Didactic interpretation of the novel Meta

This diploma thesis deals with the position of the novel Meta within the contemporary Czech literary scene, its analysis, interpretation from a genre and narratological point of view, and didactic potential. First of all, I deal with the general concept of popular and fantastic literature, its potential significance in teaching and the book categories of young adult and new adult, as the researched novel Meta falls under these genres and categories. I place the novel in the context of Czech and world fantasy literature and present how it is perceived by literary criticism. The main goal of the thesis is to capture the didactic potential of the novel and to demonstrate the wide possibilities of its use in teaching literature. Structural analysis and interpretation of themes and ideas will be used for this purpose. With this detailed literary analysis, I want to prove that the novel Meta should not be viewed only as popular literature without deeper ideas, but that it could differ in its construction, themes and overall meaning from the majority of modern novels for youth and young adults. Allusions of fantastic German literature of the romantic period in fantastic proses of Jakub Arbes and Julius Zeyer

- Aj In this work we focused on the literary genre of the fantastic short story, a genre that has its specific features, working with mystery and ambiguity, and relying on the interactive relationship between the reader and the text. We looked at terms fantastic literature, fantastic short story and we studied which attributes are typical for this literature (such as individual motifs, composition, atmosphere and language-specific resources). Than we were looking for the presence of these attributes in individual works of selected authors. The most important representatives of Czech fantastic stories were compared with selected German Romanticists who were the inception for our authors who followed them and in whose work we find the fantastic phenomena. Then we tracked the similarities and differences in work of these authors. We found, that despite substantial conformity in the use of specific attributes of fantastic stories, the individual works of our authors differs significantly, not only in the frequency of use of these attributes, but also in the overall tone of the work and its effect on the reader. The conception of hero in fantasy literature

ZBIEJCZUKOVÁ, I. The conception of hero in fantasy literature. Diploma thesis. Prague: ÚČLLV FF UK, 2010-2011. This diploma thesis deals with typology of heroes and heroins in fantasy literature, with special regard to heroic quest from the point of view of literally composition. One part of the thesis applies to the defition and history of fantasy genre in both anglo-saxon and czech environment. The thesis therefore uses and cites both czech and foreign fantasy literally works. The aim of the thesis is to point to archetypical neomythic structure of fantasy texts and to their tendency to recreate heroism using particular examples of fantasy literature.
The fantastic tale in Czech literature at the end of the 19th century and Karel Švanda ze Semčic

This bachelor thesis deals with the term fantastic tale and its modifications in Czech and foreign literary production from the end of the 19th century. The starting point is the work of writer Karel Švanda from Semčice (Fantastic Tales, 1892; Bizarre Tales, 1897) who was not only a creator of fantastic tales but also a translator. Specifically, he translated the work of E. T. A. Hoffmann into Czech language, whose tales are essential for the genre of fantastic literature. Besides Švanda's work, this thesis focuses also on its contemporary reception.
Thematics of madness in the tales of Guy de Maupassant

The main aim of this bachelor's thesis is to determine by which literary means Guy de Maupassant (1850 1893) portrays the theme of madness in his tales. This theme is associated with the genre of fantastic novel in the 19th century, but also with his own life. At the beginning, his life and his literary creation are presented. Then it is focused on the genre of the fantastic tales and novellas. The most important part of this thesis is the analysis of the selected texts which contain the element of madness. This analysis identifies motives typical for the characters, settings and plots of the selected texts. The obtained knowledge is summarised in the conclusion of the thesis. The whole thesis is written in French.
Space-time breakdown in Julio Cortázar's fantastic tales

As the title may reveal, my work will focus on space-time breakdowns in Julio Cortázar's (1914-1984) oeuvre. This Argentinian writer's work is centered mainly on the fantastic genre, specifically on tales. He is one of the most important representants of this genre in the zone of Río de la Plata, although for the most of his life he lived in Paris, where also many of his works were written. With help of other literary critics and theorists, I will try to define the space-time breakdowns in his creation. Tzvetan Todorov in his The Fantastic: A Structural Approach to a Literary Genre, distinguishes between three main categories: the strange, the fantastic and the marvelous. Another critic, Ana María Barrenechea, in her a little bit more vital theory divides the fantastic into these three categories: the natural, the unnatural and the mixture of both. As an example I will use four of Cortázar's tales. On those, I will apply the mentioned theories, nevertheless I will also point out the possible lack of clarity and obsolescence in them and will try to offer some new alternative solutions. Science and mythology in the short stories by Leopoldo Lugones

RADKA SOTÁKOVÁ: CIENCIA Y MITOLOGÍA EN LOS CUENTOS DE LEOPOLDO LUGONES (Science and mythology in the short stories by Leopoldo Lugones) ABSTRACT The fantasy short stories by Argentinian Leopoldo Lugones are traditionally divided in two mutually exclusive and opposite groups: the mythological and the science based ones. In this paper, we analyze the short stories from the author's collection Las fuerzas extrañas and the critical papers on fantasy literature and Leopoldo Lugones to study the possible division. We base our study on three aspects: the distribution of characters throughout the book; the description of the forces that create the supernatural element; and finally on the references that appear abundantly in the collection. We observe the correlation of the three aspects with the traditionally delimited types and try to establish whether this division can be considered suitable and exact enough to capture the spirit of the short stories.
The Character of Golem in German and Czech Author's Works

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá postavou Golema v dílech německých a českých autorů. V první kapitole se zaměřuji na Prahu na přelomu 19. a 20. století, kde se tomuto tématu věnovali hlavně němečtí, převážně židovští autoři. Jejich tvorba je označována pojmem "pražská německá literatura". Vedle nich o Golemovi píší i čeští spisovatelé. V druhé kapitole přibližuji dobu za vlády Rudolfa II., kdy žil rabi Löw, který podle pověsti Golema stvořil a oživil šémem. Poslední kapitola je věnována obecným informacím o oživlé hliněné postavě. Následně zde analyzuji jednotlivá díla předem vybraných autorů. Po zhodnocení sedmi bodů, na které jsem se ve své práci zaměřila, uvádím výsledky této analýzy. V některých případech uchopili autoři jednotlivé situace velice podobně, v některých se značně odlišovali. Právě odlišnost přístupu a pestré variace zpracování dotváří Golemův mysteriozní obraz.
Dystopia: "We" and "They" in the Czech and World Fiction of the 20th Century.

In this thesis I mainly analyzed the canonical dystopian works, like J. Zamjatin We and G. Orwell 1984, based on this observation I circumscribe the five criteria by which the dystopian fictional world works. In the following sections, I observed the role and place of these criteria in the 20th century Czech literature works.
