Comparative analysis of professional English texts

Cílem této bakalářské práce je srovnat tři odborné texty psané v anglickém jazyce. Všechny texty se zabývají humanoidními roboty, ale každý z jiného úhlu pohledu. První z textů je zveřejněn ve vědeckém časopise ‘Science Robotics‘ a je příkladem populárně naučného stylu. Druhý z nich je vyňatý z knihy ‘Humanoid Robots, Human-like machines‘ a zastupuje odborný styl. Třetím materiálem k analýze je video, které je zveřejněno na YouTube kanálu společnosti CNET. Aby mohlo být video použito jako výchozí materiál bakalářské práce, musel být text videa nejdříve přenesen do písemné podoby. Rozdíl mezi těmito texty je patrný, neboť každý z nich je určený pro jiný typ čtenáře či posluchače. V práci jsou popsány obsahy vybraných textů a vysvětleny jejich styly. Dále se práce zaměřuje na porovnání textů z hlediska mluveného a psaného jazyka, analýzu textů podle Jakobsonova modelu komunikace a na analýzu podle registru.
The Culture of Spoken Speech by Czech Radio Announcers and Moderators

The bachelor's thesis deals with the culture of the speech of announcers and moderators in the environment of the public-law institution Czech Radio. The theoretical part of the work is focused on the most important tool of radio speakers, i.e. language in its spoken form, and describes how its role is changing in today's society and how it differs from written language. The thesis also deals with the general principles of media functioning in the Czech Republic, closer attention is paid to Czech Radio. The conclusion of the theoretical part of the work deals with valid orthoepic, lexical, morphological and stylistic principles. The practical part of the work tries to answer the question of whether the expressions appearing in them are in accordance with the standards binding for public communication, using the linguistic analysis of the radio programs of the Czech Radio. The questionnaire survey introduces the attitude of society to radio broadcasting.
Accuracy and fluency in the speech of the advanced learner of English

The thesis analyses the accuracy and fluency exhibited in the spoken advanced-learner English of Czech students of English philology. It draws its data from a learner corpus comprising fifty 15-minute interviews with these learners and from a parallel native-speaker corpus of forty-nine 15-minute interviews. As regards accuracy, the learner data is analysed using techniques of error analysis. Salient features of advanced learner English are identified and the subsequent quantitative analyses reveal that throughout the entire group of students (which is characterized by what revealed itself to be a wide proficiency span) two groups of error types are found to be much more frequent than any other, namely errors in the use of articles and tenses. For the fluency measurements a small selection of variables has been chosen to describe speed fluency (speech rate) and breakdown fluency (the frequency of unfilled and filled pauses), and the results are compared with those for the parallel native-speaker corpus. The analysed native speakers are found to produce speech at a generally much higher rate than the majority of the learners. Miroslava Kotvová ABSTRACT: Bachelor thesis with the title the Development of the language skills of CODA is focused on the description of the development and acquisition of language hearing children of deaf parents, both spoken language and sign. The aim is to describe the development of language competence CODA studied to the basis of the available literature and interviews with CODA individuals. The theoretical part presents the field of the education of the deaf, culture and the Deaf community, sign language, but also a description of the acquisition of sign and spoken language. The practical part consists of the case studies of CODA which were based on the interviews with the individuals or even with them and their parents. The work highlights the problem of bilingual individuals growing up in a home environment with the sign language with the influence of the spoken language of the major society, but also the difficulty and importance of the election code of communication for deaf parents. N-grams in the speech of Czech and native speakers of English

The diploma thesis is concerned with the analysis of recurrent word-combinations in the speech of advanced Czech speakers of English and native speakers of English. The data used for the analysis is extracted from two corpora, learner corpus LINDSEI and native speaker corpus LOCNEC. The aim of the thesis is to compare the two groups of speakers, determine differences in their use of recurrent word-combinations and compare the findings to previous studies involving speakers of different languages. The quantitative analysis is performed on a sample of 50 speakers from each corpus and the frequency data is used to compare the two groups as to the number of types of word-combinations they use and how frequently they do so. The qualitative analysis is performed on a sample of 15 speakers from each corpus to determine functional differences. Four categories of word-combinations are determined in the analysis. In the conclusion, the quantitative and qualitative findings are compared to previous research involving speakers of different languages. Syntactic analysis of Czech speakers in the Romanian Banat

The purpose of this thesis is an analysis of syntactic perturbations in the oral production of Czech speakers of the Bigr village at the Banat region, Romania. In the theoretical part, this thesis describes the historical and linguistic context of the Banat's Czech villages, with special emphasis on Bigr. In the analytical part then, the thesis set out to test hypotheses based on previous research, using the BANAT language corpus created for this study. In cases where it deems possible, the results are compared to the ORAL language corpus of spoken Czech. The analysis verified the existence of certain phenomena of the Bigerian Czech (e.g. prepositional instrumental of instrument, omission of svůj pronoun), the frequency of which partly corresponds to the language situation in oral production in the Czech Republic (e.g. forward position of pronominal subject, reflexive se, si and auxiliary verb být). The presence of some other phenomena could not be verified.
Tagging a spoken learner corpus

The aim of the thesis is to propose a tagging system for a learner corpus of spoken English which would, apart from tagging errors, focus also on the features specific for spoken language. Theoretical part, therefore, introduces basic concepts including learner language, the development of learner corpora in the last 20 years and both classical and computer-aided error analysis. Features typical of spoken language are described in the theoretical part as well since these are the focus of the research part of the thesis. The Louvain tagging system used for error-tagging of a leaner corpus of written language is used as the basis for the tagging system proposed in this thesis. Based on the analysis of 20 transcriptions taken from the Czech part of spoken learner corpus LINDSEI, modifications of the categories taken from the Louvain error-tagging system are proposed and new categories necessary for a better description of spoken language are introduced. The tagging system proposed in this thesis should make further analysis of the tagged corpus easier.
