Soviet-US Relations during Polish Crisis, 1980- 1981
Roškotová, Jitka ; Horčička, Václav (advisor) ; Soukup, Jaromír (referee)
This Diploma thesis analyses the development of relationships between two superpowers of the Cold War, the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, during the Polish crisis period at the turn of the 70's and 80's of the 20th century. The objective of the Thesis was, above all, to reconstruct carefully the Polish crisis events, to discover its reasons, effects and implications for mutual relationships of the superpowers. The introduction of the Thesis focuses on the development of the Soviet-American relationships in the course of the Cold War from its beginning to the Polish crisis outbreak. Consequently, the foreign policy of both superpowers, their characteristics, main actors and factors are analysed. In the 1970s, Poland struggled with enormous economic troubles which were also connected with social disorder. In summer of 1980, the disorder developed into a strike wave which the existing communist regime did not manage to get under control. The Polish events thus resulted in proclamation of the state of emergency which was supposed to "save" the communist system in Poland. The Polish coup d'état in the 1980s definitely showed to the entire world that the communist system can be maintained in the states of Central and Eastern Europe only by force. In the...
Interests of the United States and Canada in the Artic
Vargová, Žaneta ; Bečka, Jan (advisor) ; Šír, Jan (referee)
The Northwest Passage is a potentially navigable seaway in the Arctic that is delimited by the Beaufort Sea in the west and the Buffin Bay in the east. As the Arctic ice cap melts further each year, the Passage may become navigable in the medium term. This brings to light many important questions and problems closely linked to the Passage's legal status. This thesis first maps the different reasons to deal with the problem and focuses on Canada as the state to be potentially most affected by the Passage's use. Canada takes the view, that the Northwest Passage are internal waters and the U.S. and the EU, that it is an international strait. The work probes the approaches to determine the status in compliance with the international law as they were claimed chronologically. However, the work stipulates the legal solution is not the only one imaginable and can even be potentially harmful to Canada. Therefore, the next part of the thesis deals with mapping them. A political solution on the international level is offered arguing that cooperation should be established in the region to safely and peacefully use the potentially navigable Passage. The last way to solve the situation lies in national policies as Canada has historically dealt with the issue internally several times. Some of its efforts have also been...

US Private military companies.
Pejřimovský, Martin ; Anděl, Petr (advisor) ; Raška, Francis (referee)
Private military companies in the USA aren't a completely new phenomenon. According to various sources, first mercenaries set foot on the American soil no later than during the famous war of independence. What has changed about the US private military contractors since these times is their overall number, the amount of countries they operate in, the scale of services they can provide and last but not least, the extent of money they receive. The process of development of the US private military firms wasn't continual. They played only a minor role approximately up to the end of the Cold war. The US Army used them only to provide the construction, support and logistical services. These days however, the department of defense needs them to provide highly specialized tasks such as spy and counterspy operations, risk consulting, training of the elite armed forces, and the protection of convoys or high-profile people in the warzone. In this thesis I am trying to examine, why did the US private military companies become so essential for the army of the United States. The results of my research show that the most important reasons for this development were the introduction of professional armed forces in 1973, a continuous decline of the defense budget after the end of the Cold war and the widespread...
Political Correctness and the Attempt at Social Transformation on the Example of Race: Success or Mistake?
Hořavová, Tatiana ; Sehnálková, Jana (advisor) ; Toth, Gyorgy (referee)
The phenomenon of political correctness is a fairly complicated phenomenon which creates a lot of controversy and draws a lot of attention. Despite the fact that political correctness was in the United States discussed mainly in the 1980s and 1990s, it does not mean the topic of political correctness is already out of public life. The author asks why political correctness is criticized, focusing on the question of education and through literature research - both secondary nad primary - comes to the conclusion that it is mainly due to unintended consequences of the phenomenon, chiefly through limitations imposed on the freedom of speech - either real or perceived, and also generally having a chilling effect on public discourse or lack of tolerance towards dissent. At the same time, cultural polarization of American society manifests itself quite strongly in the debate about universities. The polarization keeps the debate in a stalemate as neither side of the debate - liberal or conservative - seems to be willing to reconsider its position.
Immigrants or Refugees: A New Type of Exodus from Mexico to the United States
Kamal, Tereza ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Toth, Gyorgy (referee)
Apart from trade and drug control, immigration is one of the three major issues affecting U.S. - Mexican relations. The U.S. today has more immigrants from Mexico alone than any other country in the world has from all other countries of the world. The scale of this human movement, the persistence and the large proportion of the unauthorized low skilled migrants, which dominated this flow for decades, make Mexican migration unique. The decision to migrate North has always been driven by economic motives; the prospect of higher wages and a better living standard have been the main push factors, until recently. Since 2007/2008 there has been a significant change in the character of Mexican migration. This can be attributed to several factors influencing the process at once, but the primary reason is the escalation of drug related violence on the Mexican side of the border. The focus of my thesis is to analyze the transformation of Mexican migration since 2007/2008. I argue these years have been a turning point in the dynamics of migration for two reasons. Firstly, in 2007 the American economy turned into recession, which significantly affected the flow of unauthorized migration. Secondly, in 2008 the drug related violence in Mexico spiked dramatically. This had a deterrent effect on the unauthorized...
Reasons for American Intervention in Vietnam
Trubačová, Zuzana ; Tůma, Oldřich (advisor) ; Smetana, Vít (referee)
This thesis examines reasons for American intervention in Vietnam. It ranges over the period of the years 1950 - 1965, from the initial stages of American involvement in Vietnam to the onset of the full-scale war with the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV). The thesis investigates the decisive moments which eventually influenced the further development of American presence in Vietnam. In assessing the respective events the emphasis is put on the international political context, the US foreign policy toward Indochina/Vietnam, the decision- making process on the highest political and army levels, the relationship between the superpowers, and the personal beliefs of single international players. In the first part of the thesis close attention is paid to the initial phase of the American intervention - getting involved in the affairs of South-East Asia and ending with the Geneva Accords. The second part is focused on the critical years of 1963-1965 that set the scene for the subsequent escalation of the Vietnam war.
Reasons for U.S. veto in the United Nations Security Council on behalf of Israel, 1972-1997
Hlaváčová, Lenka ; Přikryl, Pavel (advisor) ; Halás, Matúš (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to define the reasons of the U.S veto on behalf of Israel in the United Nations Security Council through analysis of the drafted resolutions. Author presents the resolutions vetoed by the U.S. on Israel in 1972-1997. The analysis focuses on four fields: who proposes the resoltutions, what is the subject of the resotutions, what language is used in the resultions, and what is the stance of the U.S. Representative to UN. Author states that the sponsors of the resolutions aren't relevant for the U.S. decision-making. Author rather supports the opinion that the language used and the intention to solve the Arab-Israeli Conflict by the UN SC are most probably the reasons for the U.S veto. The unbalancedness of the resoltuions (in the U.S. Understanding) is also one of the causes of the veto. U.S is refusing to condemn Israel in UN SC resolutions and it is trying to have the Arab-Israeli conflict solved by the parties involved and not by the third party who would impose the conditions of the settlement.
