Stereotyping of Indians in professional sports in the USA: Case studies of Cleveland Indians and Washington Redskins

This bachelor's thesis deals with the stereotypical depiction of the Indigenous peoples of North America in sports within the United States. In the United States, American Indians are presented with a distorted and biased image of the "White man's Indian," which is reflected in the names and logos of teams in the sports industry. The aim of this bachelor's thesis was to evaluate biased views of Indians and to provide evidence of the negative impacts of mascots and logos on Native Americans in professional sport. Case studies of the Cleveland Indians and the Washington Redskins were used for this purpose. The method of qualitative analysis and the method of oral history for interviews with respondents were used to study the sources that deal with this topic. The conclusion of the thesis summarizes the negative and racist depictions of Native American logos and mascots, which are mere articles of the owners of the above- mentioned clubs. These logos and images harm the real Indians and create a vacuum that presents them as historical relics. In conclusion, the author proposes a solution to this controversy, which is the abandonment of the use of Native American symbols in sports.

Wage Discrimination in US Sports: Comparative Analysis

The issue of salary discrimination in the US sport has been a controversional topic, largely dscussed in the context of racial discrimination in American society. Numerous papers written in this field in the previous years investigated each of the US Major Leagues separately. This thesis provides a comparative analysis of wage discrimination in the Nationall Basketball Association, Major League Baseball and National Football League. The data on players' contracts for all leagues were collected based on 2015-2018 unrestricted free agents' signings with a different sample of players for each specific year. We created five unique datasets for the comparative analysis, including one NBA, two NFL and two MLB related samples, where the MLB datasets represent batting and pitching players, while the NFL samples refer to the players on the offensive and defensive positions. For the estimation of players' productivity, we considered the average performance statistics in three years prior to the first contract year. By adding dummy variables reflecting players' race into the regressions and applying the Ordinary Least Squares method we could compare the size of the wage premium paid to the representatives of the specific race. Analysis and recommendations of the management of the baseball club Kotlářka Praha

Title: The analysis and the recommendation for the management of baseball club Kotlářka Praha. Objectives: The aim of the bachelor thesis is to analyze the internal environment (the strengths and weaknesses) of the baseball club Kotlářka Praha and then compare it with competitor Draci Brno. The strengths and weaknesses of the Draci Brno baseball club are included as well. The comparison of these two leading baseball clubs will help us to find out which factors are behind the long-term and repeated success of the Draci Brno club, and whether these factors can be implemented to the conditions of the Kotlářka Praha club, whose main and long-term goal is success in the Czech Extraleague and quality youth work. Draci Brno dominates in both factors. Methods: The main source of information for analyzing the internal environment of both organizations were personal interviews and correspondence via e-mail with the leaders of both baseball clubs. An audio recorder was used to record conversations. To supplement the data, a study of publicly available documents from both organizations and the Czech Baseball Association was carried out. Comparisons of movements during a baseball swing at pitches from a pitcher or from the pitching machine

Title: Comparisons of movements during a baseball swing at pitches from a pitcher or from the pitching machine Objectives: The aim of the research is analyses of kinematic record of baseball swing and its differences in mechanics while using three distinct variants. Standard live baseball pitching, practice pitching machine, and hitting from the batting tee. Methods: Conducted research is a case study descriptiveness, in which we gather a large number of data from five individuals. Video of five probands and their execution of hitting approach was created in three different variations. The record from the camera was then evaluated through the use of computer program Dartfish, which is designed for analyses of motor skills. The acquired data was formed using using a one-way analyzes of variance. Results: When hitting from the batting tee, stage of the leg kick and upper body load is substantially longer, which is caused by absence of variable of moving ball. Therefore players are not limited by timing of the hitting motion directly dependent to a moving ball. When hitting against pitching machine the time of player's load is longer in compare to facing live pitcher, which is in this case caused by the absence of conscious prediction of pitchers motion. A comparison of the organizational structures of the Czech and Slovak baseball federations

Title: A comparison of the organizational structures of the Czech and Slovak baseball federations Objectives: The main objectives of this bachelor thesis are to obtain and analysis the data regarding the organizational structures two different national federations of baseball and their economic results from 2016. After analysis and comparison of data, recommendation for their improvement are proposed. There it was important to focus on their diversity, and then compare the competences and activities of each section. Based on the information received, the thesis contains proposals for innovations in both federations. Methods: The main method of collecting data for this thesis, was studying the legislative and publicly available documents of both organizations, and deep interviews with high-ranking members of the board for both organizations. A voice recorder was used for the interviews. In the next part of the thesis I used comparison analysis. The comparison includes the spread of structures, number of organizational levels, activities and delegation of authority, and the competencies of each section, as well as a percentage budget statement. Evaluation of postural stability in subjects engaged in combat and non-contact sport

Title: Evaluation of postural stability in subjects engaged in combatand non-contact sports Objectives: The aim of this diploma thesis is to investigate the influence of contact itself during sport activities on postural stability of athletes. Methods: Into this quasi-experiment study there were picked 16 atheletes (n=16) in age from 22 to 35 years. Selected individuals were divided into two groups of eight according to their sporting activity (combat sports, baseball. In the mentioned individuals the postural stability was measured. To measure postural stability the computerized dynamic posturography of EquiTest Smart System from Neurocom was used. Measured data were processed using Neurocom Balance Manager Software. For the analysis of the data following statistical methods - paired t-test, Mann-Whitney test and rate of clinical signifikance (Cohen's d) were used. Results: The results indicate that individuals performing in combat sports were reaching higher mean scores in Limits of Stability than baseball players. This fact has been statistically and clinically proven. Racial Integration of U.S. Professional Baseball in 1940s and 1950s

The presented work "Racial Integration of U.S. Professional Baseball in 1940's and 1950's" deals with circumstances and motives, which led to the breakthrough in racial segregation in major baseball leagues a few years before the civil rights movement in 1950's and 1960's. Most of American society in 1940's followed the racial segregation rules. The thesis approaches motives and roots, which led to baseball integration in time of unchallenged segregationist conventions. The main goal is to analyze the impact of the personal motives of Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey as well as the impact of outer factors, the Second World War and 1940's New York State law-making process on this issue. According to conclusions, Rickey was instrumental in ending racial discrimination in baseball. This move was caused by coordination of economic, sports and strictly personal reasons. Above all, the success of the integration was based on New York State laws forbidding the segregation in employment and putting pressure on segregated institutions, thus on professional baseball organizations.
