Brzicová, Kateřina ; Jelen, Libor (advisor) ; Tureček, Břetislav (referee)
This thesis delves into a detailed geopolitical analysis of the armed conflict in Yemen, examining the influences and factors that led to this conflict and the actors that have shaped this conflict since its escalation in 2015. The thesis aims to find the interconnectedness and motivations for the involvement of internal and external actors in the conflict in Yemen. Its primary goal is to find what motivates these actors to engage in the Yemen conflict and to examine their influence on the course and dynamics of the conflict. The thesis uses the methods of critical discourse analysis to examine the narratives and positions of the involved parties, enabling a deeper understanding of the political and ideological motivations and strategies that influence the course of the conflict. The analysis revealed the dominant narrative of internal and external actors through which they present and conceptualize the conflict and their role in the conflict and how they use this narrative to legitimize their actions - military and political. Despite standing on opposite sides of theconflict, the actors utilize similar narratives, adapting language to fit their agendas. Emphasizing defense and sovereignty, regional and security and stability, they accuse their opponents of responsibility for the continuation of...
Censorship on the Internet
The Media Discourse Analysis of the Normalization of Relations Between Israel and Arab States
Berková, Kristýna ; Volný, Vít (advisor) ; Lochovský, Jan (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the normalization of relations between Israel and the Arab states (with an emphasis on the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain) during 2020. By means of a suitable theoretical framework it aims to shed light on the reasons for establishing official diplomatic relations and, using critical discourse analysis, to compare media images of the countries and identify the form of the fifth geopolitical code. An analysis of 60 news articles subsequently shows that Bahraini, Emirati and Israeli reports portray the agreement as a path to peace and stability and highlight new economic opportunities. On the other hand, the articles differ primarily in their interpretation of the question of Palestine and the Iranian nuclear threat. Key words: Israel, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, normalization, critical discourse analysis

Fričová, Kateřina ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Weiss, Tomáš (referee)
The diploma thesis named British reaction to the Arab Spring events in the context of United Kingdom's relations with Persian Gulf countries is concerned with an impact of the revolutionary events of 2011, known as the Arab Spring, on bilateral cooperation between United Kingdom on one side and Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Oman on the other. While using quantitative analysis approach, it depicts how the Persian Gulf developments were reflected by prominent British representatives and members of the Cameron coalition government. Since the government promised to approach foreign policy matters through a liberal-conservative lens and also planned to further deepen its relations with Persian Gulf countries, the Arab Spring events can be interpreted as a clear dilemma for British policymakers. This thesis aims to answer whether such dilemma forced the government officials to re-asses the traditionally warm attitudes towards Persian Gulf and additionally, it demonstrates which spheres of their cooperation were threatened the most. Firstly, the bilateral relations between United Kingdom and Persian Gulf countries between 1971 and 2010 are described. Then, the focus moves towards the Cameron coalition government and its foreign- policy aims. In its final part, the thesis focuses on British...
Development of functional socio-economic specialization of the United Arab Emirates - comparison of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Koblížková, Adéla ; Tomeš, Jiří (advisor) ; Pulec, Jan (referee)
Over the past 50 years, the United Arab Emirates have undergone rapid development as a result of the country's extensive oil reserves, and currently find themselves in a state of economic prosperity. However, despite being one of the richest countries in the world and recently entering upon a path to end its oil dependency, the industries associated with crude oil remain a key pillar of the Emirati economy. The objective of this paper is to examine whether the current government's diversification strategy, which aims to foster industries not built upon the drilling or processing of oil, has been successful. A particularly interesting aspect of this issue is the contrast between the country's two largest emirates, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, whose specific socioeconomic indicators are compared within. The results of this analysis demonstrate that the structural foci of the two economies are markedly different. Whilst drilling and construction remain the focal points of Abu Dhabi's economy, the economy of Dubai has transitioned into the sphere of trade and transportation. Keywords: United Arab Emirates, diversification, oil, financial crisis

Weiss, Tomáš ; Pikhart, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Pekárek, Štěpán (referee)
The thesis is concerned with the influence of the income from oil industry on the economies of Algeria and the United Arab Emirates in the years 2000-2015. The topic is analysed from the point of view of the resource curse theory. This theory is defined as a negative relationship between excess of a non-renewable resource and economic performance. Alongside with the negative economic growth, the experts defined other factors linked to the resource curse. The method used in the thesis is an analysis of these indicators on the example of Algeria and the UAE, and subsequently the dangers of resource curse are identified. The thesis evaluates, based on the comparison of the performance of selected factors, the economical and institutional development of the chosen countries. In the conclusion the diversification efforts of the UAE in the economic field and relatively safe economic development of Algeria are commented. More or less positive tendencies may be observed also in the development of most of the institutional indicators of both countries.
