Dialects of English in computer games

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou anglických dialektů, které se objevují ve videohrách. Jejím cílem je analyzovat použití různých dialektů v sérii her Grand Theft Auto. Teoretická část je zaměřena na poskytnutí potřebných konceptů souvisejících se sociolingvistikou, rozmanitostí jazyka, dialekty, akcenty a herním průmyslem. Praktická část je zaměřena na jazykovou analýzu anglických dialektů, které se objevují v sérii her GTA. Tato analýza identifikuje dialekty postav ve hře z gramatické a fonetické perspektivy a vysvětluje důvody, které vedly tvůrce hry k výběru těchto dialektů.

Vowel lenght: Comparison of Czech and French Vowel Systems from the Phonetic and Phonological Point of View. A Pedagogically Focused Contrastive Study

Philippe MARTIN The thesis, one of the French-Czech contrastive studies, deals with the issue of vowel length in Czech and French language. The first part of the thesis, which was intentionally written for a potential pedagogic use, introduces the comparison of the main phonetic and phonological characteristics of both languages, their typology considering vowels length and its development through the history of these languages. The second part, experimental, brings the description and results of several attempts which observe whether the French native speakers learning Czech respect the length of Czech vowels, further the influence of following consonants, final and initial stress and also the type of a syllable on the length of French vowels, both in the production of French native speakers and Czech native speakers learning French. The results prove that articulatory habits which both groups of speakers use in their mother tongue have a significant influence on the production of the acquired language. In...

The Issue of Rhythmic Groups in Spoken French

The study is concerned with the division of the French speech into rhythmic groups. The first part attempts to outline the theoretical background of the issue. The thesis is concerned with terms such as rhythmic groups, the French accent and the comparison between the French and the Czech phonetic system. The aim of the practical part of this paper is to find out to what extent Czech students of French at the Faculty of Education are able to use the phenomenon spontaneously in their speech with regard to the complete difference between the phonological rules of both languages. For reaching the aim of the paper several methodological procedures are employed. The first part which is concerned with theory books of both languages allows forming the hypothesis. Subsequently, the hypothesis is verified in quality-based research which examines the production of speech by Czech students. To analyze correctly the tested speech produced by Czech students, a comparison with speech recorded by French native speakers is used. Comparison of English and Russian phonetic system

ANNOTATION: The thesis is exclusively allocated to a contrastive analysis of phonetic systems of English and Russian language. The given text is divided into two parts: the first one focuses on the theoretical description of main phonetic phenomena, that are characteristic for the languages; and the second one concentrates on the comparison of two languages based on the previously described features. The first chapter of this thesis is dedicated to individual phonemes - vowels, consonants and aspects of connected speech such as assimilation, assibilation, and elision. The second chapter focuses on prosodic features of the languages such as a syllable, stress, vowel reduction, syntagmatic division, and intonation. The following practical part wholly mirrors the structure of the theoretical part, which enables the contrastive analysis to be more transparent. The main aspiration of the thesis is to discover differences and similarities in phonetics and phonology between the two languages. The particular endeavor of this work was not only to list the differences between languages but also to unearth plausible errors and its causes while learning these languages as foreign.

KEY WORDS : Prosody, metrics, stress, intonation, declamation, rap, reggae This thesis deals with the rhythm, stress and intonation in rap and reggae music. It describes the form features of declamations which combine chant, half- singing and singing, in the theoretical framework of contrastive prosody and verse theory. The thesis consists of seven chapters and is based on a textual corpus of 200 songs in French and Czech, assembled for this dissertation. The linguistic material of 59,000 syllables is a representative set of excerpts, transcribed in rhythmic grids with an auditive analysis. From the prosodic point of view, rap and reggae display an important degree of rhythmic reorganisation. In both languages, setting texts to music is performed ac- cording to an isochronous pattern, which is imposed on the lyrics with an isosyllabic rhythm and whose bound stress system is weak. Commonly Mispronounced English Words by Czech Speakers

The first chapters of this thesis describe the process of collecting mispronounced words in English, first by searching through various sources including course books, didactic manuals and teachers' books; and second by attending English lessons at various schools and listening to Czech students' production of English. The collected data were classified according to the cause of observed mispronunciations. The established categories were analysed and commented from the phonetic point of view. The practical part further contains a small-scale research carried out among university students of the English language in which their reading was recorded and evaluated in relation to the examined phenomenon.
