Media Representation of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in the Czech Republic from the Perspective af Survivors and Non-participants

This thesis explores how the Czech mainstream news media portrays sexual and gender-based violence from the perspective of people with different experiences and attitudes towards it. This includes survivors, relatives of survivors, those who are sensitive to the topic, and those who are skeptical or have a negative view towards the portrayal of sexual violence as a topic. The theoretical framework for this thesis is gender theory and cultural studies, specifically interpretive communities, which examine how the media influences our perceptions of gender and society. The research is qualitative and uses grounded theory practices, which involves open and axial coding to analyze how people with different experiences and attitudes towards sexual and gender-based violence perceive the way Czech media portrays the topic. This includes evaluating the portrayal, the emotions it evokes, and suggesting possible changes. Using the vignette technique, specific examples of media content on the topic of sexual violence are analyzed, and specific changes and adjustments are suggested. The evolution of czech hip hop media from subculture to mainstream

This Master's thesis focuses on the history of the hip hop subculture and the character of rappers and female rappers. The aim of this thesis is to analyze chosen hip hop media in the Czech Republic and to determine what is content and also linguistic characteristic of the chosen Czech hip hop media and further to determine the role of rappers and female rappers therein as well as gender balance of the examined media content. The thesis is divided into two sections, this being theoretical and methodical section. The theoretical section firstly examines the history of the hip hop subculture from the global perspective and its evolution in the Czech Republic. The first part of the history section focuses on the main milestones of the hip hop subculture history with the prevailing orientation on music, hip hop media, and other channels of its distribution. In the chapter describing the evolution of hip hop in the Czech Republic the thesis focuses on the development of the music genre, the introduction of the significant interprets and connection of the context with the other aspects of distribution of the hip hop subculture into the mainstream. Audience perception of feminist motifs in The Handmaid's Tale TV series

This master's thesis explores the role of feminist ideology in audience experiences across pop culture genres using the example of the Czech audience of the American television series The Handmaid's Tale (2017). In academic debate, this title is associated with the existence of a relatively new trend of feminist perspectives penetrating popular culture, as well as with the establishment of the so-called female-centric TV series genre, which is characterised by a focus on women's experience and position, and thus on feminist themes. The aim of this thesis is to obtain findings on how representatives from the Czech audience interact with this phenomenon, namely the audience situated in an environment where there is a stronger tradition of anti- feminist attitudes. The qualitative research is based on the theory of active audiences and is derived from the analysis of six semi-structured in-depth interviews using the grounded theory method. The purpose of the thesis is to discover the different ways in which the respondents perceive feminist motifs in The Handmaid's Tale and how they reflect on them in a real social context, consequently in relation to their personal attitudes towards feminism. The diploma thesis "It's something like man flu": Male view on period discusses the way men talk about menstruation, what is the level of their communication on that topic and how they view menstruating women. The text also reveals the stereotypes on menstruation in our society, and, last but not least, focuses on men's discourses of periods. The thesis focuses on three age groups classified as generations X, Y and Z. The theoretical part presents the basic concepts used in the text, such as gender, discourse, stereotype, etc. In this section, menstruation is viewed from biological, linguistic, historical and societal perspective which demonstrates the fact that within our society, it is an important part of women's lives. Subsequently, there is a part devoted to the definition of the term generation and the distinctions typical for each generation. The aim of this thesis is to, by using a mixed research, reveal men's approach towards periods. In addition to semi-structured interviews with men from individual generations, the author made use of an on-line questionnaire as well. Sociology, social science and human sciences in general are interested in the study of culture since its inception. This concern, however, have transformed over the years and the development of individual disciplines, especially in the 20th century, where the phenomenon of culture has become one of the main indicators of social coexistence. The concept of culture itself represents a very wide range of activities, objects and characteristics tied with the human and his behavior. This work focuses on the process, during which social scientists have begun to perceive the culture no longer just a file or a store of values, but as part of power struggle, hegemony, ideology and oppression in their everyday impact on the scientific knowledge and the creation of social discourse. It notes the rise of critical theory, which arose mainly in the context of the so-called "cultural turn", starting in the postwar period. Depiction of society in historical television series: Bridgerton versus The Knick

The diploma thesis examines the depiction of social classes, men, women and ethnic minorities in historical television serials. It is concentrated specifically on a qualitative analysis and comparison of two serials, namely Bridgerton (2020) and The Knick (2014- 2015), of which both fall within the quality television genre. The thesis deals with the ways of representation of the societies of their respective periods, aiming especially at identifying the incorrect depiction of the historical period in question, if any, and at finding similarities with the problems concerning the today's society (such as addressing the issues of social inequalities and manifestations of the identity policy). The theoretical part of the diploma thesis describes the phenomenon of a television serial, namely that concerning the historical serial and quality TV genres, the latter being the kind of television serial work distinguishing itself by comprehensive and innovative procedures, elaborate narratives, and emphasis put on the development of characters. The target of the thesis Relation between Textual Devices and Popularity of Media Text on the Example of Radio Series "Tlučhořovi" is to reveal if there exist any connection between significant textual devices used in the series and its popularity and success. As methods there are used semiotic analysis of sample of the series episodes and "respondent interview" with the listeners. In the first there is focus mainly on particular textual devices and in the second on what respondents consider to be reasons why they do listen to the series. Significant textual devices are one of the central themes of cultural studies and this work sets itself a task to deduce from findings conclusion which would be generalizable to relation between media texts and their audiences universally.

The analysis of czech serials' presentation during their introductory campaign in the prited media

"The analysis of czech serials' presentation during their introductory campaign in the prited media" is a title of this diploma thesis. The main aim is to answer the questions "Which characteristics of serials'contents, if any, are emphasized and preferred by the television channels through the chosen press?" and "How are the serials presented within the particular editorial contents?" The serials are Insuring Happiness I, II and Family Bonds I and the printed media are Magazines DNES/Pátek/Právo. The diploma thesis is divided into three main parts. Theoretical part considers the history of audience analysis, through its passive concept to the conception of active audience. This part then deals with "cultural studies" and the work of their two represenatives - Stuart Hall and explanation of encoding/decoding and David Morley with his monograph "The Nationwide Audience". Rap Scene as a Public Sphere: How Political Criticism Appears in Czech Rap and How Its Consequences in Public Relations

Diploma thesis Rap Scene as a Public Sphere: How Political Criticism Appears in Czech Rap and How Its Consequences in Public Relations presents Czech rap subculture in the context of traditional and modern approaches to cultural studies. Work deals with Czech rap as a public sphere that has the opportunity to speak to broad fan bases through its content, to establish public discourse and to shape the way of listeners' thinking about public affairs. The diploma thesis focuses on the politicization of rap and politically motivated texts by the authors of the Czech rap scene. The diploma thesis includes content analyzes of selected songs of the Czech rap underground and mainstream scene, which are interpreted with context to approaches to the study of subcultures and pop culture. The research includes in-depth interviews with Czech musicians and analyzes of other media interviews of some authors. The primary goal of the research is to find out the motivation and demotivation of Czech rap artists to enter into a public debate on political issues by their songs. The thesis reveals how Czech rappers understand their own position within the system of the majority society and answers questions about the current form of Czech and global rap music production.
