Women's Participation in the Labour Market as the Agenda of the European Commission

This bachelor's thesis is dedicated to the topic of agenda-setting of the European Commission. The studied agenda is the women's participation in the labour market. The primary purpose of this bachelor's thesis is to make clear what are the tools of the European Commission used for agenda-setting and what is the current situation regarding women's participation in the labour market. Both topics are connected in the research part of this thesis which examines how the European Commission set the agenda in the field of women's participation in the labour market and how was this topic framed. This thesis uses theoretical assumptions implied from the new institutionalism and there are two hypotheses introduced in this thesis. The first one stems from the racional institutionalism, the second one originates in sociologist institutionalism. This bachelor's thesis contributes to debates on the status and agenda-setting capabilities of the European Commission. The thesis also describes the issues connected to women's labour market participation in the EU and how these issues are addressed by the European Commission. The outcomes of this thesis revealed that the European Commission used both normative and economic frames for setting the agenda of women's participation in the labour market.

Context of agenda-setting in the context of Czech media studies

This dissertation thesis follows from a wide stream of considerations of the relationship between the mass media, public and politics; in particular detail, it deals with a specific concept which attempts to grasp, model and empirically examine this relationship. The main goals of the thesis can be in short divided into two interrelated areas. The first aim is to introduce the concept of agenda setting to the Czech academic environment, with its theoretical, terminological and research frame for an analysis of relationships between the mass media content, dynamics of public opinion, and the political sphere. The second aim is to analyze how agenda setting processes are theoretically grounded and studied in the Czech social studies. The theoretical part of the thesis is structured according to two perspectives: diachronic and synchronic. In the diachronic perspective, I try to grasp the social context and historical origins of agenda-setting as a concept, its development, main trends, and developmental lines. This way, I move forward to the synchronic perspective and describe academic grounding of agenda-setting; I give a detailed analysis of the present level of the agenda-setting research and the main research areas through available classifications. Agenda-setting at the Local Level

The rigorous thesis named Agenda-setting at the Local Level deals with concept agenda-setting and applies it on the research made in local conditions. It is checked to what degree the process of agenda-setting is functional on this level and how in the concrete it expresses oneself. At the same time follows up-to-date trend of research in agenda-setting being characterized by displacement from macro structural level to micro structural level and by replacement of general hypotheses to concrete hypotheses. The rigorous thesis describes relationships among citizens of Nové Město na Moravě including integrated villages as representatives of local public agenda, toll-free fortnightly Novoměstsko that belongs to local media agenda and municipal politicians as representatives of local political agenda. It is based on groundbreaking studies that checked the validity of agenda-setting on the macro structural level and it is used quantitative and qualitative methods that propped oneself upon that studies. The way of fortnightly publishing and the town government were changed in the period between the first and the second research. Therefore, the rigorous thesis also analyzes impact of these changes on the process of agenda-setting.

Temporary Intermedia Relations and Agenda-Setting: Covering of the Purchase of One-Crown Bonds Issued by Agrofert by its Owner Andrej Babiš

The diploma thesis deals with intermedia relations and agenda-setting in the case of the purchase of one-crown bonds of the company Agrofert by its owner Andrej Babiš. The news story took place in the first half of 2017 and its research was ended on the date of filing of a motion to remove Andrej Babiš from the position of Minister of Finance in the then government of Bohuslav Sobotka. The subject of quantitative analysis of media content is the determination of the influence in intermedia relations, the development of the story coverage over time and the degree of use of links to social networks in news articles. The case study then uses the grounded theory method to identify the variables that represented the media inputs, political context, and political outputs that occurred during the development of the story, and also to look for relationships between the phenomena observed. The work is based on the theory of agenda-setting and a model of contingency of the mass media's political agenda-setting power. The thesis is divided into four parts. The first chapter contains a summary of theoretical concepts and results of empirical studies related to the media agenda building and agenda- setting and the relationship between the media and political agenda. Media reflection of the president Václav Klaus' political agenda

Presidents are said to exert their influence mainly through addressing the public and public speaking. Setting the media agenda is considered as one of the presidents' main strategic powers. Although the contemporary Czech president Václav Klaus enjoys substantial media attention, it is not granted that the media report on everything he says and emphasises. This research focuses on the interaction between presidential speeches at important occasions, represented by the 1 January, 28 October, and 17 November address, and the media represented by three nation-wide dailies Mladá fronta DNES, Právo and Blesk. The time span of the research is 2007 to 2011. The analysis seeks to examine how often were the presidential speeches reported by the media, and which particular topics from them generated press coverage. The results show that the media were mostly attracted by the 1 January address, while the 17 November speech received least attention. It has also emerged that the media reporters have been choosing selectively which topics from the speeches to cover. The scope of the space dedicated to each of the topics by the president in his speeches has not been reflected by the journalists.
