Making OpenType fonts with free software

In thesis themes of typography and computer font of OpenType format is described in details. At the beginning attention is paid to historical development of typeface, where stress is laid mainly on development of Roman and white letter with their characteristics. Having presented basis of typography work is concentrated on topic of digital font with emphasis on possibilities of OpenType format. Further its characteristics and advantages were listed compared to another formats and it was evaluated as format appropriate also for creating font in education process. Letterspacing and kerning were mentioned between basic graphical modifications in creating fonts. In theoretical part of the thesis they were examined in available programs designed for creating font in OpenType format. Except free available means into summary were included also commercial types due to absence of more advanced instruments and functions with free available applications. In evaluation was found that the most convenient for education is Fontlab Fontographer commercial program, free Type lite and Fontforge indicated for Open-source platform. Practical part of the thesis is focused on two chosen programs for creating main font characteristics. The goal was to detect if it is possible to reach identical results when using both programs. Fontographer program enabled to use wide tool palette dedicated to vector graphic processing by means of Adobe Illustrator similar instrument. In the case of Type lite program there were rather less instruments, what is sufficient for elementary work and familiarization with creating of digital typeface. Freeware shortage is basic absence of kerning, spacing or hinting functions. Comparing program possibilities, it falls that freeware programs based on OS Windows with their functionality are sufficient only for entry level users. The best option within free available programs is Fontforge for OS Linux which supports mentioned typographic functions. Fontographer was recommended for teaching of basic characteristics of OpenType font format. Another goal of the thesis was creating of recommended work procedure for creating basic characteristics of OpenType font for students, that is enclosed at the end of the thesis.

The Death Pit and the Glowing Swamp: A Permeation

The work is connecting well-known symbols of alchemy and various esoteric traditions and giving them visual and narrative form. There is deconstruction and glorification of this type of philosophy in the same time. The characters of the story are symbolizing the german and slavic archetypes. Their voyage from the pit of death to the glowing swamp and vice versa is representing the ageless story of life and death, creation and destruction, body and soul, light and darkness. All the symbols are used in the ironic and serious way in the same time.

"Homo deformis". The fascination by appearance of deformed human body in the Lands of the Bohemian Crown between 1526 and 1620

During the 16th century a new phenomenon occurred, that the physically disabled people were presented as curiosities or miracles because of their visage. Some cases were realy incredible therefore their appearances gave an impulse for creating an artwork. The images were popular between all social levels, were collected by townspeople, scientists, nobles and kings. The dissertation thesis "Homo deformis". The fascination by appearance of deformed human body in the Lands of the Bohemian Crown between 1526 and 1620 aims to explore how the phenomenon of human curiosities was reflected in early modern visual art in the Czech lands. This dissertation thesis bases on individual examples of human monstrosity in various art forms such as portraits, allegories, scientific illustrations and pamphlets. It exams images of abnormal disabled people between 1526-1620 and focuses on their symbolic meaning, aesthetic interpretation. It summarizes the knowledge about perceptions of depicted abnormal persons in 16th century. It also shows the Early modern society reactions about "homo deformis", their everydayness and social status. This thesis studies reasons why the disabled body was a kind an inspiration for artists. How to wank princesses

The bachelor's thesis, entitled How to annoy princesses, deals with some aspects of tourism, as it manifests itself in crowded historical monuments. The personal experience of tour guide at Kost Castle offers me a perspective on the issue, with which I emphasize the common interest of the "mouflons" (i.e. castle visitors) for spectacle and sensations (fables, myths, Czech fairy tales, ghosts), which often wins over the interest in history itself. I capture the atmosphere of commercialized monuments in a grotesque way that is close to me. The goal of the work is to set a mirror to the public and ideally to stir up a debate about the decline of visitors' interest in the professional aspects of guiding or the state of the monuments themselves. The series of figurative medium-format oil paintings, supplemented by audio processing untrue facts, untrue stories and myths, indirectly follows on the book The Last Aristocrat written by Evžen Boček , which deals with a similar theme.

In the Mud of Dreams and Reality. Autobiographical Features in Prose Fiction of Pavel Růžek and Jerzy Pilch

The present thesis explores works of Pavel Růžek and Jerzy Pilch, its central focus being the analysis and interpretation of their approach towards one's own biography and one's identity as a writer. Although both authors come from the same generation, they address different literary traditions and construct different poetics. What they have in common, however, are literary motifs rooted in their biographies, such as alcoholism, the mythology of childhood, [the existence of] "fateful places," even particular types of women or other characters (including animals). Additionally, the thesis scrutinises the position of both writers in the consciousness of Polish and Czech readership along with their place on the two literary markets.

Apocalypse and the Grotesque in Ken Kesey's Sailor Song

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to describe and explain the use of grotesque elements in Ken Kesey´s Sailor Song. This novel by a well-known American author contains many of the key themes associated with sociocultural developments in the US in the second half of the 20th century. These include, for example, apocalypse and the impact of environmental change on the life of the main characters of this work. The secondary aim of this work is to describe and explain the occurrence of postmodern elements in this section. Another task of this work is briefly compare the novel of Sailor Song with other Ken Kesey´s works.

Dangerous Crossing: The Gendered Grotesque in the Selected Stories of Joyce Carol Oates

The aim of this thesis is to analyse selected short stories by Joyce Carol Oates from the perspective of intersecting gender and the grotesque, and to determine the significance of gender and gender roles or stereotypes in the grotesque present in the aforementioned texts. This thesis focuses especially on the theme of gendered violence, as it is an important element in all analysed stories: "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?", "Heat," "Haunted," "The Premonition," and "Extenuating Circumstances." The first part of this thesis is theoretical and is concerned with the summary and comparison of selected major theories of the grotesque and gender, emphasising especially the motifs and themes that are found in the short stories (bodily grotesque, violence, gender performativity, and the forms of gender or sexuality that transgress the binary and heteronormative framework). The second chapter addresses the term "grotesque," which is defined according to its etymology, and follows the historical changes of its meaning. It also describes the importance of the grotesque in visual arts, based especially on Frances S. Sepulchral Ironwork in Early Modern Bohemia. Ironwork and Sepulchral Environment between 1550-1740

The text deals with various types of ironwork from ca 1550-1740, which we can encounter in sepulchral spaces in Bohemia. The text includes notable examples of individual types of ironwork related to sepulchral monuments in Bohemia and even Central Europe, especially when the works were inspired by Bohemian examples. The main research subject matter of the dissertation is a typological group of ironwork that defined the space around a tombstone or mausoleum freely situated in a sacred environment, e.g. the most important cited work - the ironwork surrounding the Royal Mausoleum in Prague, or the ironwork surrounding the Cenotaph of Maxmilian I located in the Court Church of Innsbruck. Other types of ironwork related to sepulchral monuments are mentioned complementarily, such as ironwork closing off interior chapels, freely standing ironwork, and ironwork protecting sepulchral niches. Grotesque, or Queer? Homosexual characters in Tennessee Williams's selected short stories

This interdisciplinary thesis examines the portrayal of homosexual characters in Tennessee Williams's selected stories. Although the theme of homosexuality reoccurs throughout Williams's work, his short fiction constitutes a unique example, as it addresses this issue explicitly. The traditional scholarly view of Williams's depiction of homosexuality highlights the negative portrayal, which could be considered as verging on homophobia. This is closely related to the features of the Southern grotesque, which has become a mode typical for Williams's work. The thesis will largely confirm this view, yet at the same time, it will attempt to find out whether the male homosexual protagonists could be read as queer, i.e. whether they display any features, which would oppose the traditional concept of human sexuality as stable and unchanging. The second chapter will provide the theoretical background of the Southern Grotesque, the specific nature of which stems primarily from the characters, who (for various reasons) do not meet the criteria of normality and thus become misfits excluded from the society.
