Bakalářská práce Rasová integrace profesionálního baseballu ve Spojených státech ve 40. a 50. letech 20. století se věnuje okolnostem a důvodům, jež vedly k prolomení rasové segregace v amerických profesionálních baseballových soutěžích několik let před hlavní vlnou hnutí bojujícího za občanská práva v 50. a 60. letech. Většina společnosti 40. let ve Spojených státech amerických se řídila pravidly rasové segregace. Práce zohledňuje motivy a kořeny, které vedly k rasové integraci baseballu v době, kdy byly ještě společenské zvyklosti segregace nezpochybněny. Hlavním úkolem práce je zohlednit, jakou roli sehrála osobnost a osobní motivace generálního manažera Brooklyn Dodgers Branche Rickeyho a vnější okolnosti, především 2. světová válka a zákonodárný proces státu New York v 1.polovině 40. let. Podle závěrů práce se Rickey jednoznačně zasloužil o ukončení rasové diskriminace v baseballu. Tento krok byl zapříčiněn souhrou jeho ekonomických, sportovních i čistě osobních důvodů. Předpokladem pro úspěch integrace však bylo zákonné prostředí ve státě New York, jež odmítalo rasovou segregaci na trhu práce a vytvářelo tlak na dosud segregované instituce, tedy i baseballové profesionální kluby. The presented work "Racial Integration of U.S. Professional Baseball in 1940's and 1950's" deals with circumstances and motives, which led to the breakthrough in racial segregation in major baseball leagues a few years before the civil rights movement in 1950's and 1960's. Most of American society in 1940's followed the racial segregation rules. The thesis approaches motives and roots, which led to baseball integration in time of unchallenged segregationist conventions. The main goal is to analyze the impact of the personal motives of Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey as well as the impact of outer factors, the Second World War and 1940's New York State law-making process on this issue. According to conclusions, Rickey was instrumental in ending racial discrimination in baseball. This move was caused by coordination of economic, sports and strictly personal reasons. Above all, the success of the integration was based on New York State laws forbidding the segregation in employment and putting pressure on segregated institutions, thus on professional baseball organizations.
