Media coverage of Ivan Jonák
Kobela, Jan ; Klabíková Rábová, Tereza (advisor) ; Doležal, Aleš (referee)
This thesis focuses on the representation of Ivan Jonák in the discourse of selected Czech media and points to the phenomenon of celebritization of criminals, which is becoming more and more frequent in the media environment. The theoretical part of the paper briefly deals with the basic understanding of the phenomenon of celebritization and follows the description of Jonák's life with a rich criminal past and the main case connected with his name - the murder of his wife Ludvika. At the same time, it attempts to approach the cult of personality he built, which, in the author's words, the media helped to build, and the ways in which it embedded him in the discourse of the Czech media built one of the first criminal celebrities. In the analytical part, according to the established methodology of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Norman Fairclough, the author is devoted to uncovering the main discursive frames in which the topic was presented in our media environment and in which context Jonák appears most often in the selected media. The author then engages in a selective analysis in the field of popular culture, podcasts, where Jonák's name resonated strongly given the publication of his autobiography and the airing of the drama programme The Nineties. The thesis concludes by offering a summary...
Media representation of George Floyd's death in the discourse of selected Czech online media
Lněničková, Adéla ; Řehořová, Irena (advisor) ; Švantner, Martin (referee)
The thesis focuses on the representation of the death of the African-American man George Floyd in the media discourse of selected Czech online media. Floyd's death filled the American, Czech and world media and activated the Black Lives Matter movement. The thesis focuses on conservatively oriented media (Echo24.cz, Reflex.cz and Forum24.cz). The research sample will be articles from 29 May to 25 July 2020. Critical discourse analysis according to Norman Fairclough is the methodological background of the work, it also works with several basic types of representation that will be used in the thesis. The theoretical section outlines the social constructivist paradigm in which the thesis is set and introduces in particular the work of Teun van Dijk and research focusing on media representations of minorities. The contextual part introduces the theory of social movements, the portrayal of George Floyd's death in the American and Czech media, and the events that the death triggered in the US (and later in other parts of the world). The analytical part reveals the main three discursive frames in which the topic was presented, namely the death of George Floyd as the beginning of the great protests, the death of George Floyd as politics, and the death of George Floyd and left-wing ideology. This part of...
A Discursive Analysis of the Changes in the Perception of Ecological Activism and Eco-terrorism
Haratíková, Alexandra ; Vávra, Martin (advisor) ; Šťovíčková Jantulová, Magdaléna (referee)
The diploma thesis analyzes the way in which ecological activism and eco-terrorism were described in 1997 and 2019 in the Lidové noviny and Právo dailies and tries to find the most significant similarities and differences between the two media discourses. The analysis is carried out with the use of Norman Fairclough's critical discursive analysis. The work is divided into a theoretical and an empirical part, where the former pays attention to the definition and beginnings of environmental activism and eco-terrorism and the most significant manifestations of ecological activism in the studied years - the completion of the Temelín nuclear power plant for 1997, and Greta Thunberg for 2019. The research part analyzes the discourse of ecological activism and eco-terrorism in the studied years, and compares them. The aim of the work is to capture the essence of these two discourses, their actors, main topics and arguments. The conclusion of the empirical part consists of comparisons between the two discourses and a discussion of their differences and similarities. Keywords Norman Fairclough, critical discourse analysis, ecological activism, eco-terrorism, media discourse, Temelin, Greta Thunberg
Reception of Strategic Economic Narratives: Case Study of the Kenyan News Discourse.
Řehák, Vilém ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Horáková, Hana (referee) ; Záhořík, Jan (referee)
Strategic narrative is a communicative tool for political elites to construct a shared meaning to the international politics, to articulate state's interests, to change the discursive environment, and to shape the behaviour of other actors. It has three different dynamics, which proceed simultaneously and reinforce each other: formation of the narrative within the given state, its projection in the international arena, and its reception in other states. Theory of strategic narratives fits well into the framework of new regionalism, which tries to analyse relations between the processes of globalization, globalism, regionalization, and regionalism. Until recently, such analyses were conducted from state-level and positivist perspective. As a result, the dimension of reception remained understudied. The presented thesis is an attempt to fill this gap. It analyses global political economy from the interpretivist constructivist perspective: it uses the leading local newspaper as a data sources and analyses media (news) discourse as one form of a broad societal discourse. Such an analysis can help us to analyse how local society assesses and reacts to strategic narratives and their internalization or rejection by local elites. In my thesis, I focus on narratives of the three superpowers (the US, the EU,...
Death in the media discourse: the case of the missing Malaysia Airlines plane
Brezík, František ; Švelch, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Hladík, Radim (referee)
The diploma thesis "Death in media discourse: the case of the missing Malaysia Airlines plane" inquires into the case of the disappeared flight MH370 from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. The flight has been mapped in Czech press as well as online newspapers from the perspective of death based on a subjectively composed qualitative method of grounded theory and discourse analysis. In the unprecedented tragical event, death is being constructed in a specific way in the context of media discourse. Hence, the allegoric character of epistemology and constructivist paradigm plays an important role here. The theoretic reflection describes the context of the relation between media and the topic of death. The abundance of topics in media associated with death is considered a symptom of a particular demand from society. The media increase the general tolerance towards images of death and violence, thus impacting character of such displays. In the reflection of the mental background, the character of perceiving death in a secularised society is denoted as metaphorical. In the research part of the thesis, discursive patterns are introduced. From them, we may understand what values associated with death are socially important and in what way does death appear and construct itself in the media. What is important here...
Sociological characteristics and media representation of ethnic minorities in the media discourse as theoretical examination of comparative studies possibilities: (analytical study of minorities representation in mass media in Czech Republic and Kyrgyzstan in the nineties of the 20th century)
Iskanderova, Tatiana ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Kandert, Josef (referee) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee)
The main issue of the dissertation paper was to provide a comparative analysis of ethnic minorities representation in the Czech and Kyrgzystan media discurses in the 90s of the 20th century. Both of the above mentioned countries have undergone a paradigm change, which in the terminology of the four theories of press changed the so-called soviet paradigm for libertarian one. The aim of the research was to demonstrate that it is possible to use the comparative analysis also in regard to ethnicities (ethnic minorities), cultures and national minority organizations that are geographically distant and typologically different. The research is based on comparison of four researches developed by the following authors: Petra Klvačová, Tomáš Bitrich: Jak se (ne)píše o cizincích, Věra Malkova: Этнические образы в республиканских газетах. Опыт этносоциологического исследования, Stuartem Hall (The spectacle of the "Other"), Bernard Berelson, Patricia J. Salter (Majority and Minority American's: An analysis of magazine fiction). The subject of the study is the collection of texts materials from printed media, supplemented and confronted with a trial research sample of responses provided by representatives of media, politics, science and public etc. (in-depth interviews) on the topic of minorities. By means of...
Act on protection of health against harmful effects of addictive substances: Development of narative of competing frames in media discourse
Lipková, Simona ; Nekola, Martin (advisor) ; Hejzlarová, Eva (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the development of tobacco control legislation with the main focus on the Act on protection of health against harmful effects of addictive substances with accent on smoking regulation in restaurants. The main line of this thesis is to determine the competing rhetorical frameworks and the main actors representing the individual frameworks which they present on the level of arguments and then to compare the development of narrative over time. At this level, the thesis focuses on the analysis of the presented rhetorical frameworks with the aim of discussing possible specific attributes that facilitated the process of reframing opposition actors, namely using the rhetorical strategy of narrative attributes of storytelling, technical terms, imagery or comparison. These goals were achieved by using a qualitative analysis of media outcomes and by using public policy documents, legal standards and other relevant documents. Theoretical support for answering the set forth questions was a frame analysis, which was conceptualized on the field of public policy by Rein and Schön along with the theory of social construction of target population conceptualized by Schneider and Ingram. In this thesis, written under the auspices of the case study, four main competing frames were...
Differend and Biopower. Discursive Regulation of Covering Muslim Women in Czech republic
Balážová, Lucia ; Fišerová, Michaela (advisor) ; Marcelli, Miroslav (referee)
The diploma thesis combines the theoretical concepts of postmodernism and biopower, that are subsequently applied to the particular issue of covering Muslim women living in the Czech Republic. This problem includes the religious, gender, media, social and philosophical level. Each of them is supported by key authors who are experts in this issue. Michel Foucault's concept of biopower, that covers both social and individual bodies through power discourse, interferes with the clothing, that gender attribute, like the Muslim veil, is based on the ideas of Judith Butler. The priority is the ambivalent conception by Jean-François Lyotard, as a kind of conflict, the outlet of which is pluralistic debate. The aim of the thesis is to find a tolerant solution of the current erratic situation in the collision of European and Middle Eastern cultures in the Czech Republic, like wearing the Muslim veil, as the expression of Islam in public with applying Lyotard's demanding ethics of accepting pluralism as an alterity. Key words: postmodern, contradiction, biopower, Muslim veil, media discourse, gender, plurality
Though mothers versus nannies: media presentation of institution of domestic workers in Czech Republic
Brabcová, Eva ; Ezzeddine, Petra (advisor) ; Uhde, Zuzana (referee)
Absract This master thesis deals with an analysis of media discourse of domestic workers in the Czech Republic. The work was based on discourse analysis of media articles generated by Anopress, which is a professional supplier of media monitoring. Through analyzing the way how media portrays institution of domestic workers, the paper tries to point out the media discourse that produces an image of domestic workers as an attractive products and organization of domestic work as a mediator for balancing public and private lives of women. Through concepts of feminist research I am going to try to prove that the media discourse is based on essentialist and discriminatory practices that have a major impact on shaping the image of institution of domestic workers and actors who are connected with this institution. Since this is a media production of information's construction thus it has a significant influence on the conceptualization of institutions of domestic workers in public sphere. Keywords: rental housework, domestic workers, media discourse, discourse analysis
