Čapková, Zuzana ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Dopita, Tomáš (referee)
This bachelor deals with an ethnic and religious conflict which divided in recent years the society of Northern Ireland into two irreconcilable communities. The negotiations brokered by the Irish and the British governments between major political parties in Northern Ireland in the late 90s opened space for a new phase of the peace process which ended in the signing-up of the Good Friday Agreement. The Agreement enabled to set a government and for the second time to reiterate the devolution suspended in 1974 because of the 1969 violent clashes. This work analyses a ten-year-long development in the province after 1998 underlying the political situation, the accomplishment of the peace process and the convergence of the population. Treating the operation of the new institutions based on the cooperation within Northern Ireland, between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and between the Irish and the British governments, in the centre of the attention there is a decommissionning process which has split up considerably political participants and Northern Irish society and has prevented for a long time from dealing a compromise. It examines the economic, educational and housing policies that were put into effect in Northern Ireland by Margaret Thatcher's government and endeavours to determine whether an improvement occurred in the socioeconomic situation of the Catholic population during her rule. Education, employment and housing were examined for the analysis. Margaret Thatcher only implemented greater changes in education during her third term in office. When she was prime minister there were no budget cuts in this area, and the budget grew slightly in the second half of the eighties. In the eighties, the trend from the previous decade continued, in which the number of Catholic students entering university grew significantly. The proportion of students from the working-class also increased. Margaret Thatcher's government considered housing policy its priority in the years 1981 to 1987. It supported the private ownership of real property, construction in the private sector and reconstruction of the housing stock. During this period, almost all examined aspects of housing improved. Not only was the average level in the Catholic community studied, but also the average level in ten districts with the largest proportion of a...
Sunnigdale Agreement: Consociationalism as a solution of conflict in Northern Ireland and its failure
Musilová, Karolína ; Říchová, Blanka (advisor) ; Fínková, Eva (referee)
The Bachelor's thesis "Sunningdale Agreement: Consociationalism as a solution of conflict in Northern Ireland and its failure" examines the possibilities of using consociational model to solve the conflict in Northern Ireland in the 1970s. British government tried to solve long- lasting conflict among catholics and protestants by imposing the power-sharing government. The thesis examines how the conditions of consociational model defined by Arend Lijphart were fulfilled in Northern Ireland and if there was a opportunity to solve the conflict with the model. Moreover, the thesis analyses to what extent the failure was caused by consociational model itself. The result is that conditions for consociational model are not favorable in Northern Ireland, but this does not necessarily mean failure. More important was the lack of the key element of consociationalism, which is the belief that the system should be preserved shared among the elites.

Ročejdlová, Markéta ; Kasáková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (referee)
The Abstract The work "The Impact of the Good Friday Agreement on the Protestant Community" deals with the Protestant community in Northern Ireland in the period between signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 and the St. Andrews agreement in 2007. The object of analysis is the change in perception of the Catholics, the Great Britain, Republic of Ireland and the Protestant community by itself in the relation to the implementation of the Good Friday Agreement, respectively its three principles (right to self-determination, power-sharing and parity of self esteems). The work is divided in several chapters. The work contains chapter describing the Good Friday Agreement and the profile of Protestants in 1998 and further chapters for each of the principles and their impact on the Protestant community. Thanks to more or less successful implementation of the Good Friday Agreement and the lost of the hegemonic position there was a significant shift in the identity of the Protestant community. The shift was accentuated by the intertwined religion, etno-national and political identification. After the 1998 there was a weakening of the ties with Great Britain and the British identity at the advantage of the identity Northern Irish. During the examined period the shift from the tradition division of the Northern...
Solving of Conflicts in the International Relations. The Case Study of the Conflict in the Northern Ireland
Novotná, Tereza ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Karásek, Tomáš (referee)
Diploma thesis Conflict Resolution in International Relations: The Case Study of Northern Ireland Conflict examines development of the conflict and peace process between the years of 1980 and 2007. A complex concept of conflict analysis by Peter Wallensteen is applied to the case of Northern Ireland. Using the method of process tracing allows for a detailed understanding of the transformation of conflict dynamics from negative to positive. Such a transformation results from behavior and attitudes of individual actors who act positively and in a constructive way. The following actors were identified as the main parties to the conflict: IRA, Northern Ireland political parties - mostly the UUP, DUP, SDLP, and SF - governments of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. Development of their attitudes and interests is examined with respect to five distinct categories: involvement of independent authorities and/or third parties; ideology and understanding of the main goals; economic conditions; cultural aspects; and the matter of decommissioning. The Northern Ireland case illustrates that the change of behavior eventually led to the transformation of the conflict and its resolution. However, it also illustrates how painfully slow process it was.
Gerald MacNamara and the Northern Revival
Diaz, Michael ; Pilný, Ondřej (advisor) ; Wallace, Clare (referee)
English Abstract Nationalist movements often utilize aspects of mythology and history in their attempts to create a nationalist ideology. Through a selective emphasis and narrow interpretation of historical events, nationalist groups strive to create a national mythology. In this regard, the nationalist movements in fin de siècle Ireland are no different. This thesis attempts to show how the work of Gerald MacNamara, an Irish nationalist writing from Unionist Belfast during the periods of Revival and partition, was able to utilize the dramatic forms of parody and satire to create an oeuvre that critiqued both nationalist and unionist ideologies and nationalist movements as a whole.

Nechybová, Klára ; Vymětal, Petr (advisor) ; Bobková, Eva (referee)

On the basis of the Northern Ireland political parties the second part explains which cleavages formed the conflict. The third part gives the results of the peace process and presents reasons of its failure.

Hladíková, Lucie ; Havlová, Radka (advisor) ; Dubský, Zbyněk (referee)
Although Northern Ireland is a part of United Kingdom and so Europe, it belongs to regions which are characterized as unstable. Lately, there has been a significant improvement in implementing desired measures, however, one can still encounter street rioting stemming from the history of Northern Irish conflict. The Master thesis conducts a survey of the situation after the crucial signing of Belfast Peace Accord. It aims to evaluate the rate of success of introduced post-conflict reconstruction and holds the opinion that the progress in social sphere is especially significant, meaning cross-community relations and mutual respect. Gradually, in three chapters, the thesis unveils the theoretical concept of post-conflict reconstruction with a special attention to social sphere and culture. Moreover, it refers to the milestones of history and comes to the conclusion where it evaluates the current situation in society in disputed areas. Main idea of the thesis is to assess the hypothesis if the adopted measures do have an effect on current development and if a change in society could influence the perception of the roots of the conflict mainly in the question of interpersonal relations.
