Quality of Urban Structure Based on Evaluation of their Inhabitants

Residential satisfaction is a part of the social pillar sustainable development. An investigation of satisfaction can contribute to designing of such residential estates that will better satisfy their needs towards overall life satisfaction. Overall life satisfaction underpins the prosperous and generally satisfied society. This work deals with the relationship between the urban structure and the satisfaction of the residents living there. To describe this relationship, it is necessary to define the terms urban structure and residential satisfaction. The research block shall be based on theoretical grounds and overview of urban structures. The theoretical block deals with the historical overview and development of urban structures in the city of Brno and Vienna since the mid-19th century to the present. Based on this knowledge, locations for case studies of the residential estates have been selected subsequently to represent various urban structures. A local survey, questionnaire survey and interviews with residents took place in the residential estates selected in this way. The result of the research some of questions answers and asks some other ones, because the residential satisfaction is a relative consideration and not an exactly expressible value. It is also conditional on many factors that cannot be managed in this work. It is evident that the compact city may not be well-functioning if it is not in the central part of the city and the relative success of the of the open building line of the prefab estates compared to compact sets nearby city centers has been also a surprising result. However, some other assumptions have been confirmed.

Selected monuments of the Late Gothic sacral architecture in South Moravia in arthistorical context

The diploma thesis entitled Selected Monuments of Late Gothic Sacred Architecture of South Moravia in Art Historical Context is based on the author's bachelor thesis. It deals with the history, architecture and context of the late Ghotic pilgrime church of St. Wolfgang in Hnanice near Znojmo. The thesis tries to place the Hnanice church in the context of other stylistically similar church buildings in South Moravia and Lower Austria. It gives three examples of possible analogies from the Moravian Danube and another three examples from the Austrian Danube. The bulidings are described and further compared. The thesis also tries to answer the question of where influences may have flowed and what all may have influenced on the emergence and rising of sacral architecture of the late Gothic period.

How Does the Living of Elderly Citizens Look Like in Prague and Vienna? Comparison of Housing Policies through the Theory of Social Construction of Target Populations

The thesis pursues a comparison of housing policy designs in Prague and Vienna with a particular focus on the target group of the elderly population. The research is based on the social construction theory of target populations by Ingram and Schneider. The aim is to map the housing situation of elderly in both cities, identify differences and similarities between the two designs and propose housing policy recommendations stemming from the analysis. The research is based on statistical data, public policy documents and on expert interviews. The thesis describes social construction theory and principles of comparative research, demographic ageing and the situation of the elderly in terms of finances, housing, health and education. Further ahead, it describes the housing policies in Prague and Vienna, moving from the general setting of these policies to specific measures concerning the elderly. In the last section, it describes selected elements of policy design and proposes policy recommendations.

Oasis in the heart of Europe. Orientalism in Czech architecture of the 19th century

Europe of the early 19th century is searching for its new artistic persona. Several new and distinct directions come into being, all vying for a spot on the landscape of arts and for the leading position. This desire to search for new directions deepens Europe's interest in the Orient. Meeting of the West with the East goes all the way back to early Middle Ages and manifests through several phases all the way to the present day. Fascination by the Orient in the 19th century was connected mainly to Napoleon's Egypt campaign, Greek uprising against the Turks, France's conquest of Northern Africa, World Exhibition in London and excursions into exotic lands themselves undertaken by contemporary enthusiasts. The wave of orientalism permeated all levels of fine art. It is most often seen in painting, graphic arts and photography and seen the least in sculpture. The thesis follows the orientalism phenomenon from the end of 18th century to the First World War. The goal is to provide some insight into its influence on areas of the fine arts in central Europe and provide background for future research in doing so. Oratorio Santa Cecilia by Antonio Draghi

The bachelor thesis deals with the oratorio Santa Cecilia by Antonio Draghi (1634 - 1700). The paper also summarizes the present knowledge about Draghi and his work, deals with the origins of the oratorio in Italy and the adoption and development of its tradition in Vienna during the 17th century. The thesis also focuses on the legend of Saint Cecily as a theme in music and includes the edition of selected arias and one ensemble of this oratorio. Prague, the Czech capital, is compared to other capitals in the region - Berlin, Vienna, Bratislava, Warsaw, and Budapest. The research is focused especially on a comparison between Prague on the one hand and Vienna and Budapest on the other in the period 2003-2011. For the research presented in the submitted thesis, secondary data from national statistical offices of the selected countries and specialized statistical databases were used. This quantitative research has been combined with qualitative studies. Since 1989, Prague has transformed from a destination of "former Eastern bloc" into a destination comparable with major cities of Western Europe. Immigration and City: Integration Policies in Berlin and Vienna 1971-2011

The doctoral thesis compares and interprets the development of local integration policies of (West) Berlin and Vienna in 1971-2011 on the background of the transformation of Germany and Austria from ethnically homogenous to multicultural countries. Both metropolises first balanced between refusing the permanent integration of immigrants ("temporary integration") and selection of foreigners suitable for integration, later searched for a balance between the traditional concept of assimilation and the more modern multicultural approach; in the last decade they favoured the diversity policy, in more or less close connection to the concept of interculturalism. Although both cities represent essentially similar cases, this development was not straightforward and simultaneous, especially in the first phase before the migration crisis at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s. Ödön von Horváth - The Development of the Individual in Modern Popular Plays

This thesis deals with different types of individuals in modern popular plays of Ödön von Horváth. In the first part the development of popular plays is outlined from its beginnings to the present, and there also is a brief description of the Vienna theaters at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. Followed by an analysis of the characters in Horváths popular plays, which are: "The Mountain Railroad", "Tales from the Vienna Wood", "Italian Night" and "Kasimir and Karoline".
