Media Representation of the Yellow Vests Movement on Selected Czech and British News Websites
Drtina, Matěj ; Tomalová, Eliška (advisor) ; Váška, Jan (referee)
The media image of events fundamentally influences the perception of the world. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to answer the question whether - and if so, in what way - the media image of the French Yellow Vests movement differs between the British news sites BBC and The Guardian and the Czech iDNES and Seznam Zprávy. Bimodal research - a combination of quantitative and qualitative content analysis methods - was used to answer this question. This analysis was applied to a total of 272 texts published about Yellow Vests movement on the four selected news sites between November 2018 and November 2019. Based on the analysis and interpretation of its results, it can be stated that the media image of the Yellow Vests movement provided by the BBC, The Guardian, iDNES and Seznam Zprávy is different. This finding corresponds to the fact that the media representation of an event is based on a selective process, and therefore an identical or almost identical representation of reality created by different media cannot be expected. However, in many of the analyzed aspects - such as timing of information, the occurrence of key phrases, the occurrence of key personalities and others - the difference is not significant and the results can be interpreted as evidence of the media homogenization trend.

This hypothesis comes from the apparent difference between Brussels and the Middle East regarding area and political systems which could also lead to the same relation between reporting from these two destinations. The target is then analysing the content of interviews with Czech Radio's foreign correspondents and their predecessors placed in Brussels and in the Middle East by means of qualitative research approach. These are: preparation for the position, agenda setting, characteristics comparing to other correspondents of the Czech Radio, physical and psychical demands, issues with recording, cooperation and the impact of technological development on the correspondent 's work.

The aim of the thesis The news of Czech News Agency from Latin America is to document the form of the Czech News Agency's text news from Latin America, to reveal whether the agency fulfills its obligation to inform about events abroad according to Act No. 517/92 Coll., and also to expand the very limited number of studies related to this topic. This work deals with news agencies and takes into consideration the CTK as a public institution and outlines the characteristics of Latin America and its relations with our country. Using quantitative content analysis, I find out how much space CTK spends on the countries of the North, Central and South America, which countries are re-informing and which countries virtually ignore in its news. I examine what priority messages are usually assigned and which areas of public life are concerned. Last but not least, I compare the monitored reality from the first half of 2016 to the first half of 2006 to reveal how much informing about Latin America has changed over the course of a decade. At thesis I provide a detailed analysis of Czech News Agency's production from Latin American countries, which no one has ever dealt with in the Czech environment so far, and present the results of my analysis in the tables and charts.
