"Just Don't Be Yourself" - Discourse of Homosexuality in Czech Protestant Churches
Boszczyk, Filip ; Javornícky Brumovská, Tereza (advisor) ; Knotková - Čapková, Blanka (referee)
While the majority of Czech society now holds relatively positive attitudes toward the homosexual minority, the same cannot be said of religious people. Czech Protestants in particular are a very heterogenous group in this area. This thesis is an excursion into the intersection of these two minorities: religious and sexual. It seeks to answer questions about the nature of the Czech Protestants' approach to the phenomenon of homosexuality, its history and the circumstances that have given it its current form. The main subject of the thesis is therefore the Protestant discourse of homosexuality, the study of which makes it possible to identify the basic ideological differences between religious attitudes of accepting or rejecting homosexuality. Understanding these theological and social assumptions helps to clarify key aspects of the contemporary culture wars in which conservative Christianity plays an important role.
Work motivation theory in socialist discourse of the '50s
Gruntová Kolingerová, Hana ; Štemberk, Jan (advisor) ; Vávra, Martin (referee)
The thesis focuses on the construction of the work motivation theory in the socialist management discourse in the 1950s' Czechoslovakia. For that purpose, two texts representing two periods (1951 and 1957) were selected and subjected to critical discourse analysis. The analysis focused on characterising the place of production, the producers and the audience as well as on characterising the construed theory and the method of its construction. Furthermore, a change in the discourse was described; the fact that certain discourse schemes were applied prior to the onset of the communist power was pointed out; and certain differences in terms of construction of work motivation theories in the liberal West were illustrated. In connection with Foucault's concepts of subjectification and disciplination, it was shown that the socialist discourse can be understood as a method of construction of the specific subjectivity of the workforce, used in a strategy of distribution of human working potential of all citizens of the State that corresponded with the application of extensive economy. Neoliberalism as an art of government : a Foucauldian analysis of neoliberalism
Kučerová, Nikola ; Franěk, Jakub (advisor) ; Ditrych, Ondřej (referee)
In this thesis I am concernced with a Foucauldian analysis of neoliberal government and application of this concept in the Petr Nečas's government. The Foucauldian analysis of power is a constant critical process that is supposed to modify according to changing terms. Foucault argues that the core of the art of government is a conflict. He doesn't understand the modern history as a history of law and peace. From the Foucauldian point of view the modern history has always been the history of conflict of two races. The winnig race determines law and rules of the whole society. It means that law and freedom are tools of governance. The basis of Foucault's concept is a relationship between power, knowledge and subject. This relationship constitutes technologies of governance. Foucault talks about three techniques - pastoral power, disciplinary power and bio-power. The bio-power is especially in the modern age. The modern art of government uses knowledge of experts (statistics, analyses, reports) for conduct of conduct. The inidividuals are not only the recepients of effects of power, but also they are distributors of power. The identity of subjects is formed by family, teachers and co- workers and they are also formed by their milieu. The consequence of this process is mentality of a modern person. The...
Contemporary Diet Culture in the light of Michel Foucault's Analyses
Muratova, Polina ; Váša, Ondřej (advisor) ; Švantner, Martin (referee)
(in English) Nowadays various formerly silenced topics have appeared under the spotlight of public's attention: specifically, mental health awareness has put forward body image concerns as being an incentive for most lethal forms of mental distress such as eating disorders. Despite body image issues are the subject of research for various academic fields, mainly psychology, this thesis attempts to study body image from a different point of view. That is in relation to contemporary diet culture; the thesis focuses on the application of Michel Foucault's theoretical concepts of disciplinary power and "care of the self" practice on the contemporary diet culture. Hence, discovery and review of diet culture controlling mechanisms that might be later internalized by individuals will be in the scope of this work, alongside with the study of diet culture discourse reinforced by influential YouTube content creators. Mainly, the thesis is focused on how dietary practices refer to disciplinary practices, conceptualized by Foucault, while, simultaneously, act as enabling for the subject, mimicking Foucauldian "care of the self" practices. Key words: Michel Foucault, diet, diet culture, care of the self, eating disorder, self- transformation.

Foucault and Violence: A Genealogy of National Belonging and Representative Power in Turkey
Maze, Jacob Alan ; Salamon, Janusz (advisor) ; Brisku, Adrian (referee) ; Taglia, Stefano (referee)
The central aim of this dissertation is to introduce tools for studying a form of political violence in Michel Foucault's genealogical methodology. This is accomplished by reformulating theories from Hannah Arendt on violence to sync with Foucault's understanding of power, knowledge and experience. Violence is shown to be a relationship where one subject is prevented from fulfilling a strategy by another, which over time accumulates into widespread power relations, or nexuses of violence, within a society. This is contrasted with power, which is when one subject attempts to control the outcome of a situation, and as such it is productive. This method of genealogy is then employed in the case of national identity (i.e., nationalism) in Turkey. Tracing its historical emergence, the late Ottoman Empire becomes the focal point. A network of allegiances, referred to as sultanic power, constituted the relationships that were exercised prior to the nineteenth century. While one pledged their loyalty and subservience to their ruler, this required their ruler to offer them security and prosperity in return. Over the Long Nineteenth Century, a new network of power relations emerged based on representation through the practices and discourses that developed. I come to outline what I term representative power....
