Myth in American Advertising after 1945
Linhart, Marek ; Procházka, Martin (advisor) ; Roraback, Erik Sherman (referee)
This thesis is designed as a comprehensive analysis of the advertising discourse within some pre-set constrains. Specifically, the main area of interest is the realm of American print advertising after 1945. Within these limits, advertising is understood as a mode of language, the chief semantic unit of which is a form of Barthesian myth, a superstructure divorced from reality that supersedes de Saussure's semiotics of the sign. The bulk of this thesis is then a diachronic analysis of the development of these myths and their role as both mirrors and catalysts of a whole range of stereotypes, value hierarchies or fixed ideas firmly embedded within American collective consciousness. The primary materials for this analysis are then various specimen of the advertisements themselves, carefully selected because of their representativeness, influence or significance within the advertising realm. The main theoretical framework rests on Marx's understanding of the commodity as a certain type of fetish, Barthes's description of the structure and social function of the myth, Baudrillard's and Debord's theories on such notions as the society of spectacle, the reign of simulacra and hyperreality, Benjamin's understanding of the uniqueness of representation and its aura and finally McLuhan's detailed accounts of...
The Bolshevik government and the Eastern Orthodox Church. The position of the church in Bolshevik Russia since the October Revolution (1917-1929)
Tajčová, Tereza ; Tumis, Stanislav (advisor) ; Vojtěchovský, Ondřej (referee)
The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to analyse the relationship between the Bolshevik regime and the Orthodox Church in the decade following the Bolshevik revolution of 1917. The first part deals with the general opinions of Karl Marx and Vladimir I. Lenin on religion. The second part focuses on application of these beliefs in Russia since the Bolshevik takeover of power until the end of the 1920s. There is an analysis of the policy of the Bolshevik rule and its fight against the church which was considered the promoter of an enemy ideology, necessary to be destroyed. The thesis includes an analysis of means by which the Bolsheviks tried to reach their goal (bans, confiscations, assassinations, expulsions, etc.). A special attention is paid to Patriarch Tikhon, other personalities of the church, atheistic education of the population and the formation of the Living Church. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Representative men: The antithesis and synthesis of Emersonian and Marxist understanding of history
Holíková, Patrícia ; Ženíšek, Jakub (advisor) ; Chalupský, Petr (referee)
This paper discusses the understanding of history in the philosophy of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Karl Marx as representatives of the idealistic and materialistic ways of this understanding. It will show that both approaches, in essence, have Hegel's dialectic as their first principle. Emerson, like Hegel, considered that the driving force of history is the World Soul (the World Reason), guiding and ensuring the development of mankind and the continuity of historical eras. Marx proposed a different, materialistic, but also dialectical interpretation of the course of history, treating society as a kind of integrity capable of self- development, explaining the change of formations in society by the fact that productive forces develop, violating the correspondence between themselves and the production relations, which implies the need to change these relations, and, behind them, others, "superstructure" relations, that is, the whole society. In frames of the research, their representations about the essence of life, the being of the individual and the social community and freedom are also considered. Emerson's concept of 'self-reliance' and Marx's concept of alienation, in particular, are discussed. The contrast and meeting points of these two philosophers' positions are analyzed. Similarities and...
