Russian-Israeli Relations after the Dissolution of the Soviet Union
Pavlíková, Klára ; Kalhousová, Irena (advisor) ; Plíštilová, Tereza (referee)
The thesis Russian-Israeli Relations after the Dissolution of the Soviet Union looks at the relations of these countries in the period from the end of 1991 to 2022 from the perspective of the neorealist balance of power theory. The main aim of the thesis is to answer the question of how the geopolitical interests of the two countries are inscribed in their diplomatic relations. At first glance, some diplomatic interactions between Moscow and Tel Aviv may give the impression of very warm relations. However, the two countries are fundamentally at odds over their interests in the Middle East. Russia's interests, as could be deduced from the balance of power theory, derive from its efforts to counterbalance the USA. Israel's interest is to survive surrounded by enemies, which it seeks to achieve through its alliance with the USA. The thesis is based on two case studies: Iran and Syria. I analyze both geopolitical interests and diplomatic relations using qualitative and quantitative research methods. In the case of geopolitical interests, I draw on official government documents, military doctrines, statements by top politicians, the formation of military-strategic alliances, energy cooperation, and Russian, Israeli, and U.S. votes at the United Nations in the cases of Iran and Syria. I analyze...
Hybrid war concept in the context of Israeli state activities
Wildová, Tereza ; Horák, Slavomír (advisor) ; Kalhousová, Irena (referee)
The bachelor's thesis focuses on Israel's involvement in the Syrian Arab Republic in the context of the concept of hybrid warfare. The text of the thesis is divided into three parts. The first part outlines the theoretical grasp of the concept of hybrid warfare, and how the concept is treated, scholarly discussion about the concept, and which tools and actors are considered relevant. The second part traces the Israeli engagement in Syria itself, in terms of the various methods employed, as well as the motives and interrelationships, and the legislative anchoring of Israeli activities. The third part attempts to answer the research question : "Why does Israel resort to the use of hybrid warfare against the Syrian Arab Republic and what tools does it use to do so?" with the following sub-questions "To what extent is this use offensive or defensive?", "What does Israel use to justify its actions in Syria in the context of international law?". Using theoretical analysis and a single case study as methods to develop the thesis, it was found that Israel resorts to its actions for several reasons, the main one being the issue of its security. Israel fears the deeper involvement of Iran and its allies and seeks to maintain its regional hegemony. Israel's actions in Syria can be seen as both offensive and...

Bronec, Jakub ; Koura, Petr (advisor) ; Brüll, Christoph (referee) ; Kalhousová, Irena (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to analyze and compare the development and changes of Jewish identity and Jewishness in post-war Jewish generations in the years 1945-1990 born or living in the Czech lands (Czech, Moravia, Silesia) and Luxembourg. The research focuses only on the territory of the Czech lands (Czech Republic) and Luxembourg; it does not include the current Slovak territory. The author's intention is to compare the development of Judaism and Jewish identity between members of the second and third post-war Jewish generations who were influenced by two different political systems - the Western Liberal Democracy and the Eastern Communist regime. The work aims to find similarities and differences in predetermined aspects that directly and indirectly have influenced the life of both Jewish communities in Luxembourg and the current Czech Republic. Individual aspects and factors were determined as follows: the path to Judaism and its formation in two different political regimes; attitude towards the state of Israel; antisemitism. The work seeks to find different comparative parameters for intergenerational analysis of different attitudes towards Israel, influence of antisemitism on post-war Jewish generations and understand the processes involved in the formation and transmission of Czech and...

The theme of my thesis are deeds of the prophet Elijah happening during his life as well as in the afterlife. My standpoint uses both Jewish and Christian paradigms, seeks connections between them and links one to the other. The books of kings are a major source and I focused on comprehensive understanding of their texts. I have translated used biblical texts and biblical interpretations into Czech where possible for easier understanding. Some more complex themes have also their original texts or sources I worked with embedded.

Mentality of Jewish settlers in West Bank: An anthropological study
Žebrová, Jiřina ; Biernot, David (advisor) ; Damohorská, Pavla (referee)
7 Abstract This Master's thesis explores the depth of Jewish settler mentality from the radically religious to the secularly pragmatic. The aim is to evaluate their influence on the politics of Israeli governments and Israeli society as a national unit throughout history, and furthermore to point out the phenomenological foundations that the settler movement exhibits from the point of view of national identity, territorial identity and that of religious tradition. This work has been prepared through the careful study of diverse literature which is devoted to the Jewish settlers themselves, their role in the creation of a new identity in the young state of Israel, the general concept of national feelings found in territorial and collective memory, and the correct historical classification of settlement aktivity including its comparison with similar communities outside of Israel. Through my research I have discovered that not only do the settlers living beyond the Green Line show strong national and religious elements, but that they also tend towards more radical forms of dealing with state authorities as well as how they solve territorial dilemmas. The strong religious foundation of the settlers threatens Israel's position in peace negotiations and the state's position in the eyes of the international...

A Deterrence Strategy: The Case of Israel
Syruček, Václav ; Kalhousová, Irena (advisor) ; Hornát, Jan (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the State of Israel and its deterrence strategy by measuring the question of how the deterrence strategy of the State of Israel changed between 1967 and 2014. The theoretical part of the thesis first presents the concept of grand strategy. The following chapter presents the strategy of deterrence in more detail, possible approaches to creating deterrence, and the general goals of actors in trying to deter other state and non-state actors from their behaviour. The practical part of the work presents the development of Israel's approach to deterrence in individual historical periods, focusing on the period between years 1967 and 2014. For context, shorter chapters also cover the period between the War of Independence and Israel's security outlook after 2014. The examples show that Israeli deterrence has shifted from disproportionate retaliation to greater restraint.
From Zionism to Anti-Zionism: The Transformation of Relationship between Czechoslovakia and Israel in the Pages of Rudé právo (1947-1953)
Eder, Ivana ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Osvaldová, Barbora (referee)
The diploma thesis From Zionism to Anti-Zionism: The Transformation of Relationship between Czechoslovakia and Israel in the Pages of Rudé právo (1947-1953) deals with the period in which the relationship between Israel and Czechoslovakia had transformed. Firstly, our focus is on the material and diplomatic support that Czechoslovakia provided to the emerging State of Israel. It then discusses the events that disrupted relations between the two states and led to mutual alienation. Finally, it describes a period when the countries came into open hostility. Czechoslovakia took a very negative attitude towards Zionism. The work outlines two views of these events from 1947 to 1953. The first represents the view of historians based on facts and period documents, by contrast, the second view describes how the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia interpreted world events through its newspaper Rudé právo. At that time it was the most widely read periodical having a circulation of more than one million. Its main task was to spread propaganda, isolate citizens from "uncomfortable" information, and direct the population in the desired direction - toward the Soviet Union. All in all the output of this diploma thesis is a thorough qualitative analysis of relevant articles from Rudé právo and their subsequent...
