RSDr. Václav Jakl (1924 - 1985), journalist; edition of diary entries and correspondence

This bachelor's dissertation is an attempt at an edition of the correspondence of one of many people who during World War II were in forced labour. The chosen person was RSDr. Václav Jakl. The chosen correspondence for this dissertation is between the years 1944 and 1945 which was kept in the Personal Collection of RSDr. Václav Jakl (1938-1985) and stored in State Regional Archive in Pilsen. The correspondence consists of a letter that he used to exchange with his family and friends. The letters describe both the everyday life of people in forced labour as well as the life of people in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. The first chapter of this dissertation is dedicated to the methodology used in the dissertation, the method of oral history, resources and literature. For the purpose of the dissertation, it was vital to focus on correspondence as a historical recourse to highlight the possible complications and issues that the researcher could encounter during their research. The next chapter is explaining to the reader the concept of forced labour, its development and the organisational structure in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. As the reader needs to understand the organisational structure of forced labour, the fourth chapter is dedicated to the role of the Office of Labour. Because the foundation of personal correspondence is tightly connected to the day to day lives of the people correspondents, this dissertation must include a chapters about the everyday life of people in forced labour in the Third Reich and the development of the Staňkov Region in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia where the family of Vaclav Jakl lived. The next few chapters are devoted to Vaclav Jakl himself, his life before and during forced labour, and his close and distant family with who he wrote the correspondence. At the end of the dissertation, the reader will find the list of abbreviations and bibliography. The attachments include a note of edition, edited texts of used correspondence, an index of names and locations, a sample of contemporary literary work of Václav Jakl and a pictorial appendix.

Social legislation in Czech lands in the years 1918 - 1948 Abstract The dissertation deals with the theme of social legislation in the period of 1918-1948. i.e. during the so called First, Second and Third Czechoslovak republic. However, the foundations of the Czechoslovak laws in this area lays in the period of Austrian laws, especially from the second half of the 19.th century. Development of social legislation was directly conected with the existence of a legal regulation of modern municipal self-government and higher levels of self-government. Two very important acts were adopted in this respect: Act No. 18/1862 The empire's code implemented on 5th March 1862 "The Act on Municipal matters" and on 3rd December 1863 Act. No. 105/1863 The empire's code "The act about Domestic rights". For poor relief the "The Poverty act" (Act No. 59/1868 The provincial code) was enacted on 3rd December 1868. Based on the social policies of "stick and carrot" of Otto von Bismarck in Germany, the Austrian Government enacted series of Acts on health and other types of social insurance systems, which were not universal, but had differences for different types of workers and employees, for example for miners, factory workers or white collars. The Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia: law as an instrument of Nazi expansion

The thesis deals with the role of the law in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (1939-1945) during its economic exploitation, Germanisation and categorisation of the population as a prerequisite for an end solution to the so-called Jewish and Czech question in the plans of the Nazis. It focuses on forming this "law of lawfulness", its content and enforceability and comes to the conclusion that rule-making at that time played an important, above all, organisation-related role in implementing occupation order, however if this was an obstacle to rapid and radical solutions, it became a burden which the Nazis replaced with injustices in the form of special treatment (Sonderbehandlung) of martial law, executions and deportation to concentration camps. An example of the instrumental abuse of the law on behalf of the Nazis to pursue their expansion plans leads us to the general conclusion that to safeguard against abusing the law to control others cannot rely on the law alone, but also requires a democratically functioning society and a conscious historical memory of nations. Human trafficking in Burma and Thailand between 2000 and 2016: a comparative perspective

The thesis approaches an issue of human trafficking in Burma and Thailand between 2000 and 2016. In the first part, the work concentrates on structure of the text, methodological approach, definition of basic concepts, and human trade situation in Southeast Asia. In the second part, trafficking profile of both analysed countries is discussed by using a case study method and comparison of similarities between Burmese and Thai human trafficking.

Cooperation of the state and non-governmental non-profit organizations in combating labour exploitation in the Czech Republic

The submitted thesis focuses on the cooperation of the state and non-governmental non-profit organizations in fighting labour exploitation in the Czech Republic. It is one of the most frequent forms of the human trafficking in the CR. The thesis is based on several theories and concepts, such as the actor - network theory, the institutional theory, the Four "C" theory, the NNO theory or the dignified work concept. The thesis analyses the concept of the policy on labour exploitation in the Czech Republic with a focus on the cooperation of main actors from state and non-profit sectors in fighting labour exploitation and proposes how to improve this cooperation. The thesis defines different relevant terms as well as the term "labour exploitation". It also presents statistical data concerning this phenomenon. An analysis of policy documents on a transnational and national level is used to analyse the policy concept. Forced Labour in the Czech Republic Abstract The submitted dissertation thesis examines so far neglected issue of forced labour in the Czech Republic in its complexity, i.e. both its lawful (e.g. work performed by imprisoned persons) and unlawful forms. It seeks to discover whether the present law (and extra-legal regulation) on this topic is sufficient. For this purpose it examines not only the corresponding law across individual branches of law, but also its place in the historical and moral- philosophical context. In the first parts, the submitted thesis deals with the existence of free will as a precondition of considering a work freely chosen and with the existence and content of objective morality as a precondition of considering anything morally right. Special attention is dedicated to forced labour during Protectorate and communist regime in Czechoslovakia. Slavery and its modern aspects

1 Abstract Slavery and its modern aspects This diploma thesis deals with the current and controversial topic. Aim of this thesis is to put attention to the speeches, forms and incredible frequency of modern slavery - phenomenon that would be at first glance wrongly seen as just historical issue. First chapter of the thesis speaks about historical excursion of slavery. Because of the limited scope is history focused on the main areas of ancient Greece and Rome, the area of the American continent with its huge business of African slaves, the period of Second World War and finally on the brief history at Czech territory. After the historical chapter is focus stressed on theoretical presentation of the problem - the nature of this phenomenon. Slavery is especially considered as part of International Guardianship of Human Rights. Theoretical part is followed by examples of most frequent real forms of modern slavery. These forms include sexual slavery and human trafficking, forced labor, forced marriage and child slavery as probably the most serious form of modern slavery. Forced Use of Secondary School Students During the Occupation

Abstract This dissertation deals with yet completely unprocessed issue of forced labor deployment of secondary and vocational school pupils in the Czech lands during the occupation by Nazi Germany. After the initial characteristics of the development of the German and the Protectorate economy and the Nazi attitude to use workforce of its own population and of occupied countries, the other chapter is devoted to the situation in the Czech education in 1939-1945. The Nazis considered the Czech intelligence as the enemy, so after the closure of Czech universities they deliberately restricted Czech secondary education. These restrictions did not have only national political, but also economic significance. From 1939 workers from the Czech lands were sent to work in the Reich. This trend increased significantly from 1942, when Germany intensified the expansion of war production and at the same time they started extensive program of forced labor of foreign workers in German industry. The view of Czech students on issues of forced labour

The aim of this master's thesis is to ascertain knowledge of Czech students in secondary schools, or more precisely in Grammar school, about the issue of forced labour during World War II. The master's thesis is based primarily on literature and own research and is divided into two parts. The first part is the theoretical part where is briefly introduced the history of forced labour in the general level (definition, type of work, working conditions, division of workers, etc.) and the second part where is conduct social research which is oriented only to Czech students. This research is conducted through a questionnaire survey that has the form of mixed research (questions and its evaluation is both quantitative and qualitative). Based on this research is evaluated both the overall state of knowledge of this issue (it compares the first-years students and fourth -years students of secondary schools), and is also taken account of the issue of the topic processing in secondary school textbooks.
