Possible Uses of Camp in Interpretation of Czech Contemporary Cultural Background

Proposed dissertation is focusing on specific eccentric aesthetics based on hyperboles, ambivalent meanings and ironic attitude, which in Anglo-American background is so called camp derived from French. Camp origin can be found on the court of Louis XIV, where we can notice passionate tries to cultivate affected court-style culminating in baroque metaphor of the world as a theatre. Due to impact of modernity and postmodernity, scope of the camp extended to various cultural spheres and phenomenon began to corelate through its eccentricity with common marginality, respectively with something what is different from "normality" and "genuineness" also settled schemes of perception or ways of historical reflection. Goal of proposed dissertation is based on theoretical-historical interpretations to trace mentions of camp (mainly in literature) with focus on Czech background, where its rich interpretational potential can clarify most of social-cultural tendencies.
"Guilty pleasures": The tension between the pleasure from popular culture and good taste

This Master's thesis deals with the phenomenon of so-called guilty pleasures within the consumption of popular culture. The theoretical basis of this work consists of three thematic pillars. Specifically: concepts related to the consumption of popular culture by authors such as Fiske and Ang; a distinction based on taste and cultural consumption, in particular by Bourdieu, Peterson and Holt; and a set of theoretical-critical views on the very concept of guilty pleasure. However, this complex combination of (not only) pleasure and guilt is still just gaining more academic attention. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of this phenomenon, through individual interviews with consumers characterized by both high cultural capital and a wide range of preferences, known as cultural omnivory. Within those consumers, the contrast of low and high taste, the presumed clash of acceptance of legitimized aesthetic rules and their violation, are present. The research question "How do cultural omnivores with a high cultural capital perceive the consumption of products of popular culture - especially those which they consider their guilty pleasures?" is answered through thematic analysis of coded interviews.
Czech Film Taste in Sociological Perspective

The aim of this work is to find specific preferences of Czech film consumers. By these specific preferences it is meant the type of stories, heroes or genres which does Czech film audience prefer. The analysis is made on the most popular films (i.e. with the biggest attendance) in last twenty years using the theory of Erving Goffman, especially his concept of frame analysis. By using the terms of frame analysis the content of the selected films is compared with the same amount of the most popular films in USA. This comparison is then used to find the differences or similarities among these two different areas, but in particular it is done to underline the specifics of Czech film audience. Relationship between taste and social hierarchy in Baku, Azerbaijan

In the bachelor thesis I am going to examine the relationships between art and society. As French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu argued in his Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste, “no judgement of taste is innocent” (1979). Sensing and experiencing aesthetics is not objectively given but rather the result of continuous choices between what we sense or perceive as aesthetically satisfying and what we consider tasteless, hideous or even trumpery. These various aesthetic choices represent positions within or mutual relations between classes. According to Bourdieu, society functions as a system of power relations and simultaneously as a symbolic system in which subtle differences in taste become the basis of the social hierarchy. Thus, Bourdieu’s thesis on the perception and conceptualization of taste provides us with useful analytical tools to study art as an instrument of social stratification. The aim of this thesis is to gain and provide a deeper understanding of the ways, in which taste creates and reproduces socially structured suffering in the contemporary post-socialist Azerbaijan.
Meaning of Consumer Behaviour Changes Related to Transition from Student Social Role to Employee Social Role

The thesis deals with the changes related to shift from university to first serious job. We have tried to find out how do graduates and university students reflects possible changes related to this situation with focus on changes in consumption behaviour. The theoretical part is based on theories of practices with their representatives Pierre Bourdieu and Alan Warde. Also approach of Mary Douglas and several classical approaches to consumption (e.g. Thorstein Veblen's conspicuous consumption etc.) and approach to reference groups theories are presented as a theoretical background of the thesis. The research is based on qualitative interviews with graduates or university students who have started to join their first serious job. All interviews have been conducted with Prague residents who work in commercial companies in Prague, their position have been often related to marketing area. The main finding is that the respondents perceive their social status as higher than before, they have started to follow practices related to their work team which have manifested also in the change of some of their consumption patterns (connected with e.g. eating, travelling, car purchasing and using). Divnolidi z Brna a okolí: Construction of otherness on Facebook social network site

This thesis aims to describe and analyze the process of construction of otherness, use of humour and taste performance on Facebook page Divnolidi z Brna a okolí. Theoretical background explores contemporary approaches to the research of social network sites (particulary on privacy and sharing; a separate chapter is devoted to Facebook social network site), sociological term of taste as the instrument for social distinction (here, the study is primarily based on the work of Pierre Bourdieu), interdisciplinary concept of otherness (in which we examine works of Mary Douglas, Stuart Hall and Marc Augé) as well as theoretical approach to humour called theory of superiority. We conducted a quantitative description of Divnolidi z Brna a okolí page and a qualitative analysis (a method often called "data-crawling") of 47 page posts. Analytical section of this study focuses on answering following questions: What types of posts can be found on the site? How are individuals captured in these posts perceived? How do the users perceive taste / otherness of the captured individuals? Where were these "weird people" (in Czech language "divnolidi") spotted and how do the users perceive these places?
