administrative data sources such as the Deutsche Institut for Wirtschaft (DIW). In examining and comparing the roles of demographic changes, productivity, the implementation of active labor market policies (ALMPs), labor participation, unemployment, education, the gender gap, and wage inequality, we analyze the development of the german labor market by its main determinants, in order to conclude whether the German government has succeeded in the reunification of East and West Germany.
