The Way of St. James: Modern Pilgrims and their Relationship to Nature
Hroudová, Jolana ; Mašek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Skripnik, Ondřej (referee)
This master's thesis deals with the phenomenon of pilgrimage, focusing on the Way of Saint James to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Due to its qualitative nature, the thesis seeks to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of people who embark on the now very popular pilgrimage. Using sensitive data collection methods of qualitative observation, informal interviews and two rounds of semi- structured interviews with pilgrims during and one month after completing the Way of Saint James, it explores how modern pilgrims perceive society and nature, what changes the pilgrimage inspires them to make, and what impact it has on their subsequent return to ordinary life. This thesis does not address the phenomenon of pilgrimage as a spiritual activity. It focuses primarily on the relationship between people and nature, which distinguishes it from other theses with similar focus. Furthermore, the thesis offers a multidisciplinary perspective and combines the approaches of sociology, anthropology and environmental aesthetics. Understanding the way pilgrims on their journey think about the landscapes they pass through, how they perceive time, space, themselves, and how they reflect on the journey in hindsight, can contribute to deepening our understanding of the phenomenon of pilgrimage and wandering in...
Francouzské poutní místo Taizé: motivy a postoje českých turistů
Solaříková, Kristýna
This diploma thesis focuses on the motives and attitudes of tourists approaching pilgrimage destinations. It is aimed to find out what are the primary motives of the tourists approaching French pilgrimage site Taizé which is located in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. Moreover, it is intended to identify if (and how) the tourists’ attitudes have changed after they visited the pilgrimage site. The theoretical part is devoted to religious tourism with its focus on pilgrimages within the context of Europe. It is captured there how the importance and meaning of pilgrimage has been changing throughout the history. Likewise, the contemporary forms of pilgrimage tourism are recognized there. The attention is paid to motives and attitudes of contemporary pilgrims in contrast to the prototype of the pilgrim from the earlier times. Subsequently, the Taizé pilgrimage site, including its specifics, is introduced, and characterized there. Within the practical part, based on twenty semi-structured interviews which were held during the fieldwork, primary data are qualitatively analyzed in order to identify tourists’ motives and their attitudes. The results of a conducted research show that the main motive why tourist approach Taizé was not linked to religious motives but rather curiosity and desire to discover something new. The initiative to visit Taizé often came from another person (friend, acquaintance, or family member) who invited the interviewee to Taizé. Attending the program in Taizé did not cause a revision of the value system in the majority of cases, rather it strengthened already established values. All visitors agreed that Taizé positively influenced interpersonal relationships and attitudes towards different churches as well as religions because obtained experience led individuals to reconciliation and greater tolerance. These conclusions correspond with the main idea of the founder of the pilgrimage site, Roger Schütz.

History of Římov pilgrimage site
ŠRUBAŘ, Štěpán
The thesis describes the history of the foundation of pilgrimage site Římov in southern Bohemia in the 17th century that could be build thanks to a donation of the local farm to the Jesuit College in Krumlov. The most significant proponents were a Capuchin monk Alex and a Jesuit lay brother John Gurre. The area consists of a chapel built in close resemblance to the Italian model of Holy House in Loreto and a Way of Sorrows designed as a copy of the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem. The work shows the significance of sacred architecture in the life of Christians in the 17th century. The role of fraternities and Marian spirituality in traditional piety of Catholics of that period is also mentioned. Based on the regular annual reports sent by every Jesuit College, unusual events accompanying the first decades of the shrine as well as the economic issues of the Jesuit residence are described.

The Mountain of the Mother of God will be treated as a "sacrum locum", reminiscent of the Holy Land from which came objects of this work.
Koclířov by Svitavy: pilgrimage place of (inter)national importance in a secularized state
Jančík, Jiří ; Havlíček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kučera, Zdeněk (referee)
In the masters dissertation Koclířov by Svitavy, a place of Marian pilgrimage, is presented as a lively seat of the Czech-Moravian Fatima, the national centre of Fatima Apostolate in the Czech Republic, a unique phenomenon within the universal Catholic Church. The centre of pilgrimage was established in 1995, hence it is relatively new. Pilgrims from all over Czechia as well as foreign pilgrims come here to enjoy its unique spiritual atmosphere. The centre offers a wide range of services including a traditional monastic cake shop and Shepherd shop offering devotional articles. Spiritual seminars held here once a month, every first Saturday, are particularly popular among the pilgrims. Serene monastery complex offers many sights and invites to quiescence. A Holy Gate opened by Mons. Jan Vokál, bishop of Hradec Králové diocese, in April 2016 in the frame of the Holy Year of Mercy is yet another unique feature of the place of pilgrim. Thus Koclířov has become one of the important church centres as this privilege is usually given only to cathedrals and minsters of particular dioceses. The Czech-Moravian Fatima in Koclířov will coordinate a wide range of festivities to celebrate the 100th anniversary of apparition the Virgin Mary in Fatima in Portugal in 2017. Number of Czech dioceses and their parishes...
